This book is EXTRAORDINARY. Every page I read gives HOPE to all of us that the last years of our lives can be beautiful years of thought, of action, of reflection. I have never had the good fortune to hear Dr. Cohen speak, but his voice comes through the pages of this book loud and clear. Just listen to a selection of sentences on just one randomly selected page:· A life without memory is a ghost life at best· Our brains have no known limits for memory storage. In other words just because you're old, that doesn't mean you've "used up" your brain's memory capacity.· You need to understand a bit about the brain's mind-boggling circuitry.· The limits on memory are logistical, not fundamental. We are limited only by the time we have in life for learning - our brains could contain many lifetimes of information. This is incredible information this man is giving up. All of the above appeared on page 106. I found the entire book to be chock full of optimistic statements and beliefs predicated on Gene Cohen's lifetime of scientific learning.I don't know about you, but when I pick up a book, the cover catches my eye, and then the feel. I want see how the pages feel as I turn them. What font does the author used, and how big is that font? Is the author long-winded in his statements? Does the book have an extra hundred, or two hundred pages of filler material, or does the author get to the point? Am I going to take one or two fabulous thoughts out of this book, or is it full of gems on every page, just waiting for me to get at them?I couldn't put this book down, that's how interesting I found it. Chapter 7 is about "Reinventing Retirement". This chapter will transform your thinking as to what retirement can be all about. It can be the best years of our lives. I use to think that when people get old, they get cranky, and nasty. It wasn't until about five years ago; I suddenly realized that hey, these people were like this when they were young. They didn't need to get old, to get nasty. The book is full of interesting anecdotes about different people at different stages of their lives. This man should write a book interviewing a hundred different fascinating people who are in their 80's or 90's. I haven't found anything out there like this, and Cohen is the perfect gentleman to write such a book. One of the gifts that old age can bring is the ability to selectively re-live different times in your life if you have remarkable recall of what took place. I talked to a man once who was in his 90's, and had been an editor of a major magazine in his earlier years. His mind was extraordinarily alive, and vibrant, with incredible recall. I asked him what was the best thing about being older. He said it was the ability to constantly entertain himself by thinking about events in the past that happened 40, 50, 60, even 70 years ago. As I get older, I am 55 now, I understand what he meant.I met a man who was among the handful of the most powerful Cardinals in the Vatican. This individual was in his late 80's. He told me that he had participated in thousands upon thousands of situations involving the last rites of people who were about to die. I asked him if there was anything in common among the people involved? What did they think about in the last minutes to hours, of their respective lives? He said that none of them expressed guilt over things they had done. Every one of them talked about the things they had not done, but wished they had done. A man might have wanted to go salmon fishing in a river in Montana, or spent more time with his daughter in New Orleans. Not one of them ever said, "You know, I should have worked harder."This book by Gene Cohen gives new meaning to old age, and what it can become for each of us who are willing to grasp the possibilities and ACT on them. Order it today, read it from cover to cover. Give it to your parents if they are still alive, or a loved one. Get out of that rut, and take on new challenges. Every day each of us is an author, and we are busy writing our own scripts - OUR LIVES. Make it so that you can look back some day, and say - NO REGRETS AND MEAN IT.Richard Stoyeck

This was required reading for a graduate class I was enrolled in last semester. It surprised me that once I got into the book, I truly enjoyed it. It gave some really great, eye-opening perspectives on aging, what the elderly expect versus what they experience, & how things are changing for that age segment every day. I would definitely recommend it to anyone interested in gerontology & the study of aging.

Highly recommended for anyone starting to contemplate retirement, as wells those already retired. I enjoyed the summary descriptions of four psychological stages we all traverse over the course of our lives. The book contains many interesting suggested activities and resources for staying socially engaged and connected with your true inner self as you age in retirement.

If you're worried about what your mind is doing as you age, this book is for you.

The lack of knowledge and misconceptions about the aging brain are enormous. Cohen documents the performance of the mature mind and serves as an inspiration to all of us. Regardless of your age read this book!

Fab!!!!!!

Even though I was raised around people who talked about the pains and ill health that accompanied aging, I never quite believed that this was what we were fated to look forward to.Still, it came as a wonderful revelation that I was not alone in my belief, and that there was strong evidence that aging as a time of decay was little more than a myth. This book not only provided compelling evidence that aging can be a rewarding period of life, but also provided a new set of expectations about what rewards will accompany the aging process. It was just the motivation I required to deal with what few health challenges I now have, so that I can enter the next phases of my life physically stronger and better able to reap its rewards!

Cohen offeres a compelling accounting of the capacity of the mind and its impact on older adults. This amounts to a refreshing revision of the prevailing understanding of what it means to age. Old dogs, new tricks? Bring it on!

I just finished this 6th edition book. Did about 50% of the coding of the book. I did started reading the 4th edition while waiting for Amazon to ship this book and finished it. 4th is the last book covered objective-C. I would presume that the 6th edition would be similar to the 4th edition with just a different language. But gladly I'm wrong! This 6th edition actually has very little almost to nothing resemble from 4th edition. Maybe it has less than 20% overlaps which is so surprising comparing to college textbooks where 95% is exactly same for few edition differences. 6th is thiner than 4th book but covers more material. It's a faster pace. Every little time was spend on swift. Maybe that material is yanked out for the swift book that they publish. This is great! I got a better understanding and practice with auto layout features from this sixth edition and better understanding of different design patterns. Everyone says that beginners just need to jump on SWIFT, but you'll need a little of objective-C to understand few weird residue stuff. So I think getting both 4th and 6th books would be a great choice if you're a beginner.Few concerns for new comers: 1) Xcode8.x is terribly slow. Swift feature is still evolving so many features in Xcode that works for Objective C will not work for swift. 2) because xcode8 is slow, you'll need a new powerful machine and yet still be slow. your learning experience will be painful. To speed up things. do this: sudo /usr/libexec/xpccachectl. It also enables your command+/ commenting. 3) There are a number of design patterns in 6th edition that covered very quickly. If you already familiar with GOF or at least head first design patterns, then you'll be fine.I finished 4th edition and its coding to address the slowness of xcode8. You can use a Macpro1,1 with xcode5 or xcode7.2 to do all the programming problems perfectly fine. You'd need a macpro4,1 or 5,1 to run xcode8.2 which are much cheaper than anything new you can buy (get on CL for few hundreds + eBay CPU+memory)I love Big Nerd Ranch!! I got my hand on a 2nd ed. for Android. Tried first chapter and saw many inconsistency between the book and the current android studio. So just ordered a 3rd ed of android programming. I'm so excited waiting for it.

Best programming book I've ever learned from. I've purchased a few books in the past for learning Java, but none were written as fluently and as effectively as this one.I'm at chapter 18 right now and I can attest to the helpfulness of the challenges. The challenges at the end of most chapters help you learn how to explore different parts of Swift and how to debug your programs. This is a super valuable skill and I 100% recommend you do ALL of the challenges. Some challenges took me 5 minutes and some of them took me 3 days. However, now that I'm almost done with the book, I've learned a lot of skills that have made the rest of these challenges a piece of cake. Completing the challenges is ESSENTIAL to fully utilizing the power of this book. However, this book is not intended for a brand new programmer. My previous knowledge of Java has helped my progress through this book tremendously. I also took an online course for learning the basics of the Swift programming language and without that, I would be incredibly lost. If you don't already know the basics of the Swift programing language, I recommend you find a tutorial online before purchasing this book.I definitely recommend this book to any programmer trying to learn Swift.

I worked about 90% of the examples in this book, including all the challenge assignments. Most of them worked perfectly and helped me graduate from Objective-C to swift. I would definitely recommend it.But...this book is not for beginning programmers. Nor is it for brand-new swift programmers. If you don't have at least some understanding of ?,! and closures, this book will leave you confused.Good: they stress design from the start. Despite what other reviewers have indicated, they made some effort to distinguish between data sources and delegates, and did not just throw everything into the view controllers.Bad: the web services example is broken. The return from the Flickr ReST call wasn't correct JSON and required some string manipulation to strip off extra characters. I don't know whether they simply didn't test their examples, or whether Flickr changed their API (or some other explanation) but it isn't professional to publish a book like this with errors, especially since the last several chapters depend on getting the web service working. However, despite this issue, I found the book helpful and useful and would strongly recommend it to others.

I am new to IOS Programming and Swift, although I went through a few online tutorials. I have about 1/4th of the book finished now and the learning curve is very steep. Already the beginning of the book to explain iOS Programming using the MVC model was great to understand the structure of a program and made it much easier to get into the coding and understanding iOS. I also love the challenges at the end of the book, although the authors should offer the results as well somewhere. However, this book is not for beginners in programming. I am an experienced Flash-Actionscript programmer and this helps me a lot to understand the book. So one should at least know one programming language very well and be familiar with the principles of programming including models. One of the challenges I was experiencing at this time (summer 2017) is that most online tutorials, questions-answers in forums all deal with former versions of swift. So you need to work on converting older code to the newest version, which I found also helpful in understanding the code. Also use the xcode playground a lot to work on simple code problems. Generally my opinion is that this is one of the best programming books I have so far read.

So glad that I discovered this new series thanks to a post on Facebook! I am not Métis but am of indigenous (American Indian) and European heritage, so I can relate to Echo's story. WouId also appreciate being able to journey back in time to see my ancestors' ways of life. I very much like her taste in music as '90's alternative and grunge is my favorite as well, along with traditional Native American and First Nations music. Looking forward to the next part of the series!

Great introduction for pre/teeens to the Pemmican Wars. I was completely ignorant about this piece of Native history. Can't wait until the next book comes out.

Great graphic novel!!! Highly recommend.

Can’t wait for the next instalment.

Original and well written. And the artwork is well done.

This is a beautifully done YA comic that deals with both the history of the Métis, an indigenous Canadian tribe, who's history I certainly hadn't know about before this, but also with the issue of belonging. The main character, a teenage girl named Echo, has been placed in a new school and a new foster care house. In school, she’s learning the history of the Métis, the local indigenous tribe, from which she is descended but not raised with. She feels like she doesn’t fit in with the people around her or with the people who should have been her people, but about whom she doesn’t know anything. In an experience that comes with no explanation (in this volume, at least) Echo is transported back in time, for short periods, to the era that her modern history class is talking about.

I fell in love with Echo's story from the first page. Her characterization is sensitive and authentic, and I can't wait to read more of her adventures.

The Five Dysfunctions of a Team: A Leadership Fable

Amazon.com Review

Once again using an astutely written fictional tale to unambiguously but painlessly deliver some hard truths about critical business procedures, Patrick Lencioni targets group behavior in the final entry of his trilogy of corporate fables. And like those preceding it, The Five Dysfunctions of a Team is an entertaining, quick read filled with useful information that will prove easy to digest and implement. This time, Lencioni weaves his lessons around the story of a troubled Silicon Valley firm and its unexpected choice for a new CEO: an old-school manager who had retired from a traditional manufacturing company two years earlier at age 55. Showing exactly how existing personnel failed to function as a unit, and precisely how the new boss worked to reestablish that essential conduct, the book's first part colorfully illustrates the ways that teamwork can elude even the most dedicated individuals--and be restored by an insightful leader. A second part offers details on Lencioni's "five dysfunctions" (absence of trust, fear of conflict, lack of commitment, avoidance of accountability, and inattention to results), along with a questionnaire for readers to use in evaluating their own teams and specifics to help them understand and overcome these common shortcomings. Like the author's previous books, The Five Temptations of a CEO and Obsessions of an Extraordinary Executive, this is highly recommended. --Howard Rothman

From Publishers Weekly

In keeping with the parable style, Lencioni (The Five Temptations of a CEO) begins by telling the fable of a woman who, as CEO of a struggling Silicon Valley firm, took control of a dysfunctional executive committee and helped its members succeed as a team. Story time over, Lencioni offers explicit instructions for overcoming the human behavioral tendencies that he says corrupt teams (absence of trust, fear of conflict, lack of commitment, avoidance of accountability and inattention to results). Succinct yet sympathetic, this guide will be a boon for those struggling with the inherent difficulties of leading a group. 100,000 first printing.

In The Five Dysfunctions of a Team: A Leadership Fable, business consultant Patrick Lencioni tells the fictional tale of DecisionTech, a two-year-old tech startup, which is floundering. Kathryn, whose background is not in the technology sector, gets the call to come in as CEO and set the ship aright. As she points out to her executive team, DecisionTech has "a more experienced and talented executive team than any of our competitors. We have more cash than they do. . . . We have better core technology. And we have a more powerful board of directors. Yet . . . we are behind two of our competitors in terms of both revenue and customer growth." She pins their lack of performance and market share to one thing: a lack of teamwork at the top.Lencioni uses the story to illustrate his five dysfunctions of a team: absence of trust, fear of conflict, lack of commitment, avoidance of accountability, and inattention to results. In the final thirty pages or so, he develops this model, discussing the way these dysfunctions build on each other and offering suggestions for overcoming them. This portion of the book is the real meat. The story seemed like a waste of pages, although in retrospect it provides illustrations of the dysfunctions and solutions he discusses at the end.The Five Dysfunctions of a Team is an OK read, but I think a lot of readers, especially busy executives for whom Lencioni is writing, will be impatient to get through the story part of the book. To oversimplify, it could be summarized in one short sentence: Work as a team. There's more to it than that, though. If your team is having a hard time with that concept and all that it entails (setting ego aside, taking an interest in the tasks of other team members, focusing on results rather than career advancement), then spending some time with The Five Dysfunctions of a Team might help you point them in the right direction.

Lencioni effectively delivers his leadership principles by packaging them into an engaging parable. I found myself nodding along as he revealed how his first four dysfunctions can manifest themselves. For this, he gets four stars. However, his fifth, and ultimate, principle - focusing on results - includes the “package deal” that associates individual goals with team failure. Or, put another way, he believes that an individual who is focused on her own goals will sacrifice the team for her own success. So, Lencioni says the individual must therefore sacrifice her personal goals for the team’s. By assuming this false dichotomy of sacrificing others to you or you to others, Lencioni misses a third approach that rejects sacrifice altogether: an approach that treats people as traders - voluntarily exchanging values to mutual benefit. For example, take his protagonist, Kathryn. She is hired to reform the leadership team and is well-compensated to do so. The company believes her leadership is good for the business. She accepts the position because she believes the job is good for her. She aligns her interests with the company’s. Both benefit. Neither subjugates nor sacrifices one side for the other. Yet, this stands in direct contrast to his own definition of his fifth dysfunction.Even with this (all-too-common) transgression, the rest of the book has more than enough value to overcome its shortcomings. Ultimately, I would recommend it to anyone who wants to learn more about leadership.

Lencioni shares simple truths about teams that should be more intuitively obvious to everyone. Yet, these things are very easy to grasp while being very difficult to actually practice ... without practice. This book focuses on what prevents a good team from forming and describe's what's needed. His companion book focuses on the implementation of these ideas but does not stand alone. If you only get one, get this one.The biggest problem I see is that both books are framed about C-level and top level executive teams. Very few mid-managers would have the leverage and ability to implement all of these principles at lower levels of the organization. It's definitely possible in some cases, but it would significantly more challenging. His principles are universally true, but his coaching is directed at executives.

I really enjoy this material, however, in my opinion, it's incomplete. It does an adequate job of explaining the 5 Dysfunctions, but unless you have some knowledge of many other tools and techniques, it does not offer any real methods for implementing the ideas. It's like they wrote this to introduce people to the Dysfunctions and expect them to go to the training to find out how to fix them. As a consultant and trainer, I have to supplement these concepts extensively to make them usable for clients. A good example is the first Dysfunction (Trust). While the book explains its importance and some basic ideas to increase trust, if you don't use an instrument such as the DISC, MBTI, SDI, or similar tool, you can't just improve trust. Different types of people have completely different issues in relation to overcoming trust issues.

I only paid $2.99 for this book (check out bookbub!), but I paid too much. I truly enjoy most of PG's novels, but take them with a grain of salt. I always read a reliable source (such as Alison Weir) if I really want to read what is actually known about a given monarch. PG does so well bringing facts alive, but takes liberties everywhere. Regarding this novel: it is the same material, repeated (using some of the same words and phrases), over and over and over again. Some reviewers have mentioned this, but truly, it would be laughable if it weren't so frustrating. MQS is a fascinating woman; so much more could have been done with her character. Additionally, Bess is the reason I gave this book two stars rather than one--she's intriguing. Unfortunately, the fascination ends after the 4th and 5th repetitions of the same exact thoughts and actions. Margaret George wrote 870 pages about MQS, and I found the novel compelling. PG phoned in this one.*Full disclosure: I could not go past the halfway point.*

I've recently become interested in learning about Mary, Queen of Scots; this gives an interesting take on the period of her life that seems to be the least talked about, when Mary seeks protection in England and in exchange Queen Elizabeth causes her to become restrained in an English earl's home to make her comfortable, but not technically free. Other depictions I've seen of Mary make her more likable; Gregory portrays her as quite shallow and selfish, yet still fun to read about. The switching up of narrators throughout this book makes it easy for the reader to see how Mary impacted people around her - George, her genteel imprisoner the earl who has been given the contradictory instructions by Queen Elizabeth to treat Mary with respect as a queen deserves but also monitor her to make sure she is not plotting to steal the English throne, finds Mary to be the most irresistible woman despite his undying loyalty to his wife and his queen. George's wife Bess is jealous of Mary for the bewitching effect her beauty has on men and bitter at all the money and assets housing Mary costs her, but she even admits to the reader it is impossible not to warm to Mary. My only criticism of the book is there's so much anticipation as to what will happen between Mary and her "frenemy" Elizabeth and then all of a sudden, it's several years later and there's a quick description of the circumstances of Mary's death, from Bess after she has received the news. I would have liked Mary's first person point of view leading up to her death, so I found the end to be abrupt and lackluster. But up until that point I couldn't put the book down.

I love historical fiction and I usually love Phillipa Gregory's books. But this one didn't quite do it for me. Mary Queen of Scots is an interesting character who led a fascinating life but in this book the best parts are all behind her--France and her marriage to the king, Scotland and her husband and lover. Here she is merely a pawn in everyone's power game. The book is an elaborate chess game where one queen is moved from place to place while the opposing queen tries to decide what to do with her. As well written as it is, it isn't the best of this series.

This book took me a little longer than usual to read, not because of the quality of the writing, but because this was a part of Tudor history I didn't know much about and I found myself constantly looking up the characters and places Gregory mentioned in the book.I think writing this book from 3 different first person perspectives gave an interesting view of the time period. Three different people have three very different views of the same event. I found myself constantly thrown for a loop by Mary. She never thought twice about lying and it was interesting to see how she would portray an event to others, and then how she actually thought of the same event.Bess is one of the best historical fiction characters I've read in a long time. From Gregory's book, as well as the researching I did on my own, I've come to really love her strength and determination. She was a smart business woman and used that to her advantage. She worked her way up and earned the things she had, even if it was through marriage, and worked hard to keep herself safe and secure for the future. I think more women in books should be like her.Yet again, Gregory has me thinking about the little things in history and how one simple decision can change the fate of a country, and the world. While not my favorite book (The Queen's Fool has that title), it was a great read and sheds more light onto the Tudor era of history.

For me, Gregory is hit or miss, and this was mostly a miss. The book is about Mary Queen of Scots exile and imprisonment from the throne. Written in three voices -- Mary, Shrewsbury, and his wife Bess, the latter tasked with housing her.I had just finished the 5th book in this Tudor series and Cecil was the redeeming character. Therefore it was incredibly difficult to slam on the brakes and read of a nasty, scheming Cecil ten years later.I was thoroughly disgusted with Bess, whose "I am an independent woman" shtick grated on my last nerve. Queen Mary is just delusional, and Shrewsbury loses pretty much all regard by the end, and I felt sorry for him.I was deeply disappointed by the ending. Anyone with history behind them knows the Scots queen was beheaded, yet for some inexplicable reason, Gregory chose to cover the entire POINT of the book in a dream sequence of Shrewsbury and the loathsome gloating of Bess. After committing myself to a long, drawn out account of the Queen avoiding The Tower, why didn't the author at the minimum give Mary a final voice? Not the best. I feel like I wasted my time and bought a different book about this instead.
