Simply reading the play is a wonderful way to recall the Christmas story, with all of the Biblical threads woven together into a cohesive whole. I can't wait to experience it on Christmas Eve as our small congregation does the reader's theater version. Simple, clear, powerful, and written by someone who both knows the story and knows the church, how quirky our resources often are for dramatic presentations. There are lots of ways to adapt it for different situations. Gary let me read a copy in advance, and I'm so glad he did!

Good for adults or church play. I like the correlation with biblical text. It doesn't require scenery or many props.

great

I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author on the condition that I post an honest review. The four words above are the ones that come most readily to mind after having read this wonderful work. On a first read, one might well think, "What's the big deal? Everything's just copied from Scripture." This is true -- and yet, the gentle, faithful and nuanced way that Hansen has assembled it truly brings the Christmas Story to life in a unique fashion.Elegant -- because the entire script is from the Bible (which is much more concise than most of what's written today), but also because of the thoughtful ways Hansen assigns readings to various characters. Simplicity also comes to mind here. This production clearly highlights the Story (as opposed to stagecraft or acting, e.g.), and the author adds a minimum of direction that, because of its infrequent use, is all the more effective in communicating to the audience.Powerful -- As I read the play and imagine various people reading the parts aloud, the power of this re-telling quickly becomes clear. The entire story is read, but not just by one person. Nor is it shared by a succession of people walking up to the lectern, reading a passage, then leaving to let the next person have their turn. The use of people on a stage to give voice to the actual people in the Story, with minimalist staging, provides a more organic setting for the telling of the Story, one that allows the voices and the narrative to come forth in a uniquely powerful and faithful way. Furthermore, the Christmas Story IS a powerful story in and of itself; where we so often fail is in trying to modify it in some way as to add something that we think is missing, or needs to be emphasized. This production humbly (and refreshingly) refrains from this tack. As a consequence, the audience gets the "original, unedited, unadulterated" story all by itself -- and this allows the Story to fully express its authentic power.Accessible -- Both practically and intellectually. Again, because Hansen has added nothing, one can assume that most people in the audience have already heard most, if not all, of these words before. Neither the audience nor the readers are asked to examine or explore a (possibly disorienting) new "twist" or interpretation. The familiarity and simplicity of the narrative allow the audience to enter into the story with a minimum of preparation. Even for those who have never heard the story, the unadorned biblical narrative is quite simple and free of the distracting "fluff" that is added to so much of what we read and hear today. Practically, this production does not ask from the readers the kinds of theatrical talent that most stage productions do. Any church or faith group, no matter how small, could produce this play, and with far less rehearsal time and stage production that other dramatizations may require.Biblical -- This is probably the production's greatest strength. It uses the English Standard Version (ESV) translation, a relatively new translation, yet one that seeks to be more faithful to the original Greek and Hebrew than many other contemporary translations that attempt to make the scripture more "relevant" or "understandable." I personally think this translation has the least potential for raising concerns (or eyebrows) among any congregation, regardless of their theological bent. And as I wrote above, Hansen has added nothing in the way of his own words or explanations, but rather allows the scripture to stand on its own.In sum, this is a faithful telling of the Christmas Story that allows the powerful Biblical witness to stand on its own. It provides a minimum of voicing and stage direction that, although spare (or perhaps because it is spare), lifts the story out from the lips of a solitary reader or narrator and allows both the readers and the audience to see and hear this event in a way that is fresh, yet never novel. Hansen is to be commended for his gentle, respectful, nuanced and masterful stewardship of this precious and life-giving Story.

This is a deceptively simple and beautiful Christmas play. I received a free copy in return for writing an honest review, but I will tell you that if I hadn't liked it, I would have kept the review to myself. I wish I had received the copy in time to produce the play in 2015. As it is, we still may try to pull it off, not as a Sunday school production, but as our Christmas Eve worship service. Gary Neal Hansen has a way of thinking and writing (you will see this in his other books) that allows for a deep examination or very moving interpretation, using words that literally anyone who speaks English can comprehend. The staging of the play is very simple, and the costuming could be anything from very lavish to non-existent.I invite you to take a look at this very scriptural play and see if it would not be maybe the most interesting Christmas play that your church has seen in a long while.

Christmas Play is an incredibly refreshing aid for the Christmas season. It is simple, using essentially only the word of scripture, but smartly presented in a "readers' theater" format that allows for these words from scripture that we know all so well to take on a new and fresh vibrancy. The pacing and the staging presented are both powerful and lively, but simple enough that nearly any church could put this production on with relative ease. The format is also flexible, in that it could be done simply with a handful of readers seated in chairs, or presented with a full case of children and youth, along with adults. I could easily see a youth group putting on this production on their own, while at the same time picturing participants of all ages taking part in it.It seems that most pageants and nativity plays are either musical concerts with connecting scenes in between the songs, or they are cutesy productions for kids which simply try to fawn over children in costumes.Christmas Play takes the text and the story simply, but also does so in a thoughtful and caring way. I cannot wait to be able to put on a production of this play in my congregation, and I could not recommend this play more highly! Merry Christmas![I was given an advance copy of the play to review, but this in no way influenced my review].

Biblically faithful and harmoniously arranged in a coherent, logical sequence, this simple adaptation of nativity and incarnation texts from three Gospels (Matthew, Luke, and John) assigns the words of Scripture in a fresh way to various voices and characters. Thus, e.g., we have Herod growling that the darkness not has been able to overcome the light. Wonderful! With this creative approach, Hansen invites congregations to read and hear anew the canonical account of Christ's first advent in a way that will strengthen faith, inspire worship, and provoke delight. Thank you for doing this, Gary. Good for you! And good for the church that performs Christmas Play!

I had the distinct pleasure of performing this play earlier this year and played the role of Herod. The play is not your standard Christmas play and those differences underscore its importance and beauty. Topics and situations illustrated throughout this play cover the entire Christmas story and follows the scripture as closely as I have ever seen. Great work Dr. Hansen.

Experience counts in a game with so many variables, and authors: Carol Stack and Ruth Vedvik have 70 years combined experience in the college admissions and financial aid fields. They've written a book that helps both parents and students to understand both the pieces and the totality of college admission and paying for it once you get in.The book is 'new' in the sense that unlike some other handbooks the authors encourage college bound students and their parents to focus their college search on schools that 'will fund you' to go to their school. Even better, they show you how to do that!In planning for filling out the FAFSA (for potential federal financial aid and low interest loans) and the CSS (a much longer, detailed form required by some private colleges to assist them in dispersing their funds), I was looking for a book to give me a baseline understanding of the process and provide honest advice regarding the process. Upon opening this book I was thrilled to find it was exactly what I'd hoped it would be - very helpful! The book covers several topics related to admission and paying for college, but obviously (from the title...) it's mainly about paying for college and the process of how to get financial aid. The authors talk about the myths related to applying for aid, terminology related to forms, how much a family can expect to be responsible for (EFC - Estimated Family Contribution), merit awards, picking a college based upon cost, debt after college, comparing colleges, ratings and rankings of colleges, and having a plan 'b' when your first choice doesn't work out.The book isn't on the most titillating of subjects, but it's fun to read. The authors write with a friendly tone, using humor when possible to bring home valuable points. The information is presented clearly, without a lot of excess information to confuse the reader, but none of it feels condescending. The chapters of the book are not too long or dry, and you can easily bounce between chapters if needed. It's simple, without being simplistic. I like it a lot, and see that it could be helpful to a lot of people. All of the topics in this book are still relevant today, despite having been published in 2011. Reading it is an eye-opener, but it's also empowering. It gives both students and parents a look at the realities of this expensive journey into higher education and it also gives you hope that you'll find the right fit financially if you are smart about your search.I'll be filling out the FAFSA and CSS forms during the first part of January and my daughter is currently applying to colleges. I'm happy I found this book as reading it has reaffirmed what I thought I knew about the subjects covered in the book, and taught me some new things about the process that only insiders with experience would know. I feel that my family is now better prepared for the challenges ahead and would recommend this book to any student seeking admission to college and any parent who is lost or overwhelmed by the process.

We have a junior in high school and the college planning process is in full force. Let's face it, college is outrageously expensive and it's kind of a scary financial proposition. This book has been very helpful in removing the stress involved in finding the right college, and then being able to pay for it. The authors really gave my family some great insights into the fact that education is a business, and a big business. It really helps to take away the emotional component as well as the fear around the entire process.I highly recommend this book to anyone who is starting the college process, especially juniors. There are things you can do now to better prepare yourself and to not be at the whim of all the marketing BS that colleges are putting out there. The authors also put some humor into it which makes the book much easier to read. The book is well arranged into sections so that a busy or not-so-interested parent can read 2 summary chapters and get something out of of it. This book will shift the entire way you think about college selection. In my opinion, this book is entirely worth the price and I think it will end up saving us thousands if not tens of thousands in the future.

The way this book works (and boy did it work well) is that parents AND the student are to read the book and form a team. The adults explore their resources and the student explores college costs. Then the team determines what "affordable" means to the family and also what a "reasonable" amount to borrow for college costs BEFORE the student gets their heart broken when their top 6 college choices are out of financial reach unless a 6 figure loan is taken out. The authors believe that debt over $20,000 total for undergraduates is neither reasonable nor necessary for a student to find a good school that is an excellent fit.The book is well organized, separated into logical chapters, and neither patronizes nor overwhelms the reader, be they parent or student. It's matter of fact, but not dry; all 3 of us wound up chuckling occasionally. My spouse, student and I read the book and teamed up to follow the advice suggested by the authors. My student was confident in their research,as were we. Rather than narrow the search, my student found an overwhelming number of colleges that were affordable for our middle class family. They were able to narrow their list to a dozen viable choices. After several phone interviews and college visits, our student asked to apply to 8 schools. They were accepted by 6 colleges, all within our means. Three of them offered substantial financial aid packages. Our student is happily settled in their first year of one of the 3 colleges. My STUDENT suggested they take a work-study job to reduce the amount of their student loan. They got that wisdom from the book!I gave a copy to my student's college counselor; he read it, loved it as well and is recommending it to parents. I strongly recommend it to you.

I worked in the student loan industry and this book contains a long overdue message. Do not overpay for college. Colleges are BUSINESSES. Unless money is no object, the days of education for the sake of education are over. Remember, no admission officer in history has ever said "this college is too expensive given your means" or "did you know you can get the same thing from Better Value University for half the price?" This book contains tons of well written advice from people who know what they're talking about. Listen to them.
