I have a problem with gratuitous use of the f-Bomb. So I was very disappointed to have been reading along and enjoying the book and running into the f-bomb before even getting through the first chapter. The multiple star reviews must be from people that use or don't mind vulgar language. I wasn't expecting to find it in a book about joy. It's one thing to encounter this word in a fiction book where it fits the character, but it's entirely inappropriate, in my opinion, in a non-fiction book about joy. Wish you could get a refund for books that contain vulgarity when it's unexpected/unnecessary for that genre.

Lovely book; somewhat inspiring. For a book about the visual world...where are the images? It would have made the book truly special to show the bank in Japan as well as many other things and scenes described. The line drawings should have been left out and replaced with colorful images.

Read this book with your iPad in your lap. Looking up the places and objects described in the book added much to the experience. The surprise hiding under the dust jacket is still making me smile. Fascinating information that fired my imagination as I read. Joy is everywhere and it is easy to bring into our environments. I realize how much I’ve let other people’s ideas of good taste dictate what I wear and how my home looks. I’m full of new ideas and will use the toolkit provided to help me bring my own brand of joy to my life.

A not too technical read with a lot of anecdotes but interesting and gives one a green light to like whatever they want and express themselves, to be happy. Highly recommended. Since reading it I've worn far more pink, purple and colors of every kind, and acquired monster feet slippers and winter socks with woolly sheep ears that made me smile. I've stopped rushing and slowed down to listen to some nature. Admired a sunset or two and at least partially it is because of this book.

Ingrid Fetell Lee devoted years to in-depth study of one transformative idea: human beings are capable of designing our own happiness from the outside in. We are often taught that inner joy has little-to-no relationship to our external environment. In JOYFUL, she clearly and confidently demonstrates the wrongheadedness of this view of our basic nature and potential for experiencing more happiness more of the time.JOYFUL shows us that our world's natural harmony provides the most renewable and accessible sources of joy. We’ve evolved to gravitate toward certain universal aesthetics – shapes, colors, and other sensory effects. These hardwired characteristics and environmental responses have kept us alive as a species for thousands of years. They also explain why we stop to watch a beautiful sunset, flock to see cherry blossoms bloom in spring, and can’t help but smile when new snow blankets the ground. By understanding the components of blissful moments, we can transform joy from an intangible, fleeting feeling, to something that stays with us throughout the day.Thank you, Ingrid Fetell Lee, for writing a wise and fascinating book that has changed my life!!

This is a joyful book to read. She is not only a good researcher, she's a good writer. I've nearly finished it once. At first I rushed through. Now I'm savoring it more. I will read it again to mark up all the sites she mentions, all the artists I want to follow. Would love to go on a tour with her.

Last year was a rough year, and 2019 isn't looking too great either. I begin this book with a healthy level of skepticism— wondering whether there truly was an "aesthetic" to joy. Page by page, however, Ingrid won me over. Tying gut feelings to scientific studies and observations, she made the case for why certain things bring us joy, while others do not. I was delighted that she even includes worksheets on how to start discovering your own joy and incorporating more of those things into your life. Since reading the book, I'm finding myself adding more pops of color to my wardrobe, venturing further away from the all-black uniform usually assumed by designers and New Yorkers (and goths). It's even made its way into my manicures, which now receive more compliments than ever. Needless to say, 2019 is looking a bit brighter.

As a designer I am always interested not only WHAT works by WHY things work, aesthetically speaking. It's easy to know what you like, easy enough to find out what people are drawn to, but understanding conceptually why we like what we do and are drawn to what we are drawn is often mostly elusive knowledge - until now. From smaller nuggets - that the word "gaudy" has Latin roots from which the word joy was also derived, to broader and more impactful observations - that our physical environment can also deeply effect our physical health and mental well being - Ingrid lays out a perfect blueprint for understanding, appreciating and creating joy.She even examines the art (and explores the validity of) of Feng Shui, the larger ideas of both harmony and abundance and how even simple things like indoor plants can channel the direction and mood of our daily activities. These points seem obvious once stated, but is not something we often take the time to think about. Her examination of joy is far reaching - from landscape architecture to one of my favorite interior designers Dorthy Draper - to the more obscure and magical Icelandic elves, with each chapter coming at her topic from a new angle. Perhaps a side effect of her book, as I type this I am sitting in between flights in a drab, greyscale, commercial/industrial airport wishing someone would come in with a paintbrush and and splash the walls and floors with some pinks, blues and yellows. It would make waiting for my next flight a lot less tedious, even joyful!

From School Library Journal

PreS-Gr 2—In this clever picture-book retelling of "Goldilocks and the Three Bears," Chinese New Year starts with Goldy Luck's mother asking her to bring turnip cakes to their panda neighbors, the Chans. Goldy heads next door, promptly spilling her plate of turnip cakes as she walks in the front door; from there, things unfold as might be expected. She eats up Little Chan's rice porridge, breaks his rocking chair, and falls asleep on his futon. Goldy Luck's conscience gets the better of her, though, and she learns some valuable lessons about friendship and being a good neighbor. Zong's acrylic cartoon-style illustrations benefit from well-balanced one- and two-page spreads. Red, a color strongly associated with Chinese New Year and symbolic of good luck, is used as a motif throughout; fittingly, Goldy Luck wears a red sweater and tights. Employing complementary and analogous colors provides balance, and the illustrations are appealing and humorous without being over-the-top. This is a fun retelling of a familiar tale with Chinese-American characters and cultural references, using the celebration of Chinese/Lunar New Year as the backdrop for a story that can be enjoyed year round. An author's note about Chinese New Year and a recipe for turnip cakes are appended.—Ted McCoy, Springfield City Library, MA

This is a fun retelling of a familiar tale with Chinese-American characters and cultural references, using the celebration of Chinese/Lunar New Year as the backdrop for a story that can be enjoyed year round. An author’s note about Chinese New Year and a recipe for turnip cakes are appended.--School Library Journal April 2014Set in a contemporary city, Natasha Yim and Grace Zong’s Goldy Luck and the Three Pandas (Charlesbridge, 2014) stars a protagonist with shining coal-black locks, a bad habit of breaking things, and—despite her name—a lack of good luck. On Chinese New Year, her mother wakes Goldy up before breakfast and sends her to their neighbors’ apartment with a plate of turnip cakes and Kung Hei Fat Choi wishes. After knocking on the door, Goldy gently pushes it open, trips, and spills the goodies all over the floor. As she searches for the broom, she spots three steaming bowls of congee and, tummy rumbling, decides to taste the rice porridge. So it goes, until the Chan family—three pandas, of course—returns to discover a big mess and Goldy sound asleep on Little Chan’s futon. Back at home, she thinks about her actions, and, truly embracing the spirit of this start-the-year-fresh holiday, decides to set things right. Themes of friendship and forgiveness resound, as Goldy makes amends and is invited to bake a new batch of turnip cakes (a recipe and information about Chinese New Year customs are appended). The text playfully incorporates festive food-related similes (Goldy feels “like stuffing in a pork bun” in Mrs. Chan’s upholstered armchair), and both narrative and acrylic artwork abound with details of Chinese-American culture.--School Library Journal, March 23, 2015

Great way to work Lunar new year into story-time, and since we bought this just before Lunar, it was also introduced just in time for a trip to the New Year parade. Book has been a hit with my kid after the parade too, since now she wants to flip to the "dragon" page over and over.My only criticism of the book itself is that I wish the authors had incorporated the New Year's tradition of other Asian cultures, or at least used the "lunar" new year naming convention instead of "Chinese" new year, since Koreans, Vietnamese, as well as other Asian groups celebrate it as a big holiday also.

Very cute story. Nice illustration. Wish it said Xin Nian Kuai Le or at least Gong Xi Fa Cai instead of Kung Hei Fat Choi. Or at least wish this was noted about the book as I wouldn't have purchased it had I known. My Chinese friends/family don't speak Cantonese so reading this to my kids isn't helping introduce them to an appropriate lunar new year greeting. I'll probably use my label maker to cover and replace this phrase.

The book is darling, but just like the other reviews, my book was missing words in two separate places! That shouldn't have been missed by the publisher. I'll just write in the missing words, but really?

But some words are missing in two pages.

I ordered this book to use in our Fairy Tale unit. I felt my students in Korea would love this version of Goldilocks, as they could connect to the cultural references. I was right! The setting, illustrations, humor, and character development added interest and content for discussion. Thank you for shipping this quality book in a timely manner.

Good multicultural example for Goldilocks. Explains Chinese New Year customs ascwell

My 2 year old loves this book! He wants me to read it to him every single night. It's a great twist on Goldy Locks and the 3 Bears. I highly recommend it!

Such a wonderful take on the old story with details perfect for sharing an Asian experience. Really fun.

Sister Delio is a part of what some call "Vatican III," the plethora of new thinkers arising within the Catholic Church, beginning with Thomas Merton, Henri Nouwen, and continued by Richard Rohr, Margaret Farley, Daniel Berrigan, and Ilia Delio. To borrow from the ideas of Father Rohr, I would classify this vein of thinking as postliberal, postconservative, postmodern, and non-dualistic. These innovative and forward-thinking religious are bringing the Catholic Church (finally) into its own namesake, which is to say, truly universal.I cannot express enough praise for this work. Though only 200 pages long, it has taken me over a month to finish because it is just so deep and meaningful, and many of her ideas challenge millennia-old habits of the Church Universal. This work is timely and absolutely necessary, and it is because of people like Delio that I keep returning to Mass every weekend. I, for one, welcome Vatican III.My only criticism of this work are the numerous typographical errors within, which is not necessarily any fault of Delio's, and so I opted not to deduct any stars from it. I would give her copy editor(s) maybe two or three stars for their subpar editing work. I view typographical errors as a sign of great disrespect to both the author and the reader, as if the work itself were not valuable enough to expend the necessary energy to make sure the text is error free. Someone at Orbis Books definitely dropped the ball.Still, it didn't detract from the incredible depth of her thinking or the importance of this work for not only the Catholic Church, but the wider Christian community as a whole, and I wholeheartedly endorse anything Delio has written.

I found that there were many things in the book I didn't understand and even some things I would question - knowing that this is a seminal work inviting more reflection and development Having said this I found the vision of this book breathtaking and powerful. I was deeply challenged to see my human - Christian life and mission in a new way. The book succeeded in opening and energizing my mind and heart to a renewed excitement about the relationship between God and religion and science and evolution. It opened up something very profound in me. I say this as a teacher, and a Catholic priest with a doctorate in Theology

Llia Delio's The Unbearable Wholeness of Being" is the major work which beautifully, comprehensively outlines a Christian non-dualistic theology of love. This book contrasts that theological understanding with philosophical Enlinghtenment dualis which really undergirds the reason why the human race is facing extinction through out abuse of the gifts of creation. All this related to culture, politics power and what the reality of creation is in reality--a Whole. Our web of being. The evolution of being. I really studied and contemplated the first book--this book shows us what we are up against. I found "the Unbearable Wholeness of Being" essential to face the consequences Llia delio outlines for dualistic thinking in this book. Highly recommend both.

To answer my own question, the author would probably say that institutionalized religions like the Catholic Church would be severely constrained to lift herself up to spread the Gospel of catholicity, which Delio summarized as the core of the Teilhard's theology. Ironically, the visionary Teilhard de Chardin was a priest true to his belief, so it is perhaps a matter of time, an evolutionary process, before all religions converge into world religions, and all people become people of God. As one who has a scientific background, like Teilhard the paleontologist, Delio did a good job describing Eienstein's General Theory of Relativity from the post-modern faith perspective.

Ms Delio has absorbed the thinking of people like Pierre Teihard de Chardin and, from the perspective of science, leads the reader into the mystery of the world, how the energy of creation moves us to open ourselves to the power of love that unites in contrast to the power of negativity that divides. A thoroughly challenging and spiritually uplifting book.

I am not particularly religious, although I DO believe in the spirit. Either way, it is clear that religion deserves a place at the table when we discuss new and innovative ideas about the cosmos, physics, quantum mechanics, and relativity. Ilia Delio does an excellent job of putting it all together from the religious perspective. Some of what she asks of the Roman Catholic Church - and Christianity in general - is being done by the Bahai faith. Ilia is a strong believer in evolution and in the co-evolution of the material and spiritual in the cosmos. This is a great read for anyone seeking to understand the role of consciousness (spirit) in our cosmos. She is a theologian with a great vocabulary, so keep a dictionary close by.

I was blown away by this book! I want to read it over and over and over! I was moved by the new take on the word catholic. As a catholic, I new the word meant universsal... but I always thought that meant that the Roman Catholic Church was the one true church for everyone... how naive! Now I know it refers to the spirit of catholicity in relation to universal wholeness and the work of making all things wholly! Loved it!

This is a very helpful synthesis of current thought re. Cosmology and Catholicity...catholicity framed as wholistic.. An easier read than her other incredibly wonderful books.
