About the Author

Jeffrey T. Prince is Professor of Business Economics & Public Policy and Harold A. Poling Chair in Strategic Management at Indiana University’s Kelley School of Business. He received his B.A. in economics and B.S. in mathematics and statistics from Miami University in 1998 and earned a Ph.D. in economics from Northwestern University in 2004. Prior to joining Indiana University, he taught graduate and undergraduate courses at Cornell University.Jeff has won top teaching honors as a faculty member at both Indiana University and Cornell, and as a graduate student at Northwestern. I'm just a few classes into an MBA program, but this is definitely the most helpful book so far. Lots of info and easy to read. It's a little repetitive sometimes, but not too bad. I'm renting this one from Amazon, but I'll probably end up buying it later on.

The content was alright, but the user experience was AWFUL. I highly recommend to buy the hard copy and avoid any digital textbook formats. It was a fun experiment, but I wouldn't try it again.

“The steadfastness of the wise is but the art of keeping their agitation locked in their hearts.” (I’ll put in some more of my favorite quotes after each paragraph I write)François Duc De La Rochefoucauld was a French philosopher who lived 1613-80. This work, known widely as simply the Maxims, was his greatest accomplishment, and one of the defining works characterizing the thought of the French people as a whole during the latter 17th century. It’s certainly not what we are used to from philosophy, neither structured logical deductions, nor rigorous narrative. Rather, the Maxims is just what its name implies, full of mostly single sentence maxims, about 504 of which were published during his lifetime and another 136 only appearing posthumously. Do not be deceived by the simple nature of mere sentences though. La Rouchefoucauld published these individual insights into human nature as his entire life’s work.“Desire to appear clever often prevents our becoming so.”Written with only a loose organization, each individual maxim truly can stand alone as a single thought without much connection to its surroundings. They are mostly his philosophy of human nature written out of careful observations throughout his life. While alive, he was at times celebrated, others destitute, some famous, yet even more circumstances left him brokenhearted. However, his life was not so much different from a normal one like ours. What marks La Rochefoucauld out is his capacity for introspection and keen observation which penetrated the surface appearances as a type of x-ray into the heart of the human person.“Nobody deserves to be praised for goodness unless he is strong enough to be bad, for any other goodness is usually merely inertia or lack of will power.”This is, by all definitions, an absolutely terrifying read. As I made my way through, I had to keep a pencil nearby to star all of the maxims that were particularly insightful for me. I cannot say that I have read any other book, besides perhaps Albert Camus’ The Stranger (Link to my review), that I felt got behind my skin and into the secrets of my heart. As a Christian, this work was an examination of our common tendency towards self-righteousness, as well as a warning against thinking too highly of our own potential, individual or collective apart from God’s help.“We own up to minor failings, but only so as to convince others that we have no major ones.”La Rouchefoucauld was especially talented at exposing the reasons why people often act virtuously. Though certainly not a brute fact, we often seem to have reasons for being good other than our supposed virtuous character or good intentions. Many times we are doing it for ourselves, whether it is to be praised, to initiate a social obligation (aka a favor) to be redeemed in the future to the one we help, or just merely to give the appearance of being a great person.“We give help to others so that they have to do the same for us on similar occasions, and these kindnesses we do them are, to put it plainly, gifts we bestow on ourselves in advance.”His analysis spread across the vast range of human life, from the young to the old, rich and the poor, as well as to men and women. His eye seemed to catch even the smallest instances of hypocrisy that presented themselves under the guise of strength. Pure chance or luck was often the explanation he used to explain most characteristics. This is not a cop-out from true explanation though as if he were somehow upset that he was not a good person and therefore took this frustration out on others. La Rouchefoucauld really believed that our fortune or misfortune as young people contributed greatly to our future attitudes and morals.“Our wisdom is just as much at the mercy of chance as our property.”As a Christian struggling with notions of God’s providence, I found these maxims particularly illuminating to our situation. Bad events seem to strike at the most inopportune times, right when our path should have turned for the better. However, once we reach the other end of the tunnel, we think we have learned a lesson, only to make the same mistake once more.“Old people are fond of giving good advice; it consoles them for no longer being capable of setting a bad example.”Perhaps most significantly, La Rouchefoucauld spoke out against personal self-righteousness in moral matters. When we try to portray ourselves as having overcome huge obstacles, the stakes weren’t as high as we might try to tell ourselves. When we introduce ourselves to others, we try to appear as good as possible and ignore all of our moments of vice. When we do a good act, we try to make it seem like it came out of our virtuous character rather than appearing out of habit or the desire to look good oneself.“The man who thinks he loves a woman for her own sake is very much mistaken.”He thought our acts of goodness accompanied with pure intentions were much more rare than we would like to think, or than we would proclaim to others. We say our own good character and free will were behind all the good deeds we do.“When we resist our passions it is more on account of their weakness than our strength.”As a work, the Maxims should definitely be read by anyone who wants to think through the human condition with the aide of one of the foremost philosophers in our history. It is an extremely quick read, but should not be read too quickly. The maxims are designed to be pondered. Even so, La Rouchefoucauld wrote short purposefully, so that the reader’s attention would not wane during the most important insights he provides. Each sentence could be read in a mere 3-4 seconds, yet the impact of the Maxims endures through our days as we are both captivated by and distraught by La Rochefoucauld’s pessimistic insights into our shared nature.“To refuse to accept praise is to want to be praised twice over.”Reading this has made me understand just how important Christ’s example of self-sacrifice was. Christ’s death on the cross was truly, “for us.” God, complete in Godself for all eternity, not needing anything from anyone else, self-sufficient in every way, chose to create for our sake. Not only that, but, in response to our sin, chooses to love us and redeem us.“There are various forms of curiosity: one, based on self-interest, makes us want to learn what may be useful, another, based on pride, comes from a desire to know what others don’t.”Knowing that we often exhibit the condition La Rochefoucauld observed (though knowing it long before 1680 when it was published!), God still comes to be with us in the Holy Spirit to effect genuine love of the other. The Golden Rule is not merely a way to establish society in reciprocal good deeds (I’ll do good to you so you do good to me), but is rather the capacity for true love of our neighbor that God desires from all of us. Likewise, though reward is an element of our relationship with God, our love for God should always move far beyond merely what God can do for us. In response to the Maxims, we should hope for a much greater ability to help others out of pure motives, and to practice self-sacrifice in love.“We have more strength than will-power, and when we imagine things are impossible we are trying to make excuses to ourselves.”“We are never as fortunate or as unfortunate as we suppose.”“Our promises are made in proportion to our hopes, but kept in proportion to our fears.”

This tranalation lacks the elegance and wit of the Kronenberger translation. To enjoy the Duc's observations, look for a copy of that version, published by Random House in 1959.#9, for instance, in Kronenberger is "The passions are so selfish and unjust that, even when they seem most reasonable, to indulge them is a danger, to defy them a duty." This edition renders the maxim in a much more pedestrian way: "Our passions are so governed by injustice and self-interest that they are dangerous guides, suspect them most when they appear most logical."I am not convinced that fundamental passions are govened by intellect, logic or reason.

Rich with aphorisms that ring true today. A treasure.For example, "212. Folly pursues us throughout our lives, and the man whom we call wise is he whose follies are proportionate to his age and to his fortune."This Kindle version is not perfect, but the text at least is properly typed. Having this in electronic format is great for quick reads and for highlighting favorites, which Kindle also conveniently allows you to post to FB.

So insightful and snarky. Le Duc de La Rochefoucauld was definitely a man ahead of his time. His observations and comments on society are still applicable in many ways. Were he around today he would likely have his own talk show. A great read for someone who loves philosophy without the attached pretension.

La Rochefoucauld has a reputation as a cynic, but being called cynical can be an occupational hazard for truth tellers, . Many of his sayings are quite breathtaking to this lover of truth. Highly recommended. This is a well-translated edition.

His Maxims are perfect in describing human nature in only a few sentences. Even though that he wrote these maxims a long time ago they are still relevant today because human nature, love and other things that he talks about hasn't changed from when he wrote these maxims to today. There is a lot that people can learn by reading this book. I would recommend anyone to buy this book because it is a great book.

This is a book of short sayings, each of which represents the author's point of view on life. He's supremely cynical. His statements still ring remarkably true today. They comprise a whole philosophy of life. Everyone who spends any time considering the various facets of human nature and human behavior should read this book! I particularly like this translation.

For anyone who has questioned the motives of others or of himself or for the person who wishes to deal truly with his own passions, this is a great read. Written in small snippets of knowledge, La Rochefoucauld systematically redefines all virtues in terms of the vices behind them or simply in terms of self interest. How true this all rings!

I just opened my doctor book, and so far I love it. It is going to take a while to fill out some of these forms to get organized, but I’m excited to start. I purchased another book that didn’t work out because I needed more space for my doctor visit notes.I love the binder because if I need to add another page of notes or information, I can add paper to it. I love that the details don’t seem like information overload. Their is plenty of room to add to the folder.I have been looking for a doctors notebook for a while, but I was having a hard time spending the money on one without viewing it first. I am including plenty of pictures so someone can actually see inside the book before purchasing.

Just starting to use for my father's records, but it seems thorough and covers a lot of bases. I wish the pages were fillable online, that is my only reservation. Hand cramps!! But a very thoughtful and useful tool!

Ordered it by request for a friend whose mother in law was recently diagnosed with cancer. There will be numerous doctors appointments and this book is perfect for keeping track of everything. She can store all the appointment info., medical history, medication info., test results, etc easily.

Okay, so I have a chronic illness and I have been keeping my personal medical charts in a 3 ring binder. This book is super helpful because it offers forms to help you get that information organized. It shouldn't replace your medical files, but it should make the information easier to find rather than having to go back and look through all your chart notes trying to remember when you started a med or why you stopped taking it or when you got treatment. This is an excellent product.

I bought this for my Aging father. It was so hard to keep all his Dr's straight so this works great to keep all his medical information together. I take it with me when we take him to Dr. Appt and I have all his information on hand for when the Dr.s have questions. Great and useful product

I bought this for my Mother in law who came to live with us and trying to organize and learn about her medical stuff.I am buying another for myself. I have worked some pages to do other things and some are not used as much. I love the CD holder/card holders . I have added colored notebook dividers with tabs/pockets to be able to seperate each doctor. I had sticky tabs on but they fell off and the dividers really added ease to finding things.

This is my second copy. My first had a functional issue and when I returned it with this issue noted, the author immediately contacted me and sent me a complimentary copy to "make it right."This is a winter project for me (to enter info and organize). I am considering purchasing for parents to help both of them, as well as my brothers and I, have easier, more organized access to their medical info. So important for all of us, as our medical histories become more extensive.

Item arrived before the estimated date and came exactly as described. It is a lot to go through but once you get all the info filled in, this book is the most important thing I own now for taking care of my dad. They also shipped me an additional calendar separately since I ordered my book towards the end of the year they wanted to make sure that I had 3 full years of calendars in the book. This book provides a general survey of the main concepts, questions and results that have been developed in the recent interactions between quantum information, quantum computation and logic. Divided into 10 chapters, the books starts with an introduction of the main concepts of the quantum-theoretic formalism used in quantum information. Next, the book investigates the puzzling entanglement-phenomena and logically analyses the Einstein–Podolsky–Rosen paradox and introduces the reader to quantum computational logics, and new forms of quantum logic. The middle chapters investigate the possibility of a quantum computational semantics for a language that can express sentences like “Alice knows that everybody knows that she is pretty”, explore the mathematical concept of quantum Turing machine, and illustrate some characteristic examples that arise in the framework of musical languages. The book concludes with an analysis of recent discussions, and contains a Mathematical Appendix which is a survey of the definitions of all main mathematical concepts used in the book.

About the Author

Maria Luisa Dalla Chiara, professor emeritus of Logic and Philosophy of Science at the University Florence is a past president of the "International Quantum Structures Association", of the "Italian Society of Logic and Philosophy of Science" and a  past vice-president of the "Division of Logic, Methodology and Philosophy of Science". She is the author of  books and articles concerning the following fields: quantum logic, quantum computation, foundations and philosophy of quantum theory, semantics of physical theories, theories of meaning, semantics of music.Roberto Giuntini, professor of Logic and Philosophy of Science at the University of Cagliari, is president of the "Italian Society of Logic and Philosophy of Science" and past president of the "International Quantum Structures Association". His research centers around the logico-algebraic structures of quantum theory and quantum computation. In 1998 he was awarded the Birkhoff-von Neumann Prize. Roberto Leporini received an MSc degree cum laude in Computer Science in 1999 and a PhD in Computer Science in 2004,  both from the University of Milan. Since 2005 he is an assistant professor at the University of Bergamo. His main research interests are: quantum computing, quantum optics, quantum computational structures and logic. He has published over 40 papers in international journals and holds a patent on the construction of quantum circuits. He is the president of the "International Quantum Structures Association".Giuseppe Sergioli received an MSc degree in Theoretical Physics at the University of Catania and a PhD in Logic and Philosophy of Science at the University of Cagliari, where he is now an assistant professor. His main research interests are: quantum computing, quantum computational structures and quantum computational logics. He is the author of several papers published in prominent journals in the areas of physics, logic, foundations of physics and computer science.

You will savor every word and image in this book as Nicky Haslam takes you on a remarkably personal tour of his folly of an English home which he describes as "quite simply the prettiest small house in the world." Formerly the home of renowned designer John Fowler, Haslam fell in love with its "fairy-tale facade", as Fowler did shortly after the end of WWII. Haslam describes seeing the folly for the first time: "History does repeat itself. And so it was that, some thirty years later, I turned the last bend in the rough lane through these woods, came to a clearing by a lake, and, turning, saw this rose-pink, brick-gabled folly glinting in the evening sun."Haslam recounts, "I like to think of him (Fowler) standing in the doorway as his celebrated clients like Debo Devonshire or the Pembrokes drew up to be greeted by his quizzical smile and promise of a nifty Blood Mary. One of his early assistants, Nina Campbell, told me recently that, even before he came to live here, John's nickname was 'Folly' Fowler...."Situated on the hunting grounds of King Henry VII, the home has a rather magical past before Fowler. It was on these grounds that Catherine of Aragon first set her black Spanish eyes on King Henry's son Arthur, Prince of Wales, to whom she was betrothed. You may sense a certain magic pervading the house, or maybe it's Haslam's unabashed affection for it. In its Tudor beginnings as a refuge from hunting, it was a humble three rooms. Around 1720-40 a fanciful Jacobean facade was affixed to the front, and it was expanded.Describing his first walk-through after Fowler inhabited it, Haslam allows us to see it through his eyes: "There was no furniture inside the house the first time I saw it.... But in each of the tiny rooms - not one is more than 12 feet wide - the walls were beautiful.... Shabby drapes, some edged in fading hand-painted borders, fell forlornly at dusty windows. Le Grand Meaulnes and Miss Havisham had nothing on this sleeping timeless Wunderkammer. And, strange as it seems now, I knew then that I must retain an echo of this delabre atmosphere; it seemed an essential element of the building's magical being."You may feel you are in the midst of an E.M. Forster novel as you read this, complete with iridescent photos by Simon Upton, to accompany the descriptions.Leaving much of the home the way Fowler left it, Haslam brings fresh life and luster to it with his original and fresh style. He says of his style: "It would be hopeless to pretend that my style, at home, is anything but a hodgepodge of the things I love....And the house's soul doesn't seem to object to the hodgepodge." It seems every room and piece in the home has a story, and Haslam is happy to tell them in his colorful and amusing storytelling style. His storytelling matches his decor: charming, lighthearted, insouciant, droll and sentimental.You may find yourself raptly reading every word and studying the pages as Haslam chats about the house and its history, walls, soft furnishings, curtains and drapery, and furniture. Then he takes you on a grand tour of the rooms: the old hall, the staircase hall, the library, the dining room, the kitchen, the flower room, the guest rooms and master bedroom and John Fowler's old bedroom, which, surprisingly was one of the smallest bedrooms in the home.Along the tour, Haslam sprinkles his design admonishments: "Increase the scale of wall coverings in small spaces." And "I never buy anything purely for its monetary value. I like possessions that smile back at me." Then there's: "Edging chintz in a solid color is an essential touch." (This book may make you wonder if it will be the catalyst for reviving the classical appeal of chintz in a major way.)You will get to stroll outside, too, and view the terrace, the conservatory, the lake and the unique Garden Room. You may feel you have stayed for a pleasant weekend as Halsam's guest.This is already one of my favorite of the many decor and design books I own. It should become a classic in design libraries. If you like florals, stripes, painted walls and furniture, tole and hurricane lamps, ruffles, chinoiserie, slipcovers, skirted tables, leaded glass, carved mantels, flagstone, portraits, architectural engravings, busts, books, flowers and rooms that look like they have evolved for 30 years - because these did - you should adore this book. If you enjoy English, cottage or European country styles, you should have this book in your library, or on your ottoman to peruse over and over again. Because you will.

At last, a book on the Hunting Lodge! Nicky Haslam is fun to read and I enjoy his style, but I must say that I bought this book because I was already a fan of the house, from its association with John Fowler. The house has been much photographed, with pictures scattered throughout various books for decades. The rooms are surprisingly small and incredibly pretty.In this new book, it's wonderful to finally see the house layout, how the rooms connect, and to see rooms I had never seen before, such as Fowler's own minuscule bedroom, the pantry, and the bathrooms. And that Mauny wallpaper, wow. Truly spectacular, and I can see why Fowler loved it. There is inspiration here for anyone who loves romantic English style, especially if you have small rooms that don't seem "all that" - anyone can use pretty paint colors and fabrics and look for modest antiques and prints. If it's old, shabby and worn, all the better. If it has personal meaning to you, that's the best.I only wish the old photos from Fowler's time had been included. It would've been nice to have it all together in one book. But that's alright, what's here is fantastic. Thanks, Nicky, for keeping so much of JF's work intact and thank you for putting this book together for us Fowler and Hunting Lodge fans.

If you're obsessed with Colefax & Fowlers' driving forces (Nancy Lancaster & John Fowler) as I am, this is a very interesting book. I can't say admire Haslam's design choices unreservedly as I do Lancaster's or Fowler's. He's just not in their league--but then, who is, really?I appreciated getting detailed information on this very interesting little house that I first admired 30 years ago when I saw a picture of its facade in a garden book. The one thing lacking: a comprehensive picture of the front exterior of the house; Haslam only shows the entrance. (The famous triple-peak facade is actually the back of the house.) So even with all this detail, not seeing the front of the house means it still holds some mystery for me. Maybe that's not altogether a bad thing.

I was not overly impressed with this book. There are many pages that show the "details" of a room such as fireplace surrounds, art work, and wallpaper samples, rather than "full-view" rooms. I do admire Mr. Haslam's style, as he has no constraints when decorating his own home. However, I am apalled at his bathrooms in which he has installed rather ugly wall-to-wall carpeting!! He might be "decorator to the stars", but his design expertise falls extremely short in the bath arena. I would only recommend this book if you are primarily interested in reading about this specific house, the Hunting Lodge (formerly owned by John Fowler).

This book is very nicely done with great photos. The house has been previously written about extensively in magazines and at least two books because the previous owner, as mentioned in the book, was John Fowler. The previous books were one (excellent)on the firm of Colefax and Fowler and the other by Martin Wood was a coffee table size book on John Fowler. For people who have read the other two, this book is a bit of a re-hash. For those who haven't read the other two, a definite read.

I have loved the front facade of John Fowler's home ever since the first time I saw it. It has a story book look. It was good to be able to see more of the place than in previous magazines/books. The grounds are magnificent.I was pleasantly surprised that Haslam was able to preserve the integrity yet give Fowler's old home a new and fresh look. I expected it to have a dated feel but it does not.If you love the old master decorators/designers I recommend this book. It is one you'll want to add to your collection.

Just read this one yesterday, and, as was the case with all of the pieces of his that I've read so far, Mark Horrell painted a rather vivid picture of what trekking through that remote part of the world still is, warts and all. I really enjoy reading his descriptions of the people he encounters, as well as the places, because he tends to not try to gloss over the less-than-pretty aspects of these kinds of trips. Somehow he manages to make all the misery that seems to be inextricably entwined with these treks funny (in an "Angela's Ashes" sort of way) and makes you feel as though you're slogging through the muck right along next to him.

Having done the Gokyo - Cho La last year I really enjoyed Marks comments on his trek and climbs. Planning to return in 2013 to do the Three Passes of Khumbu, so his comments on Renjo La were very helpful. However as an "old" trekker, now 64, I found his condescending comments on the elderly Japanese trekkers distasteful along with his thoughts near Namche Bazar about them tottering along on their walking poles and wondering why they did not do it when they were younger. Perhaps they were too busy making an income to bring up your generation. Mark, I think you should be commending them for attempting their trips instead of relegating them to homes for the aged. But apart from this, it was a great read and highly recommended for anyone thinking of going to the area.

For $1 on Kindle can't go wrong. Good little book on a trek from Lukla to Mera and Island Peaks and then to Goyko and back to Lukla. Well worth the dollar spent.

Gives insights into what it is like to trek the Himalayas and also into the Nepal culture.

The first "book" I read by Mark Horrell confused me a little, more or less dumping the reader into one of Mark's journeys into the high mountains without any real background but after reading two or more of these accounts you will get his style and just plain enjoy his descriptions of some distant destination, often lesser known that most mountaineering adventure spots. I would love to be have been able to live the life he has!

I have come to quite enjoy each of Mark Horrell's travel diaries, not only because of their details of what it's like to participate in a commercial trek or climb, but because of the self-effacing and witty style in which they're written. While I don't always get the British sense of humour, it's evident that some of the trek participants don't either! Entertaining!

Have other M Horrell's books. All are entertaining, earthy language is not off-putting to me...the book has detailed descriptions that helps me understand climbing better. Great photos.

This is the second of Horrell's books that I have read and it was much better that the first, Snowman trek. This one kept me looking forward to reading further. I enjoyed his discriptions of the climbing and of the trek to get to where he eventually summitted the mountain. I do recommend this book.
