The Princess Dolls

Review

"A lovely, old-fashioned-feeling story, focused squarely on the girls' friendship, that acknowledges danger and injustice—but at a distance. A quaint historical about one of the effects of War World II for those who don't want an intense war story." (Kirkus Reviews 2018-08-30)"The Princess Dolls is a gentle story about friendship, set against the backdrop of 1942 Vancouver. Mariko Ando's evocative black-and-white illustrations add to the charm of this sweet and haunting story." (Quill & Quire 2018-09-01)

Admittedly, I'm a Maxwell fan, but it was great to have my teen read this as I read the adult version. I love the "journal it" concept within each chapter and wish those would show up in some of his other works. Very well outlined and the perfect lesson for many high schoolers as they face rejection for the first time through sports, arts, socially, or even college selections.

My daughter needed this book for school. She read this over the summer and told me many things about the book that impressed her. After hearing her opinion of the book, I was very appreciative to this author for producing such a positive, confidence building piece of literature for teens. Thanks, John C. Maxwell!

Perfect book for teens..I totally recommend this

Amazing book I absolutely love it I feel every teen needs this book.

We used this book and did an excellent driving tour on many Italian back roads. We liked the book so much, we ordered this one for a family member. Great book and excellent service.

Clear, concise and layout makes it very easy to use. Can't yet vouch for accuracy because our trip hasn't started but we used the book to plan the trip. The thumbnail color photos are well done as are the short descriptions of places to go and see.

Great book. Very informative and map will be incredibly useful on our day trips!

Small Book Packed With Great InformationWonderful descriptions of some out of the way places with suggested itineraries for driving. It will be a great resource for our trip in July.

Clear directions getting places not usually covered in guide books. Even Rick Steeves thinks Italy stops at Sorrento. The region of Apuglia was wonderful.

"Back roads" is not a term I really associate with Italy. This is more "main roads sufficiently distant from top tourist attractions to attract a certain sort of tourist." It is a good book. If you know you want a driving holiday in Italy, but you don't know where - you should get this and read the whole thing. Eyewitness creates a basic itinerary and they further lure you with lovely pictures.Um...if you know which region you want to go, you should buy a guide to that region and you'll get much more helpful advice. It's really pointless outside of whatever drives are directly relevant to your trip.

Although we're not even close to another trip, this book with its easy-to-read information and great maps is a treasure!

It was very helpful and easy to read and up to date on the areas we drove to. Interesting places to check out!

It's a cute story and had potential to be great but fell short a bit in two areas. The basic story is fairly simple - our heroine, Miranda is housesitting for our hero Gianni's aunt when he needs a place to lay low from media attention for a couple of weeks. At the same time he wants to bond with his young son Liam, who spends virtually all his time in the care of nannies. After waking up in bed together (because he arrived so late and didn't notice her in the darkened room and she was too tired to notice) the sparks fly between the two adults while the young boy provides a humorous backdrop. It's a cute story with some romantic bickering, his learning to not be quite so hopeless with his son and a few dramatic misunderstandings. The ups and downs are well played as is the breakup before they find their happy ever after. It's a very cute story and worth a read but there are still a couple things that irked me just a bit which is why I gave it three instead of four stars. The first was the son disappearing too early in the book (for me) and not reappearing until the epilogue (though his wedding bit was very, very cute). The other was the amount of inner dialogue during some of the conversations, it could be two or three pages between lines in the conversation. Neither of these truly distract from the story though.

Miranda was house sitting and Gianni came into the house in the middle of the night with his young son and crawled into bed. He didn't realize he had got into bed with the lovely Miranda. The next morning when they met sparks were flying between the oh so handsome Italian and the feisty red head. But I have to tell you. I found the dialog hard to follow. I never warmed up to the characters, they were dull as dish water. As a matter of fact I never like Gianni at all. I really hated this book and I can't recommend it at all.

I really enjoyed reading this book. It was not your typical harlequin formula with commanding arrogant hero and doormat heroine. I liked both Gianni and Miranda. I dont like to give spoilers but, it sometimes helps u decides whether or not to read a book. The one scene that totally ticked me off was when commitment phobic Gianni shuts the door in Mirries face after she tells him she loves him. This book was well written and thers lots of banter between the two h's.

If you are a long time Harlequin reader you will enjoy this short read. If you want a more in-depth romantic interlude look somewhere else.

Gianni is a single father to a sweet four year old. He travels to his aunt's house not knowing that his aunt is away and a house sitter in her place. Gianni bit off more than he could chew when embarking on his drive there and retires soon after arrival. However, he didn't count on the bed being occupied by another. Miranda had recently been hurt by her identical twin sister - stealing the man she had wanted for herself. Gianni has his own baggage. They are drawn to one another and before you know it have set up an arrangement that seems slightly FWB like. Soon Gianni decides that his baggage is more than he can handle and he uses his son's emotional well-being as an excuse to push away from Miranda. Why is it that the H's pain is ALWAYS more than the h's and he gets to hold on to it longer? Gianni doesn't always abide by the rules he set forth and Miranda doesn't think it odd to not visit him in the city. So she does. She discovers him w/ OW, but she still puts herself out there for him. Gianni sees her in her vulnerability and shuts the door on her face! Of course, he hurts her and realizes two months later that he is constantly missing her. He tracks her down w/ the help of that twin sister of hers and attempts to make things right. Did I buy it? Honestly, I didn't care that much. For some reason I found this story didn't grab me much. Perhaps it was the whole waking up in bed together w/out ever knowing Gianni had climbed in w/ her.

Bitwise: A Life in Code, by David Auerbach

Review

“A hybrid of memoir, technical primer and social history . . . [Auerbach] suggests that we need to be bitwise (i.e. understand the world through the lens of computers) as well as worldwise . . . We need guides on this journey—judicious, balanced and knowledgeable commentators, like Auerbach.” —The New York Times Book Review"[A] fun and informative memoir of a life in coding explains what makes coding deeply fascinating, and is tamped full, like a scientist's experiment in sphere-packing, of history, fact, and anecdote." —Popular Mechanics, Best Sci/Tech Books of the Year “A valuable resource for readers seeking to understand themselves in this new universe of algorithms, as data points and as human beings.” —The New Republic  “With wit and technical insight, former Microsoft and Google engineer Auerbach explains how his knowledge of coding helped form him as a person, at the same time showing how coding has influenced aspects of culture such as personality tests and child-rearing . . . An enjoyable look inside the point where computers and human life join.” —Publisher’s Weekly“An eye-opening look at computer technology and its discontents and limitations.” —Kirkus Reviews “A profound memoir, a manifesto, and a warning about the digital world. Auerbach spins out the secret history of the computational universe we all live in now, filtering insider technical know-how through a profoundly humanistic point of view like no book since Gödel, Escher, Bach.”  —Jordan Ellenberg, author of How Not to Be Wrong “Auerbach artfully combines a personal and professional narrative with a philosophical examination of the way the real and digital worlds contrast and intertwine. It is a subject that will take on ever more importance as algorithms continue to gain dramatically more power and influence throughout our world.” —Martin Ford, author of Rise of the Robots “Very attractive (in all senses). The sentences resemble something both plain and clear, like a Shaker desk—a kind of generous transparency, and about things that are not transparent at all.” —John Crowley, author of Little, Big “A delightful journey through the history of personal computing. It succeeds brilliantly at conveying what it’s like to be a coder and at exploding common stereotypes. I couldn’t stop reading.” —Scott Aaronson, David J. Bruton Centennial Professor of Computer Science, University of Texas at Austin

Bitwise isn’t so much a continuous narrative of a life as a set of reflections on not just his life but the data-trolling business that increasingly conditions our choices as individuals. Auerbach worked first for Microsoft (a wonderful account of life in the Microsoft trenches) and then for Google. His comparison of the two is insightful and helpful.“I had coded servers at Microsoft, but Microsoft’s entire business was based around the PC desktop. That focus was one of the primary reason Microsoft found it hard to shift into the internet age, where the locus was not a home or workplace but a web server or database somewhere else on the internet –what’s today known as the “cloud,” the amorphous mass of data around and above us, only dimly visible. Unlike Microsoft, Google knew servers from the beginning. .. All engineers shared a single enormous code repository, rather than having a different repository for each team, as Microsoft had had…. These machines were always running, and they were always running my code. …The more significant difference was data. Microsoft had succeeded as a software company, [but] Google’s lifeblood was data. Google needed software got collect, store and manage this data, but at Google, software served data.… [T]he general approach at Google was to see how much could be gotten out of what little explicit structure was there.”This is a visual book, with many pictures and charts and spell outs of segments of computer code. If you’re not a programmer yourself, some of the code passages fall flat but the overall effect still moves forward, and it feels like Auerbach is taking the reader seriously: “I’m not going to shortchange you. Maybe you won’t follow me every step but you’ll know all the way along that I’m not hiding things from you.”More importantly, it is filled with occasional, and on the edge, insights into our new and rapidly emerging digital world, its opportunities and its pitfalls.A side point: Auerbach pursued a dual path in his youth, computers on one side, philosophy and literature on the other. It’s an attractive merger because, as he makes clear over and over, computer and data surfing issues are also human issues, which affect the quality of lives and even how we conceive of ourselves as human beings. The downside is the occasional use of a literary or philosophical quotation that doesn’t seem quite to hit the mark. The upside is a wider spectrum to examine the effects of today’s computer life on human life. One of the loveliest, and most insightful, segments of the book is Auerbach’s observations on the growing life of his first child, reflecting on it from what he knows about computer learning. Reflecting on his daughter’s transformation in her first year, he writes about computer learning: “The process of creating artificial intelligence is coming to seem less a matter of coding up algorithms and more of applying algorithms to a growing system.”This is a serious book about serious matters. It is also gracious, thoughtful, questing. Here are some random observations from the book.A footnote on p. 24: ”Processor development has gradually relaxed the idea that a computer is a calculator performing strictly ordered operations at increasing speeds.”A discussion of the largely French literary movement, Oulipo: authors like Queneau, Perec, Calvino (one of my favorites), Harry Matthews, who wrote deliberately mathematical constraints (a missing letter in Queneau, use of the taro deck to set story in Calvino). Two different times, schemata to explain the organization of James Joyce’s Ulysses and Finnegan’s Wake.He cites William Wimsatt: scientific theories are “piecewise approximations to reality.”He dumps all over Jung for unsupported assumptions about the nature of human reality. One of the most reliably expensive keywords over the last fifteen years was “mesothelioma,” bid on primarily by law firms looking for asbestos victims. Many law and insurance keywords go for over a hundred dollars per single click. In 20916 “best melothelioma lawyer” cost you over $900 a click. The observation that the Software giants look for low cost, low risk advances, and not revolutionary new approaches. “Google avoids trying to grasp the meaning of the web pages it retrieves. Apple revived its brand with new hardware rather than innovative software. Microsoft succeeded by slightly outperforming competitors… Google, Amazon, and Facebook are less valuable for their algorithms and for their state.: the sum total of all the data the system contains and manipulates. None of these companies can clear out their systems and ‘start over,’ algorithmically.”An interesting but fairly trivial fact about David Auerbach: he was responsible for the creation of the first ever Emoticon. (Non-information expressed as information.)

There is a great book to be written at the intersection of computing in literature but this one is not it. What starts as an exploration of someone who grew up in the 80s with computers worked with them professionally and then became a writer meanders into parenting, society, big data and literature at large in a very confused world.

The book wanders between topics, but the topics are all interesting and the connections made between them are often insightful. There are a lot of neat references to well known and obscure video games from decades ago, with thoughtful lessons drawn from those games and applied to current technology trends and challenges. The prose are well written, the content is thoughtful, and the author is an expert in the areas discussed. One of the quotes on the back compares it to Godel Escher Bach, which I think is a fair comparison in style and type of appeal -- you will probably have a similar opinion on both books, be that good or bad.

Full disclosure: I'm friends with David and read an earlier draft of the book to give pre-publication feedback.Bitwise is about the lessons that computing can teach us about human nature, and vice versa. The writing is by turns erudite, funny, and touching.

with the title containing "A Life in Code" the reader might be excused for thinking this is a book about what it is like to work in the software industry so prominent in our world today. Topics such as what the education is like and experiences on the first job and then growth in the career are ignored. Instead this book is a rambling meditation on a variety of topics only tangentially related (if at all) to understanding the life of a software professional. Aside from learning that the author didn't much care for the politics at Microsoft and admires Google (where, he tells us, he was in the top 10% of engineers) you won't come away from this book with much more understanding of the career and the people that work in the field than you started.

Loved it. Very refreshing narrative. This book kept me interested the entire way through. It you enjoy either computers or philosophy, check this book out.

What's Making Our Children Sick?: How Industrial Food Is Causing an Epidemic of Chronic Illness, and What Parents (and Doctors) Can Do About It

Review

“Through surveys, doctors’ reports, and countless firsthand discussions, we are aware that thousands of people get better from a wide range of diseases and conditions soon after switching to a non-GMO organic diet. This outstanding book not only sees the results every day in Dr. Perro’s practice, but has also connected the dots with the science. What’s Making Our Children Sick? should be required reading for every doctor, every mom, and anyone seeking to prevent or reverse a chronic condition.”―Jeffrey M. Smith, author of Seeds of Deception and Genetic Roulette; codirector of Secret IngredientsKirkus Reviews- "Medical professionals join the debate over the safety of our food supply with the claim that toxic foods are causing hard-to-diagnose chronic health problems in children.Pediatrician Perro, former director of the pediatric emergency department at New York's Metropolitan Hospital and attending physician at Oakland Children's Hospital, and Adams (Vice Chair, Medical Anthropology/Univ. of California, San Francisco; Metrics: What Counts in Global Health, 2016, etc.) team up to document this phenomenon and to argue that the solution is a new model of ecomedicine that promotes the treatment value of healthy food. Genetically modified foods come in for especially close scrutiny. Perro's practice provides clinical case studies illustrating the many health problems of children―allergies, asthma, rashes, gastrointestinal issues, autoimmune disorders, and cognitive malfunction―that frustrated parents have brought to her attention and that she has successfully treated. The authors also delve into the rise of agrochemical technologies and the current practices of industrial food production, especially with regard to GMO crops. They explore what biomedical sciences are beginning to learn about the connection between pesticides and organ systems, and they question the effectiveness of American Medical Association guidelines for medical practice, which they assert do not reflect scientific information. Physicians, they write, must think beyond the pill. The ecomedicine model calls for a recognition that our internal ecosystems can only be as healthy as our external environmental ecosystems. In their demand for a revolution in our food production system, as well as in our medical approach to chronic disorders, the authors acknowledge the need for scientists, educators, politicians, health professionals, and farmers to become involved, but they single out mothers as powerful agents of change. An accessible read with a title designed to catch the attention of worried mothers and a message that will be vigorously challenged by a host of agribusiness and pharmaceutical industry spokespeople and segments of the medical profession. "“It would be difficult for anyone to read this powerful book with even a halfway open mind and not conclude that our industrialized system of food production is in urgent need of major reform. The routine claim that genetically engineered foods are well-regulated, well-tested, and wholesome crumples in the face of the facts that are skillfully woven together in this monumental work.”―Steven M. Druker, author of Altered Genes, Twisted Truth: How the Venture to Genetically Engineer Our Food Has Subverted Science, Corrupted Government, and Systematically Deceived the Public“Chronic diseases that were once rare are now plaguing children and adults alike in industrialized nations such as the United States. The patient case histories that Dr. Perro and Dr. Adams describe in What’s Making Our Children Sick? provide compelling evidence for advocating lifestyle changes, especially dietary medicine intervention, for overcoming these chronic ailments. And science increasingly provides explanations for such success. We now know that the balance of our gut bacteria (microbiome) is crucial to health and that imbalance, causing gut dysbiosis, is at least a contributing factor to a vast range of chronic illnesses, both physical and mental. Poor diet is no doubt a major contributory factor in causing gut dysbiosis. By eliminating pesticide and GMO-laden food from the diet and replacing it with organic wholefoods as part of her lifestyle medicine approach, Dr. Perro succeeds where standard pharmaceuticals fail. This should be enough for all to take note and follow suit.”―Michael Antoniou, molecular geneticist, King’s College London; coauthor of GMO Myths and Truths“The sharp rise of severe allergies, brain disorders, and other chronic illnesses among America’s children has left many doctors stumped, finding themselves unable to offer lasting cures or even successfully manage sometimes devastating symptoms. Enter Dr. Michelle Perro, an integrative food-forward family physician who has had excellent results helping children and adults overcome chronic disease. Even if you’re already familiar with the controversies surrounding genetically modified foods and healthy eating, you will learn a lot from Perro and Adams’s carefully researched, science-oriented book. A compelling and important read. Highly recommended.”―Jennifer Margulis, PhD, author of Your Baby, Your Way: Taking Charge of Your Pregnancy, Childbirth, and Parenting Decisions for a Happier, Healthier Family“With her extensive experience as a director and attending in Pediatric Emergency Medicine and her current integrative practice and health advocacy, Dr. Michelle Perro has teamed up with coauthor Vincanne Adams, whose expertise from medical anthropology is a perfect complement to the clinical perspective; together they have produced a powerful book. Their analysis carefully examines the scientific evidence and patient responses to the disruptive effects of chemicals contaminating our food, water, and the environment, and their damaging effects on our children. What’s Making Our Children Sick? exposes the hype of genetic engineering, both its flawed science and failed promises that have wreaked havoc on our health. Using their medical experience and case studies, Perro and Adams offer welcome alternatives to restore our health and hope for our future.”―Don M. Huber, emeritus professor, Purdue University“Having seen firsthand how Dr. Michelle Perro works miracles with children in her clinical practice, I am delighted to see that she has made her insights and approach widely accessible in this groundbreaking book. What’s Making Our Children Sick? combines the latest research on gut health and the microbiome with concerning evidence about the dangers of genetically modified and industrial foods to elucidate the perfect storm that is damaging our children’s health today. Most importantly, it offers practical and actionable solutions for both parents and practitioners to help children recover their health.”―Akil Palanisamy, MD, Harvard-trained physician; author of The Paleovedic Diet“Doctors Perro and Adams have made the complex topic of the interrelationship between the gut, brain, and the food our kids eat accessible to all. In my own experience, autism recovery is rarely possible without a dietary overhaul and a focus on whole, organic, and natural foods. This book is a welcome resource for parents struggling with their children’s chronic health conditions.”―J. B. Handley, cofounder, Generation Rescue“What’s Making Our Children Sick? is a true clarion call to parents, physicians, and policymakers everywhere to change the way we grow the food we eat. Unless we move away from industrialized food sources that are created for the lowest short-term costs, we and our children will continue to experience increased chronic disease, immune dysfunction, and mental health problems. The transformation of our nutrition is not simply for our children and us, but also for future generations and our dear planet. It is almost as though we are all Romans drinking wine out of lead-lined bottles. Future generations will wonder why we have been so blind, deaf, and dumb.”―Dana Ullman, MPH, CCH, author of Homeopathic Medicine for Children and Infants and The Homeopathic Revolution“Industrial medicine and agriculture, with wholesale government approval, have caused an epidemic of chronic childhood illness largely traceable to ubiquitous poisons and alien DNA in our food supply. A clinical argument for organic foods, What’s Making Our Children Sick? is a stop-look-listen book for parents, doctors, teachers, and grocery shoppers everywhere.”―Carol Van Strum, author of A Bitter Fog: Herbicides and Human Rights

Dr. Perro and Dr. Adams provide a clear, compelling and very readable discussion of what's making too many of our children sick. They prescribe a simple, radical remedy: a food-focused approach to treatment. As Perro and Adams describe why our children's bodies (and our own) stagger and stumble under the toxic load in the genetically modified and pesticide-laced food we put on the table, they stress the benefits of organic food and the value of eliminating indigestible and/or harmful staples of the American diet. This is an important book that explores the far-reaching consequences of how our food is produced and helps to explain the frightening rise in gastrointestinal, autoimmune, and psychiatric illnesses among American children. Its well-researched arguments are backed by science and rendered accessible to the lay reader, enlivened by clinical case studies from pediatrician Perro's practice in northern California. Its spirit is impassioned yet even-handed, ending with a call to activism. Highly recommended reading for parents of young children as well as the general public.

Perro and Adams have written an informative, well-researched and thought-provoking book for parents and health care professionals alike. It’s easy to read (much to my surprise and delight) and offers some common sense and simple solutions to help make ourselves and our kids healthier (eat organic, non-GMO foods for starters). Cleaning up the industrial food supply in the United States is a monstrous challenge, but as Dr. Perro has repeatedly demonstrated, by adopting a food-focused approach to medicine, we can improve the mental and physical health of our families by making better food choices and cleaning up our kids’ guts. I gifted this book to all my relatives with young children and I highly recommend it for your family too.

This book has become my "go to" gift for all new parents. It is informative, easy to read, easy to understand and gives concrete steps for parents to take to improve their child's health. I wish I had this information when my own children were small!

An excellent & informative book. Great read. It’s a must for everyone who cares about what’s in your food & how it affects us all, children & adults. I highly recommend this book.

Amazing and necessary book by 2 trusted professionals

Yes, this is research-based wonderful truth.

Great read and spot on with what she talks about!

This book was eye-opening, and quite honestly, frightening. After cutting gluten and dairy out of my diet, I've lost 20 lbs. I've had chronic knee pain for about 15 years (I'm only 29!) And since I've made these changes in my diet, all of my joint pains have gone away. I also was struggling for 2 years with infertility and had 3 early losses... After seeking help from a specialist who wanted to pump me full of hormones it was a wake up call to get to the root of my problems. Since the diet change I've been able to successfully get pregnant without the help of God only knows what type of drugs, and am well in to my second trimester with a healthy pregnancy. This book is life changing and worth the read!

From this height, he looked east and west along the rough barrier ice forced against the coastline as far as he could see. He looked back along his trail of footprints across the snow-covered shore to his father’s igloo, now almost hidden by the three hills that protected it from the howling winds that rushed over their island. Tiktaliktak’s people were sea hunters, singers, carvers, builders of sleek kayaks, masters of swift dog teams, whale hunters, listeners at the breathing places in the ice. Because his father had always been a clever hunter, Tiktaliktak had grown up knowing only good times in the house of his family. There had always been great sea beasts for feasting, fat red trout, snow geese, and sometimes meat from the swift herds of caribou that roved beyond the mountains on the inland plain. There had also been singing and laughter in the house of his father, and hunters from distant camps had come to visit, bringing with them their whole families. But at the end of this winter, the animals had fled from the plain. The birds had not yet returned from the south, and the fish remained locked beneath the frozen lakes. The wind had blown in the wrong direction during the moons of February and March, holding masses of loose ice against the shores so that no man could travel or hunt on the sea. It was a time for starving. Tiktaliktak thought of his family lying in the dark snowhouse without food for themselves or seal oil for their lamps. Hunger stirred within him. He knew he must find a way to help them. The young Inuk climbed carefully down from his high place on the ice through the great pieces that surrounded him like sharp white teeth. The sea ice that lay before him had been broken many times. It had opened and closed and frozen again until he did not know where to place his feet for fear of falling through. In some places, the ice was much thicker than the height of a man; in other spots, it was thinner than his little finger. A light layer of new snow covered everything, hiding the danger from his eyes. Before each step, Tiktaliktak felt the ice in front of him with the chisel on the end of his harpoon. Many times the sharp point broke through the thin surface and water flooded over the snow at his feet. He was forced to try one way and then another before finding ice strong enough to hold his weight. He moved forward cautiously, so that it took a long time to travel even a short distance. Tiktaliktak was lean and strong for his age, with a handsome tanned face, wide cheekbones, and a fine hawklike nose. Like all the people of his race, he possessed quick dark eyes with the lids drawn narrow for protection against long winters on the treeless plain, where they hunted in the wind and sun and snow. He wore narrow-slitted sun goggles. His square white teeth flashed when he smiled, and his jaw muscles, strong from eating meat, showed clearly. His hair hung straight and black almost to his shoulders. It glistened in the cold morning sunlight like the bright new wings of an Arctic butterfly, and the butterfly was Tiktaliktak’s namesake. Tiktaliktak wished most of all to be a good hunter. He could already throw a harpoon with great skill and drive an arrow straight to its mark. He thrilled at the songs and chanting and the great whirling and drumming of the hunters as they performed the autumn and midwinter dances before the hunt. But the magic of the dancers, and all their hunts, had failed them this year. As he moved slowly forward testing the ice, Tiktaliktak saw before him the trail made by a huge white bear. Each of its paws had left a mark in the snow as large as if a man had sat down. Looking closely, Tiktaliktak could see that the tracks were fresh and new, for the print of each pad was still sharp and clear. The bear must have been hungry, too, for its track led away from the land, which meant it had been forced to make the long crossing in search of new hunting grounds. Tiktaliktak hoped that the bear had not seen him, for he did not wish to fight on this thin ice. Farther along, he could see where the bear’s immense weight had broken through the ice, but this meant nothing to the huge beast with its thick waterproof fur. It had crawled out of the freezing water and continued on its way. Tiktaliktak traveled until late afternoon. Ahead of him lay the dark stretch of sea water beyond the ice. Half hidden in the winter fog above the water flew thousands of seabirds in thick black flocks. They gave the young hunter new strength, for he knew that there must also be seals in the dark water, and the birds and seals would provide food and oil for the lamps of his people. Small icebergs caught and frozen fast towered above his head, offering him shelter in their weird shadowy blue caves. In the haze beyond them, water and ice and sky seemed to blend into one. The pale orange sun was surrounded by a great circle of light. In this circle appeared four false suns and beyond them four more. These reflections, called sun dogs, were seldom seen, and Tiktaliktak knew they were a warning of storms to come. His people believed them to be the team of dogs pulling the sun on its endless journey through the sky. When Tiktaliktak reached the edge of the sea ice, he saw many flocks of birds upon the water. Excitedly, he began to plan the hunt. He would hide downwind of the birds, behind a large piece of upturned ice near the water’s edge. The rafts of birds would drift near enough for his arrows to reach them, and when hit, the birds would float in to him. Nearer and nearer drifted the birds, in countless screaming numbers. Tiktaliktak’s arrows flew straight, and the birds they hit floated in as he had hoped, all save one small seabird that floated past the point where he was hiding and was blown by the wind to the far edge of the ice. When his last arrow was gone, Tiktaliktak stood up. A few birds took off in panic, and then the others followed in great flights. They flew down the coast beyond his sight. Tiktaliktak picked the soft warm feathered birds out of the water, and after recovering his arrows, he piled them on the ice and started out after the small bird that had drifted beyond him. With much difficulty, he finally reached it with his harpoon and pulled it to the edge of the ice. When he turned to retrace his steps to the pile of birds, a huge crack had opened in the ice, barring his path. It was too wide to jump. Tiktaliktak realized with horror that he could not return. He was drifting out to sea on a large pan of ice, carried by the rising wind and tide. It was growing colder and soon would be dark. Tiktaliktak squatted on the ice and ate the small seabird, thinking of the precious pile of food only a short distance away. He would never see it again, nor perhaps his home. He felt somewhat better after eating the bird and with his short knife tried to pry loose some ice to build a small snowhouse. But all he could manage was to stand some flat pieces upright, leaning them together like a tent. The cracks between the ice he filled with snow to complete a rough protection against the night wind. Curled up in this tiny shelter, he dared not sleep for fear of freezing. All through the night, the small ice island moved with the tide. It sighed and groaned, and he wondered if it would break apart and cast him into the freezing sea. When dawn came, he walked around his tiny frozen island, waving his arms to warm himself. He wondered about his family and what they must be thinking. The open water around his moving ice floe sent moisture into the freezing air. It rose as a dark fog against the pale light of morning and fell back into the leaden sea, covering his ice floe with countless frost crystals that turned it into a silent, shimmering magic place. Stories copyright © 1965 (Tiktaliktak), 1967 (The White Archer),1968 (Akavak), and 1971 (Wolf Run) by James HoustonIntroduction copyright © 2006 by Theodore TaylorAll rights reserved. This book is a set of stories set in the Arctic, long before snow mobiles, rifles, or any modern technology that has changed the lives of people living in a stone age culture. Simply and beautifully written, this book would be suitable for an older child or teenager, but also fascinating for adults interested in Eskimo life. Each of the stories describes a character overcoming serious challenges, often the threat of starvation. I found each one engaging and evocative, so much so that sometimes I stopped reading for a while, because I couldn't stand the feeling of intense cold that the the author keeps the reader feeling! As a dog trainer, I was especially interested in the descriptions of sled dogs and how they were handled - hardly the way we treat our domestic dogs today. But I imagine very real! I also read Houston's The White Dawn, a more serious, adult-level book, and loved it. I highly recommend this Treasury to anyone interested in native life in the Arctic.I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in life in the Arctic.

James Houston lived with the Inuit for 14 years. These legends are among those he collected. I enjoyed reading them very much. I remember reading many collections of legends as a child that, truth be told, were pretty dull. However, these have a lot of action and real narrative arcs that would keep any reader engaged. I especially liked the tale "The White Archer," which reminded me of the The Searchers, if that movie weren't racist and misogynist and instead carried a message of cultural toleration and understanding. (I suspect that someone will write a comment saying The Searchers isn't that bad, but I don't care. I can't stand that movie.)Anyway, the point is that this book is good and I think kids and adults both would find it an excellent read.

#2,815,138 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

We used this during our little adult only side trip while in Europe on vacation. Small, insightful and just what we needed to get around Crete without a tour guide. It informed us that Cretans use the shoulder on the highway just like another lane. Unwritten rule: slower traffic "has" to move to the shoulder, so the faster cars can pass them. If not, you'll have someone glued to your rear bumper on the single lane highway the entire trip.

I should copy and paste my plaudits for the DK travel guides, because they are uniformly splendid in their informativeness and maps, photos, and diagrams. Read this, plan your trip accordingly, and GO!

This book is a perfect size for travelers, it fits nicely in a pocket, but in shrinking the size, the publishers shrank the type as well, to the point where it is difficult to read.More serious is the lack of organization -- much of the information is redundant and poorly classified. It appears to have been thrown together without much editing. For larger cities, these defects would render it unacceptable, but it is difficult to find good travel books on Crete, and the content is better than most, which is why I rated it 3 stars.

Exactly what we need for our trip. We always plan ahead and like to know what to expect. This is perfect.

Great job! Thank you!

Helpful and some very nice ideas of the best of what is available in Crete.Maybe not quite enough information.

Bien pour visiter la Crete

as always, I love these travel books. If you don't know anything about a location you plan to visit, this is a great place to start.

Simply reading the play is a wonderful way to recall the Christmas story, with all of the Biblical threads woven together into a cohesive whole. I can't wait to experience it on Christmas Eve as our small congregation does the reader's theater version. Simple, clear, powerful, and written by someone who both knows the story and knows the church, how quirky our resources often are for dramatic presentations. There are lots of ways to adapt it for different situations. Gary let me read a copy in advance, and I'm so glad he did!

Good for adults or church play. I like the correlation with biblical text. It doesn't require scenery or many props.

great

I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author on the condition that I post an honest review. The four words above are the ones that come most readily to mind after having read this wonderful work. On a first read, one might well think, "What's the big deal? Everything's just copied from Scripture." This is true -- and yet, the gentle, faithful and nuanced way that Hansen has assembled it truly brings the Christmas Story to life in a unique fashion.Elegant -- because the entire script is from the Bible (which is much more concise than most of what's written today), but also because of the thoughtful ways Hansen assigns readings to various characters. Simplicity also comes to mind here. This production clearly highlights the Story (as opposed to stagecraft or acting, e.g.), and the author adds a minimum of direction that, because of its infrequent use, is all the more effective in communicating to the audience.Powerful -- As I read the play and imagine various people reading the parts aloud, the power of this re-telling quickly becomes clear. The entire story is read, but not just by one person. Nor is it shared by a succession of people walking up to the lectern, reading a passage, then leaving to let the next person have their turn. The use of people on a stage to give voice to the actual people in the Story, with minimalist staging, provides a more organic setting for the telling of the Story, one that allows the voices and the narrative to come forth in a uniquely powerful and faithful way. Furthermore, the Christmas Story IS a powerful story in and of itself; where we so often fail is in trying to modify it in some way as to add something that we think is missing, or needs to be emphasized. This production humbly (and refreshingly) refrains from this tack. As a consequence, the audience gets the "original, unedited, unadulterated" story all by itself -- and this allows the Story to fully express its authentic power.Accessible -- Both practically and intellectually. Again, because Hansen has added nothing, one can assume that most people in the audience have already heard most, if not all, of these words before. Neither the audience nor the readers are asked to examine or explore a (possibly disorienting) new "twist" or interpretation. The familiarity and simplicity of the narrative allow the audience to enter into the story with a minimum of preparation. Even for those who have never heard the story, the unadorned biblical narrative is quite simple and free of the distracting "fluff" that is added to so much of what we read and hear today. Practically, this production does not ask from the readers the kinds of theatrical talent that most stage productions do. Any church or faith group, no matter how small, could produce this play, and with far less rehearsal time and stage production that other dramatizations may require.Biblical -- This is probably the production's greatest strength. It uses the English Standard Version (ESV) translation, a relatively new translation, yet one that seeks to be more faithful to the original Greek and Hebrew than many other contemporary translations that attempt to make the scripture more "relevant" or "understandable." I personally think this translation has the least potential for raising concerns (or eyebrows) among any congregation, regardless of their theological bent. And as I wrote above, Hansen has added nothing in the way of his own words or explanations, but rather allows the scripture to stand on its own.In sum, this is a faithful telling of the Christmas Story that allows the powerful Biblical witness to stand on its own. It provides a minimum of voicing and stage direction that, although spare (or perhaps because it is spare), lifts the story out from the lips of a solitary reader or narrator and allows both the readers and the audience to see and hear this event in a way that is fresh, yet never novel. Hansen is to be commended for his gentle, respectful, nuanced and masterful stewardship of this precious and life-giving Story.

This is a deceptively simple and beautiful Christmas play. I received a free copy in return for writing an honest review, but I will tell you that if I hadn't liked it, I would have kept the review to myself. I wish I had received the copy in time to produce the play in 2015. As it is, we still may try to pull it off, not as a Sunday school production, but as our Christmas Eve worship service. Gary Neal Hansen has a way of thinking and writing (you will see this in his other books) that allows for a deep examination or very moving interpretation, using words that literally anyone who speaks English can comprehend. The staging of the play is very simple, and the costuming could be anything from very lavish to non-existent.I invite you to take a look at this very scriptural play and see if it would not be maybe the most interesting Christmas play that your church has seen in a long while.

Christmas Play is an incredibly refreshing aid for the Christmas season. It is simple, using essentially only the word of scripture, but smartly presented in a "readers' theater" format that allows for these words from scripture that we know all so well to take on a new and fresh vibrancy. The pacing and the staging presented are both powerful and lively, but simple enough that nearly any church could put this production on with relative ease. The format is also flexible, in that it could be done simply with a handful of readers seated in chairs, or presented with a full case of children and youth, along with adults. I could easily see a youth group putting on this production on their own, while at the same time picturing participants of all ages taking part in it.It seems that most pageants and nativity plays are either musical concerts with connecting scenes in between the songs, or they are cutesy productions for kids which simply try to fawn over children in costumes.Christmas Play takes the text and the story simply, but also does so in a thoughtful and caring way. I cannot wait to be able to put on a production of this play in my congregation, and I could not recommend this play more highly! Merry Christmas![I was given an advance copy of the play to review, but this in no way influenced my review].

Biblically faithful and harmoniously arranged in a coherent, logical sequence, this simple adaptation of nativity and incarnation texts from three Gospels (Matthew, Luke, and John) assigns the words of Scripture in a fresh way to various voices and characters. Thus, e.g., we have Herod growling that the darkness not has been able to overcome the light. Wonderful! With this creative approach, Hansen invites congregations to read and hear anew the canonical account of Christ's first advent in a way that will strengthen faith, inspire worship, and provoke delight. Thank you for doing this, Gary. Good for you! And good for the church that performs Christmas Play!

I had the distinct pleasure of performing this play earlier this year and played the role of Herod. The play is not your standard Christmas play and those differences underscore its importance and beauty. Topics and situations illustrated throughout this play cover the entire Christmas story and follows the scripture as closely as I have ever seen. Great work Dr. Hansen.
