I'm in medical school and for some reason everyone said that this book wasn't good. I went ahead and purchased it, and I'm glad I did! The summaries at the end of each chapter are great as are the figures. It's also very easy to read compared to other medical books.

So this is my book for my medical embryology course that I am taking right now, and I am extremely happy that I had an undergrad developmental biology course! It would be a pretty good book (3-4 stars) if it didn't contain an average of 4 mistakes per chapter (seriously). For example, in chapter 3, the secondary follicle is (wrongly) called a preantral follicle in a figure caption. In the text, the primary follicle is called a preantral follicle (which is correct). If you didn't know already, this book would just confuse you. In chapter 5, figure 5-4 will confuse you because figure 5-4b and 5-4c are reversed, both in the figure and in the caption. The effect of this error is a major one, leading you to believe that notochord development happens in a caudal to cranial direction when in fact it occurs in a cranial to caudal direction. In the text, it is stated correctly. Once again, if you don't know any better, you are just going to get confused by this book. Somatic and splanchnic mesoderm are confused by the author, an elementary mistake. Also, the editors must have been overly concerned with keeping the book small because the glossary of key terms doesn't even have definitions for primordial, primary, and secondary follicles, mesentery, and peritoneum. That is horrible for an embryology book and ends up costing you more time looking up definitions that aren't there. The dictionary should be abandoned. Also, even bolded words such as alpha-fetoprotein are left out of the INDEX. Piss-poor for a book in its tenth edition, and the sad thing is, this is supposed to be the best medical embryology text out there. . . .Aside from the obvious lack of effort in editing, this book has several good things about it. Despite being a tiny book, there is a lot of information packed into very dense writing. Some parts do not flow very linearly, which can be confusing. Other areas of embryogenesis are written poorly (e.g. progression of the villi from primary to tertiary, changes in fetal/maternal blood circulation), but you can still manage to get the idea if you spend a little extra time on it. After slowly reading through, and barring any crazy typos, you will have a pretty clear albeit abbreviated picture of medical embryology. Also, The emphasis on clinical correlations is very nice and well written. There are many good figures for the clinical correlations (it is the other figures that are iffy, as described above). The CD that comes with the book is very nice too and is the only thing that makes me give this book 2 stars instead of one for all of the mistakes in the text. It is cartoonish, but it animates VERY clearly what is going on during different embryonic periods of development.All in all, I suspect you'll have to get this book if it is required. Just remember to be cautious of errors, especially in the figures. Maybe by the 11th edition all the kinks will finally get worked out. I doubt it.Note: I abandoned this book for Before We Are Born: Essentials of Embryology and Birth Defects With STUDENT CONSULT Online Access (Before We Are Born: Essentials of Embryology & Birth Defects). I found this book to be almost identical in coverage and better written and edited. Moore, author of Clinically Oriented Anatomy, better correlates embryological structure to adult anatomy, which I think illustrates the clinical importance of embryology and makes it easier to learn.

Conscise compendium of basic knowledge...however, sometimes I feel like there's information missing or that there's a gap somewhere. It's really GREAT information that you must know and it's presented in small manageable chapters to reinforce and add to knowledge already aquired. However, it's not a book you can jump into for new knowledge or the chapter will become a never ending story even if you've forgotten the info or archived it in your brain without retrieval or easy access to that information. That being said. It is exactly what the description promises a review of medical embryology as brief and unrepetitive as possible. Easy to read and easy to refer to and the book is well organized however you would agree to that if you've had several courses in biology and reproduction so that Medical Embryology could seal the deal. Not this book is not for the novice while some might be able to pick it up if they are technically inclined and can sort out advance knowledge without many issues.

As a retired physician, I was feeling fuzzy about my recall of human embryology. I have enjoyed browsing the book, focusing on the things that felt the fuzziest. I found the text and illustrations clear & very helpful for my purpose. And I was gratified to find both how much I had remembered correctly AND how much new information has been added

As soon as my wife got pregnant, the deluge of books started coming in for her. I was shocked at the huggy-feel-good nurture your baby books. All of them have the tone of how to have a baby for dummies. I wanted some real science, unfiltered and without the emotional crap. In my research for a book that would tell me the details of human development I happened on this book.I really liked this book.As a layman it was a good place for me to go back and review all the biology that I learned many years ago. It was also good to know what all the measurements, blood tests, and various poking and prodding all meant. Having some of a science background it was a good overview of the whole process. Knowing the various complications at different parts of the pregnancy was also good to know.If you're squeamish about looking at dead babies with a variety of birth defects you should probably not read this book.

The kindle edition of this book has numerous typos, which is disappointing. I usually prefer the Kindle edition of my textbooks, but I borrowed the paperback from my library, and this is one circumstance that the book is much better. The page setup on the kindle is not ideal, with many of the diagrams being several pages away from their description. Also, there is a very nice and helpful chart in the beginning of the paperback, that is not in a useable format in the kindle edition. I wish I could get a credit for the kindle book and use it to purchase the paperback.

Beyond the chapter headings, the material is very disorganized and hard to follow. Embryology is a very difficult topic to learn as is. I found that this text's "back and forth" flashback style writing made it even worse. The graphics are wonderful, but not attached to the relevant pages....Sometimes the critical points arent even labeled. Waste of money.I quit using the book mid semester and found many other solid resources on medical school course sites (UNSW, Indiana, Duke, Univ Fribourg, McGill)

Donna Leon is the best. I am astonished to have gotten to these Inspector Guido Brunetti so late in a life in which mysteries play a large role; I admit to someone mentioning her ten years ago. Without rival, the best. Each one of these has different strengths and weaknesses. Overall, Brunetti shares his marvelous family (with a wife who teaches Henry James), his cynical co-office workers, his dreary boss, who is concerned about image and personal accomplishment. Before reading Leon, I thought I loved Bosch, Lyncoln Ryme, Alex Cross, and many others. BUt Guido gives us not only his wonderful, cynical, honest and intensely -on the path to truth-Brunetti, but also his Venice, the same magnificent historically present Venice in each book, where we learn a little more about urban issues, challenges, problems and the ways of its residents--against the onslaught of tourist visitors seasonally. You cannot go wrong with any in this series.

All of Donna Leon's Guido Brunetti books rate 5 Stars from me. Guido's sleuthing and resolution of one or more crimes is a recurrent theme that shares the limelight with Guido and Elettra Zorzi's deft handling of Vice Questora Patta and lieutenant . Guido's meandering through the streets introduces one to many of the wonderful Palaces, Churches, hospitals, neighborhoods, that make Venice the world class city we know today and its magnificent history. We are introduced to Murano, Burano, Sant Erasmo and other adjacent islands, as well as Mestre and the mainland north and west of the city. Food!! If one is interested in Italian food, each book describes the fresh food that is brought home to cook, and a number of Italian dishes that Paola prepares. For further exploration of these dishes, Donna Leon's cook book might be just the thing. Add in discussions of local and national politics and the whole is a sumptuous feast for the senses. Thank you Donna!!

As always in Donna Leon's novels, a murder mystery has a Hero in inspector Brunetti, whose humanity contrasts with the corruption that is commonplace in beautiful Venice, but is also intermixed with the good in its beauty and family life. The dark side of the culture where greed and duplicity lurk, result in the chain of events culminating in the murders, which Brunetti and his intrepid and ingenious Secretary are called upon to solve. It is this understanding of complex human emotions, and the society in which he lives, which define Brunetti,s skill. These novels are true to life. Like all true masters they achieve their insights while also captivating the reader in its thrall. This is entertainment of the highest level.

Totally enjoyable 2002 episode in the Brunetti series with ample portions of all that we most love about it: running observations on the city of Venice; frequent dialogue between Brunetti and wife, Paolo; full participation by Signorina Elettra; an intricate plot; inclusion of juicy bits about art treasures; an insightful running account of WWII Italian history; plenty of moral indignation and social commentary about the state of Italian institutions, American eating habits and physical condition and an ending that produces a modicum of justice.In sum, a fine read that will please first timers to the series as well as the stalwarts who haven't missed a single one. One caution: "Willful Behavior" is a 2010 reprint of the 2002 original and is, therefore, not a new book. It may have been published originally in the UK under a different title.

There is nothing wrong with this mystery novel. The characters are clearly drawn, the mystery perfectly adequate, and yet I just couldn't make myself care. I enjoyed the interjection of Italian words and setting. There were the usual typos found in some Kindle books, but that wasn't enough to put me off. I think it boils down to the fact that the book felt like I was watching it unfold from a great distance like a film with great potential and B actors. I wasn't in the midst of events nor in the inner workings and struggles of the characters. Emotional connection was just missing. It has much to recommend it and others might find it compelling and engrossing. You might want to give it a try.

I am a fan of Donna Leon's Commissario Guido Brunetti's police history series of books having read the majority of them thus far. I like the subplots of the life of his familyshe took me around the streets of Venice again and with family and going around the streets of Venice Italy. Willful behavior is a good story. The focus is on Claudia Leonardo and her questionable grandfather's past. I like the way Ms. Leon brings Brunetti's wife Paoloa into the murder mystery. When Paola's young student Claudia is murdered brunettes he investigates its and uncovers shocking details about the grandfathers passed tied to Nazi collaboration during the second world war the very few Italians want to remember. Historically it's an interesting read and will keep you guessing throughout.

Wilful Behavior is among my favorite of Donna Leon's Brunetti series. She has a wonderful way of weaving Italian history and commentary on the very Italian-ness of her characters. In this novel, some of the greed and plunder of the spoils of World War II are at the core of the development of the case. Too, we find out more details of the mysterious past of Paola's father, the count. In each book, the main characters reveal more of themselves. Vianello, for instance, is being fleshed out much more and even Brunetti is impressed as he discovers the sympathetic nature of his favorite. A wonderful story of love, respect, and honor. Five stars from me.

I found this to be one of the better Donna Leon tales in that it was never obvious where we would end up.Characters were well developed with some displaying complexity. To learn about the still lingering nostalgia for the Mussolini days by the veterans was very interesting and worrying. Particularly as the present ultra right wing tendencies in Europe will need to be watched and countered. Leon's descriptions of the layers of Venetian and Italian bureaucracy and self interest are most interesting. Not a good place to live without connections and money.

If I could give this book a thousands stars and then take the author to lunch I would. I cannot tell you what this book offered in terms of emotional relief but I will try. This book was like reading about most of my childhood. I finally at 34 years old had the epiphany that if this book was right then logically there was credible evidence that I was not actually a bad person. I realized at core that I believed I was bad. Truly bad. How can you see anything realistically or find happiness if you are bad at your core ? The felt what I would describe was an opening inside my heart. A space created to allow me to look over things that have happened differently. I feel quiet. For the first time perhaps ever ( while not on drugs ) I am quiet inside. There is no guilt, shame, self loathing, and feeling of pouncing on someone for putting me down. Just quiet. I feel nice. I feel quiet. These last 6 days have been so lovely. I am half way through the book and can't wait to see what it says next. Thank god for this book. I have hated myself for most of my life and tried destroying myself to make the self loathing end for so long. But I'm not bad. I don't know what I am but not being bad is a really nice start. In the sixteen years since, the decreasing stigma for mental health issues as well as ever-expanding media resources have increased the public vocabulary in the area of psychology. There has been additional research on BPD since 2000 with many publications for patients taking a more clinical tone than this book, but considering this book in context, it is a smart, well-written volume for the 2000 audience, utilizing archetypes to illustrate different types of BPD in mothers.Some reviewers claim the archetypes seem a bit harsh, but if the title was "Understanding the Borderline Co-Worker" instead of "Understanding the Borderline Mother," I suspect there would be fewer complaints of that nature. The celebrity examples do seem a bit out of context, both in 2000 and in 2016, and seem a bit exaggerated relative to the other examples of behavior.If you're dealing with, or suspect you're dealing with BPD in your family, the best case scenario is to have a good therapist as your Sherpa as you navigate those waters. At the very least, you'll have an objective voice of reason in your exploration; ideally, your experienced therapist has helped others through all stages of healing and will have insight to expedite your path to health. BPD is heavy stuff, and even if you've dealt with other major issues in therapy in the past, BPD weighs in so much more exponentially.This book will likely validate your childhood experiences that previously did not make sense. There are passages that will help you identify what's missing in your early childhood development and will clarify what you can do as an adult to rectify that lack of early development and move toward a life of love and trust. I would not attempt to use this book as my sole source in healing myself and/or my relationships with those who have BPD, but it will help as a complementary part of education and therapy.The book is NOT meant to nit-pick the parenting of the majority of the population.For those affected by BPD, this book is not "just another excuse to whine," and it's highly insensitive and demonstrates ignorance (or perhaps denial?) of the diagnosis to suggest it is.Ironically, it's the very absence of a lifetime "whining" or even uttering a single complaint for most BPD-traumatized individuals that has ultimately produced the most dysfunction in their own lives. Many have suffered in silence from their abuse, assuming the definition of "love" they were given in childhood required them to accommodate abuse from others. There's no retirement plan for martyrs, and this book will let you know you're not alone if that was your history. I hope it helps and hope there are brighter days full of love ahead for you.

A must-read. I am a 27 year old mental health provider, who works with people with borderline personality disorder, believe it or not. I always thought there was something wrong with my mother growing up, but remained silent because I thought no one would believe me. This book provided the validation I have been seeking all these years. I am completely estranged from my mother, who was definitely emotionally abusive and manipulative, and a little bit physically abusive, which curtailed as I grew older. She is a mixture of the "Witch" and "Queen" types mentioned in the book, and it was so affirming to know why I behaved the way I did, and that a lot of the interventions I used to deal with her behavior made sense. Looking back now, I am so thankful for getting out when I did. I am lucky that I saw everything for what it was. So thankful for this book.

I absolutely love this book. I had a very difficult childhood living with my single, Borderline, alcoholic, and Narcissistic mother. I never knew (or even really thought) that it was so bad until my late teenage years when the effects of what I went through started to become clear. I couldn't really see it while I was still living with her, because I was still in it. It was my reality, it was all I knew, and it was screwed up.I bought this book years ago on here on a whim and it changed everything for me. My mother had mentioned that a doctor told her she needed therapy for her Borderline and I had no idea what that meant. When I got and read this book it transformed my brain and understanding of Borderline. I was a budding Psychology student at the time, and I was also just getting into the process of healing years of trauma. Because of this book I understand why I have so many of the issues I do, I understand my mother and why she had the issues she did (without the need to feel sorry for her--I simply just understand it), and I feel so much less crazy. I still have a long way to go but this book was, and still is, key in my recovery and development of my own identity, separate from my mothers. I recommend it for anyone and everyone who grew up with a Borderline mother.

I have read it five times, it changed my life and empowered me to remove my borderline magnet. Being an old sci-fi buff going back to the 1960s, plus having a rudimentary education in physics, I've read tons of books about time travel. Everything from Isaac Asimov and George Gamow in the 60's to Michio Kaku and Stephen Hawking in the 2000s. Time travel has become as much a staple of speculation as space aliens. The question is whether Brian Clegg's HOW TO BUILD A TIME MACHINE adds anything to the discussion, or is it just a smarmy rehash of time-worn (no pun intended) theories.The answer is, "Yes, it does indeed significantly add to the discussion of time travel theory." Despite a lifetime of reading about relativity and quantum mechanics I gleaned some interesting insights that made this book well worth the read:1. Clegg explains how the discussion about the nature of time has a long history, starting with Plato, then going through St. Augustine and Galileo, and then on down to contemporary physicists. Most of the ideas that modern physicists argue about, such as whether time is a dimension or merely a measure of change, whether the past is immutable, or whether human beings have free will so as to affect unfolding events, have been debated for centuries from the scientific, philosophical, and theological angles.2. He then opens a most entertaining window into the personalities who gave such great drama to the "golden age of physics" encompassing Einstein's Theory of Relativity and Niels Bohr's discoveries of Quantum Mechanics. Einstein was a physicist who craved order. He thought that in his Theory of Relativity he had found the beautifully designed blueprint of the universe. Then along comes the Quantum Mechanics crowd with their ideas that subatomic particles are merely probabilities that have no reality until they are measured, of particles spontaneously dematerializing and rematerializing, and of "quantum entanglement" whereby particles on the opposite sides of the universe may "communicate" with each other instantaneously when one of them is measured. Clegg explains how Einstein rebelled with his whole intellect at this theory of quantum disorder.3. Clegg then explains how the most bizarre effects of Quantum Physics appear in everyday life, such as when a beam of light hits a plane of glass and each photon must "decide" whether to pass through the glass or be reflected back as a mirror image. Because of quantum entanglement the photons appear to "know" the thickness of the glass before they actually pass through it, and, after determining the thickness of the glass, a certain percentage of the photons "decide" to bounce off the front end of the pane.4. He also gives interesting biographical sketches of the leading minds of physics including Einstein, Niels Bohr, Max Planck, and Nicola Tesla, who seems to have become insane after his experiments with powerful electromagnetic waves deranged his brain. There are also the discoveries of the less well-known people like Alain Aspect who devised an ingenious experiment to prove beyond doubt the effects of quantum mechanics. I was also introduced to the work of Ronald Mallett, who seems to be on the current frontier of work in trying to accomplish time travel by warping space through rapid rotation.So, is time travel possible --- the "fun kind" that is, when you could go back in time and mess around with the past or wing your way into the future to read the winning lottery numbers then come back to the present and place the winning bet? Conventional wisdom, of course, is that this kind of time travel that upsets causality is not allowable in Einstein's Relativistic universe. The architecture of Einstein's Spacetime sets a minimum and maximum speed for the passage of time (time passes at maximum speed when an object is at rest but slows to a crawl when an object is accelerated to nearlight speed) but time can't flow backward.However, the random nature of Quantum Mechanics opens up a whole 'nother can of worms. Clegg explains that we now know that photons and certain other particles most certainly do travel faster than light. It happens all the time. Photons can dematerialize and rematerialize on the other side of an impenetrable barrier, thus traversing gaps in physical space in zero time. Clegg gives the stunning example of how a Professor Gunter Nimtz has made a recording of Mozart's Fortieth Symphony, the recording consisting entirely of microwaved photons that have gapped through space, dematerializing before encountering an impenetrable barrier and rematerializing on the other side.Is it possible, then, to harness Quantum Mechanics so as to dematerialize an object and rematerialize it instantaneously at a different location, thereby by-passing Spacetime, like Star Trek's transporter beam? Is it possible to use quantum entanglement to transmit information instantaneously between distant objects? Is it possible to use engineering on a stellar scale to create Spacetime-warping "wormholes" that would allow us to jump from any point in Spacetime to any other point, going backward or forward to any desired point in the four dimensions of space and time?Clegg takes us tantalizingly close to the answer we want to hear, which is "Yes, we WILL be able to discover a way to run around in the past and the future, then come back to the present." Alas, we only come CLOSE to being able to do this. The very randomness that goes to the heart of Quantum Mechanics in the end defeats any attempt to apply it in a predictable way to go from point "X,Y,Z,T" ("t" representing time) to point "X1,Y1,Z1,T1."What Clegg does leave us with is evidence that the bizarre nature of Quantum Mechanics surrounds us. He explains how we see evidence of it in every day occurrences such as the double-image in a window pane when photons "decide" whether to be reflected from the glass or to pass through it. Alas, we don't have a way of harnessing the random nature of Quantum Mechanics to make it do the useful work of travelling through space and time (the analogy of perpetual motion machines comes to mind) but its effects are nonetheless logic-defying. It's a great read even if you've already read everybody else's take on the subject.

Compared to Paul Davies' book, this book is slightly worse. Both books introduce an essentially scientific view of time travel, and in that respect is easily imitated, and not entirely without merit. I found the content, because of the scientific view, somewhat boring and familiar.

Good fast read...no ground breaking material here though, just a consolidated arrangement of work by many astro and theoretical physicist leaders throughout history presented in language the average person can understand.

Brian Cl egg knows how to explain hard Science. I have read all of his books. A must read for all those interested in these subjects.

This is good reading for people who have a casual interest in particle physics, quantum theory and Einstein's general and special theories of relativity as they pertain to the possibilities for time travel and messaging through time. It is very well written and in understandable language. It reflects the current state of real science as pertaining to time travel. It is an excellent book for anyone that is curious about time travel and for those who are also curious about UFOs and alien encounters.

This is a really truly unique set of oracle cards. It's so much different that any tarot-style or animal spirit or angel cards I've ever used. I'm so glad the creators of this manual/deck have made this!!! It really has helped me with some more SOUL-THEMED questions. Those are the hardest to answer. The guidebook tells you how to ask certain questions and how to ask your own questions. The cards CANNOT be used without the guidebook. The guidebook is a gem, too! Thumb through it thoroughly to understand how it is organized. It even has a suggested list of books to read.I very highly recommend this set, especially if you've outgrown typical tarot/oracle cards and runes.Note: I also suggest The Way of the Tarot: The Spiritual Teacher in the Cards by Jordorowsky. You'll have to purchase separately the cards, Tarot de Marseille. Like this set, the cards and the book must go together. I also really like The Book of Runes and viking runes by Ralph Blum. His book is a really good one.

A fantastic desk. Very original - like nothing else you've probably used. The mythology and cosmology are totally refreshing. Very fun to work with and the book is VERY well done with both lengthy (and brief, when you need them) descriptions.

Cards and artwork are beautiful. Book gives wonderful interpretation of each card.

This set still rates 5 stars, both for content and beauty, even though the newer sets that are now shipping no longer have a hardcover book. The book is now softcover, and, disappointingly, omits the handy reference charts that are in the front and back of the hardcover.The cards are *almost* the same in this newer edition. In the older sets, they are a little more vibrant, and the finish is a high gloss, while the newer ones have more of a matte finish.I prefer the packaging of the older set: the book slides out of the side, and a carboard container next to it slides out, and neatly held in that are the cards. The packaging of the new set is not bad, but you do have to slide the cover off; then the book sits on top of a carboard section with a cut-out center for the cards.In short, I would suggest trying to find an older set with the hardcover book, and superior packaging; but the new set is still, overall, quite lovely, and the content is undeniably wonderful. A wise and beautiful oracle.
