It will take you from a moderate to intermediate Vim user to a fluent Vim user if you follow its guidance and practice.However, it is unlikely that an advanced Vim user will find anything surprising in here. I keep this around for introducing others to vim or helping existing vim-ers gain skill; I rarely need it myself. It's got a target audience, and it's exquisitely tailored to them.

The narrative of Practical Vim creates in form an antithesis of what would be expected if one typed "man -k whatever" in XNIX. A hands-on practical experience using VIM is the result. This is contrast to the vague impressions often offered as tutorials in the open source world. It's a useful resource in and of itself. If you don't know how to touch type, you better learn how to do that. That is not to say that you shouldn't get this book, touch typing is a skill that you can learn.I didn't know about the dot command until I picked up this book. The author provides clear examples, and provides the best way to tackle an operation in Vim while also explaining why other methods would be inefficient i.e. would require more key presses, or can not be repeated using the dot command to the same effect.I learnt a proper way to avoid reaching for the key everytime, and how to quickly navigate through my buffer list.Make sure to download the example files that the book references in the examples as that will make it easier to follow the commands.Loved it!!

This is a great and necessary book for anyone who wants to use VIM for serious programming.I have used Vim for a while, but only for very basic editing. When I started programming in Python, I used Pycharm as an IDE. However, once you get more sophisticated, such GUI based IDEs suddenly become quite restrictive and even error prone. So a year later I remembered my old friend Vim, but after following the only manuals on how to set up a proper Python environment, I still missed a lot of Pycharm's features.Enter Practical Vim. This book is gold form page 1 onwards. Even the little hint to actually read the forgotten manual was a big plus. And then it got better... highly recommended for anyone who is serious about working in Vim.

The author has a mastery of Vim that is inspiring and the "practical" part of the book is literally that. Incredibly helpful with many, many solutions to minimizing keystrokes and using Vim in a very powerful way to become more productive. I've only gone through half the book so far and I can already manipulate text more quickly and more powerfully than when I use Visual Studio with Whole Tomato. Highly recommend.

I've been a vim user on and off for the past 15 years and started using it heavily again about three years ago. I've always loved finding little tricks on the web to make my vim use more efficient. This book is nicely broken into 100+ such tips that give you very efficient methods of accomplishing everyday common tasks. I guarantee any level of vim user will gain something useful from this book. The past few months I have been going through a tip or two everyday, setting aside 10 minutes or so to practice what I just learned then trying to consciously use the new methods through out the day. My vim speed and intuition have been increasing almost daily which obviously has a nice impact on my daily work. Highly recommend this book to any vim user, whether you just completed vimtutor for the very first time or have been a vim user for years.

MESTENHAUSER has published more than 80 books, monographs, documents, articles, and chapters on numerous issues relating to international and global education. |e He is a three-time holder of senior Fulbright grants in the Philippines, Japan, and Czechoslovakia. Mestenhauser was president of NAFSA: Association of International Educators and the International Society of Educational, Cultural and Scientific Interchanges (ISECSI). His honors include the Marita Houlihan Award for Excellence in International Education. He is currently a professor in the Educational Policy and Administration Department and is the coordinator of international education programs for the College of Education and Human Development at the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities. Mestenhauser holds a doctorate from Charles University in Prague and a doctorate from the University of Minnesota.BRENDA J. ELLINGBOE completed her Ph.D. degree in Educational Policy and Administration from the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities. This updated version gives a lot more information about the newest smart phones, tablets, and applications available now. Even though I have used a desktop computer for years, I took the time to read through this section from the very beginning, and learned quite a bit, especially about what to look and ask for when purchasing a new computer. The author writes very simply and clearly about each step to using electronic devices, and explains what the many everyday abbreviations stand for. I first borrowed this book from the library, and was so impressed with it that I purchased an updated copy for myself. I feel it is well worth the price for anyone who is new to computers, smart phones or tablets, or simply wants to better understand how they function.

This book explains everything in the tech world simply, easily, and it's not too fat with good size print and wide margins. I got this for my mom, but I've found it useful as well. It explains everything with the "for dummies" detail of clarity without calling you a dummy :)Useful for learning how to use your computer, as well as the various applications, and programs. It talks about the security, service providers, Mac vs. PCs, the internet, email, social media, troubleshooting, Tablets vs. smart phones vs. computers, hardware, software, and even shopping online. It covers just about EVERYTHING. I recommend reading the whole thing, but it can be used as a simple reference; still, get familiar with the book because, especially for very new beginners, you may not know where to find the answers you want if you aren't familiar with all the parts.

Absolutely clear in her explanations. Solid recommendation from a semi-geek (I know enough to get into PC Purgatory but not enough to find my way out!) She answers all the questions I am to embarrassed to ask about since I think I should know the answers.

A great book not just for a novice, as the author modestly claims, but for anyone at any age who has a modest or even a good functionl knowledge of working with electronic devices like desktops, laptops, smart phones and tablets. The scope of the book is exceptionally comprehensive. The book deals with all devices in major use and explains them in a great lively style. My only suggestion is to reduce some small talk and focus on the useful stuff. But that may reduce the book's readability. A great book to have for all who use modern electronic computing devices but have no time and do not need to master all the secrets of each device. A book with great practical utility.

Wow! THE perfect companion book to Marie Clapsaddle's "Become A Tech-Smart Senior." For a friend or family member of any age who was leery about getting on line, I'd team up Marie's book (which I just purchased/read), this terrific tome plus a tablet - grand slam of introducing basic benefits, followed by core features & how-tos (written in remarkably clear, illuminating, non-scary language - bravo, Abby!) with the simplest-to-master hardware (FYI - Abby's book covers a wide range of devices). Gotta get a copy of this book for our local senior residence!

When looking for instruction on how to scan, download, save, store and retrieve it was a challenge. Impatient I ordered another book to get the answers. More concise directions would have been nice. Overall the book was helpful but lacked direct 1-2-3 directions.

Have paged through, and assured myself that the content will be useful to me many times. It's the perfect book for an elderly female of average intelligence and small knowledge of modern technology. I'm glad I got it.

how to use this computer better. Before I was going over to the Micro Center (Computer Repair Place) to find out what I had did wrong. Each visit cost me near $100.00. Now I will be able to look up some things on my own. I was jilted out of $400.00 two years ago, because some Internet scam person pretended to be the Computer Tech and messed up my computer over the phone. I have learned from this. Love this book, but the letter size is a bit small, especially under images, for reading. I would give 5 stars if the letter size would have been bigger.

very overpriced & some info is out-of-date

I find this to be a very thorough book on using silver gelatin/liquid emulsions. It covers everything from coating papers, fabrics, or other materials for photo printing, as well as making glass negatives. There is also info on various toning methods, a troubleshooting section, and a formulary with recipes for everything from developers, fixers, stop baths, and toners. It also tells you how to make your own emulsions if you prefer that over buying ready-made emulsions.There are also a lot of nice images of creative applications in the book to help inspire you.
