I like this book because it is Chicago Bears related and has parts that are written by Steve McMichael. That being said, this seemed to be a cash grab. McMichael's part didn't start until almost halfway through the book. Most of the stories are short and some fall short of making sense or even completing the story. Chapters are named but the stories don't always have to do with the title. It's very uneven and a lot of the stories can be found in other Chicago Bears books. All that but I still like it because it's one of my favorite subjects. Go Bears!

If you're a Bears fan, or buying a gift for someone who is, you could hardly do better than choosing this book. There are some great, funny stories in it; things that even I didn't know, and I'm a diehard fan since the early 70's. The stories about contract negotiations between George Halas and Ed O'Bradovich were hilarious! The thing I like best about this book is that it brings some of the players from bygone eras to life for younger fans. It is nice to know that oldtimers like Ed Sprinkle and Bulldog Turner will be remembered for a long time to come, and that they will be appreciated by Bears fans. MicMichael's stuff, like Mcmichael himself, is pretty hilarious. A Bears fan most likely will have a hard time putting this book down.

McMichael's book seems to be an honest assessment of his NFL experience. His shortcomings with the Patriots contributed to his successes with the Chicago Bears.One of the strengths of McMichael's account illustrates the challenges that the current NFL faces to alter the physical tole on players. Pride and drive, testosterone and tenacity drive many men to exceed the limitations. It's one of the things that makes the NFL so great; it's also one of the things that costs so many so dearly after their playing days are done.I enjoyed the book even though I'm sure I wouldn't have enjoyed being one of the people McMichael victimized. He was brash and a bully. He was loyal and consistent. The man was not a saint but he was a great football player.Note: The vocabulary and some of the lifestyle choices the author illustrates would not make this the book most football fans would want to give their children or grandmothers..

Not amazing stories from the sidelines but amusing remembrances. Is Todd Sauerbrun being a jerk an amazing story? Is Steve McMichael saving the post-game beers instead of his car from harm amazing? If you love the Bears you may enjoy some of the stories. I was under the impression that the book would be dealing with in-game decisions, locker room halftime speeches, and such; you know, “amazing stories from the sidelines “

3.5 starsRobert Kirkman continues his foray into post-apocalyptic worlds, but this one is different because the disaster struck part of Philadelphia but left the rest of the world intact. Those living in the Oblivion worry about shelter, food and safety, while those in modern American society continue on with their Starbucks, commutes, and jobs. Kirkman continues to comment on 21st century life here, particularly as we learn that some of those in the Oblivion don't want to leave.Nathan is the protagonist. He is a scientists/adventurer who continues to go back into the Oblivion long after the government has given up on it. It causes a huge strain on his romantic relationship. We learn early on that he is relentlessly searching for his brother Ed, whom has been gone the whole 10 years.The book begins in medias res, so it takes a little bit to figure out what is going on.

It's worth a read because of the well-developed plot, creative story and interesting characters. Stylized, funky art and colors made the Oblivion world side of the tale hard for me to follow at times. But, it's a big artistic challenge to create an alien world that is still recognizable. That being typed, De Felici and Leoni are pretty good story-tellers. An even bigger challenge looms, however: listening to a song in a volume-free medium. Maybe Kirkman will surprise us with a black plastic 45 rpm inserted into a future volume. As to where to find a record player, well....

Slow start with some cliche hooks at the end. Art style isn’t my favorite as a lot of the characters look the same and the panel flow can be confusing at times.

Kirkman continues to capture my attention after Walking Dead. If you're into Sci fi this is for you.

Great atart to a new Robert kirkman series you know its going to get crazy and i cant wait.

Why are they forcing me to write more words? I've said enough. Like I said: I like it, that's all.

Good pacing. Can’t wait to see what happens next.

I ripped through this chapter in no time at all. Just couldn't put it down. Great story. Can't wait for Chapter Two to drop!

I'm vacillating on rating this book. In some ways it is excellent. I have the whisper-synced version, and I've listened to most of the book and read only a small part of it. Hitchens' delivery in the audiobook is only fair. He should have slowed down, especially for his American audience. Hitchens brought home the ruthless character of the Bolshevics and the regimes that followed and powerfully open my eyes to the true nature of communist atheism. The cruelty of the Soviets, especially their hatred of Christianity and Judaism is stunning. Hitchens' portrait of this evil, socialist state religion is shocking and makes me wonder why some still admire the Soviets. Why some think socialism is good is bewildering.Hitchens remarked, "We have to wonder if some sentimental belief that socialism might have succeeded under other leadership still lingers in my brother’s mind. Trotskyism is, at bottom, the self-delusion that it could all have turned out otherwise under a more intelligent, literate leader. There is no actual evidence for this at all—and plenty to the contrary. It is pure wish-fulfillment. I say this as a former Trotskyist, who managed to delude himself in this way for some years.4 It is a mechanism for avoiding the unwanted truth that socialism failed not because it was badly led or unlucky, but because it was wrong. I read this a few years ago, and have recently been thinking back about this book. So that says something about the message of the book, that it does have a bit of timeless truth to the message: A society without God is a society void of compassion and relationship. While this book is somewhat of an apologetic argument for God, it also is not. The book itself does not settle the answer of if there is a god or not. What he does seem to argue is that a society that is completely secular, and has tried to suppress religion in all it's forms to openly endorse an atheistic worldview ruins societies. Peter uses his experience living in Soviet Russia and recollects much of his thoughts and memories of living there and interacting with the people there. One thing that stood out to me in his argument is that with God removed from society, he noticed even the absence of what we all think of as common courtesy, i.e. holding the door for a stranger, smiling and saying hello, offering some gesture of friendliness to others. While I do not agree with everything Hitchens believes, I definitely agree with the core message of this book. It also is important that he is the brother of the late Christopher Hitchens. It shows that people with the same upbringing, can have their own life experiences and come to very different conclusions about the meaning of life. I enjoyed their recorded debates with each other. Both men are very gifted in their own way.

I'd like to see a new title on this book. Because "Rage Against God" suggests something contentious and judgmental, filled with arguments that can never be won. But this book is nothing like that. It is congenial and engaging, filled with nostalgia, reflection, and concern for civilization.Hitchens first draws us into his boyhood years in post WWII Britain. The landscape was filled with relics of the war that he did not understand. Austerity after the war was even greater than during the war. An unspoken demoralization descended upon the people, and gradually the old ways and traditional institutions were replaced with new ideologies. The stuffy liturgies he endured as a choir boy were replaced by streamlined services and a social justice gospel. Much of this he would not discover until he returned to England after many years abroad.Hitchens left England as a young man, freed from the sobrieties of Christian faith and traditional British schooling to pursue fulfillment and success as a journalist. At this point the book widens to paint vivid images of the coarse and grey society he encountered in Moscow, and the even more brutal and harsh humanity he experienced in Mogadishu. He began to see that societies stripped of the sacred turn sterile, mean and totalitarian. Why, he asks, since we see this pattern in nations from the French revolution to Fidel Castro's popular revolution, why do we imagine our "Rage Against God" and traditional institutions will liberate us and transform society to a pure World Order?Hitchens plants this question in the reader's mind without providing an answer beyond his own personal experience. The question provides a frame of reference for our own consideration of life, both personal and political. Hitchens' concern is urgent that we awaken to the gifts of our heritage, that we return to the Virtues and their sources, and that we conserve a civilization that is Liberal, creative, self reliant and heroic.

If you enjoy reading the experiences of those that have traveled the South Pacific, this one is great! Mr. Vila gives a great account of his time spent in and around Micronesia. In my opinion, he did everything right. He was respectful and empathic towards the people and their customs. He didn't have any derogative remarks about the indigenous people and went out of his way to learn and accept their languages and cultures. Mr. Vila's book is right up there with one of my favorite authors, J. Maarten Troost. The only negative is that he only wrote one book on this subject! Time for another trip, Mr. Vila! I want to hear more from you, please!

Other than being able to point to it on a map, I knew almost nothing about Micronesia when I started this book, and I enjoyed learning about the culture there, as well as the specific challenges that came with doing police work in a foreign country. The police work added an additional interesting aspect that you don’t find in most travelogues. Some of Bryan’s stories are hilarious, some are suspenseful, and some are touching. I had a hard time putting this book down!Bryan has a great attitude and the conversational style of this book was a delight to read. It is also worth mentioning that Bryan is nothing but respectful for the local cultures he worked with. Everyone traveling, living, and working in foreign countries should aspire to “build bridges that go both ways”.I really hope that there might be another volume of stories someday...

I read this book when I was visiting Chuuk and Pohnpei and found it to be a perfect compliment to my visit. I was even able to meet one the book's characters Bill (and his family) when we stayed at the Truk Stop in Chuuk. My only critique of the book is that it might have been good to use pseudonyms for the characters because they are real people and you wouldn't want any harm to ever come to them.

As a former resident of Micronesia, I found Bryan's work a very accurate and entertaining chronicle of his experiences there. For me, it was like a trip back in time, renewing my own memories of those beautiful islands and the wonderful people that live there. I recommend Micronesian Blues to any reader that appreciates adventure mixed with humor in an exotic environment. Very, very good read.

Some 30 plus years later many of the characters are still around in Pohnpei. It was also interesting to read the perspective of someone so involved in early law enforcement, knowing what issues persist in the different states and countries. It was an easy enjoyable read, but might not be so interesting if you haven't spent time here.

What a well written book. You see the hardship these islanders but up with. The book makes you laugh and cry. Bryan hit so many points of the real problems of dealing with such multi cultural islands. Well done and very good reading for all. Been there saw it! Shame on the world for what has been done to the islands.

I read this book for a "post-conflict" college course and I was pleasantly surprised that I enjoyed reading it. It was a very easy and smooth read that kept me interested in the Bryan's learned lessons about developing a diverse country's police force. Even beyond the educational aspect of the book, I would suggest this book to anyone interested in an adventure book.

I enjoyed this book for its simple stories and well written narrative. Not a book that you can't put down but one full of great mini stories that are east to read. I loved hearing about the various culture shocks of working abroad.

I know exactly how screwed up my own internal landscape is, and I even know how it got that way. Therefore, when I form an opinion on the real world I force myself to go and seek alternatives, to verify every fact, and to always seek the greater context those facts live within. Context is everything.“Crisis of Character” by Gary J. Byrne is an exceptional book. It is one man’s version of reality and it never pretends to be anything else. The constant search of the writer is in his seeking to define the moral context of everything he experiences. He does not expect perfection. He does expect accountability.The “Introduction” opens with some background describing how and why he decided to write this book. In the first chapter he immediately jumps to a telling event that happened on a typical day of his tenure as a Secret Service Uniformed Division (SSUD) officer trusted with the last line of defense of the First Family and the White House itself. The chapter goes deeper into his background, chronicling how his father’s influence and his childhood travels formed his internalized value system. There are multiple anecdotes from his time as an enlisted member of the Air Force Security Police (AFSP). These stories are both personally revealing and very solid examples of the many diverse situations the AFSP finds itself in. This is a real-life account of one man’s service as an elite member of an elite fighting group.Chapter 3 begins the main portion of the book. This is the story of his career with the SSUD which opens with his powerful memories of beginning his career protecting President G. H. W. Bush and the Bush family during the tenure of our 41st President. Life under the Clintons begins in Chapter 5 and carries on for about the next third of the book. One of the most interesting aspects of this story for me was how hard he worked to protect both the reputation of the Clintons and the security of the White House. As the story unfolds it becomes clear that during this period of time his attitude was much different than it is now. Events surrounding Monica Lewinsky, the ill-fated relief mission to Somalia, and the dramatic shift in priorities between the Bush administration and the Clinton administration challenged his assumptions about American life, American politics, and the values he learned from his father. It was only after he grew trapped between his own internalized moral code, the requirements of his job, and the complete lack of a moral code displayed by the Clintons that he finally sought to be transferred out of the White House. A good man driven to despair by the morally bankrupt couple chosen to lead the free world.Chapter 14 begins his retelling of the fallout from the Ken Starr investigation into the activities of Bill and Hillary Clinton. This portion of the book struggles very hard to come to grips with how the Clintons managed to manipulate the media, the legal system, their inner cadre of loyalists, and the American people, into believing they were something other than criminals who failed in their responsibility to live up to the expectations of the American people. There is a great deal of information here about how the Clintons managed time and time again to avoid the consequences of their own corrupt and perverse behaviors. I found this portion of his story both genuinely heartbreaking and deeply infuriating. For the past three years my faith in our political process has been fighting to stay alive. Sadly, Gary Byrne’s retelling of the Clinton impeachment proceedings has destroyed any small spark of faith I had remaining in our system. Clearly we have become a failed state. All that is left is for the right crisis to push us into a brutal, bloody, implosive collapse.Chapter 16 begins the next phase in his life. Now he is working as an instructor, teaching advanced tactical training to federal agents from multiple law enforcement agencies as well as state and county agencies who contract with James J. Rowley Training Center (JJRTC). There are a couple of small anecdotes about his life as both an instructor and an in-rotation SSUD officer who still must from time to time serve protection details. Then 9/11 happens and his world turns upside down once again. As the SSUD is reorganized from top to bottom and political will surpasses policing as their core structure, he moves into the Federal Air Marshal Service (FAMS) hoping that here he will have the tools and opportunities to genuinely help people and make a real difference in the world. Unfortunately, just before he makes the jump, the FAMS also falls victim to post 9/11 reorganization and even here, politics surpasses mission as the core foundation for policy creation and implementation. Nonetheless, the greater salary and the occasional victory are enough to keep him going until he retires.The book closes with one last dire warning about the consequences of putting the Clintons back into the White House. His firsthand experience with the Clintons multiple and massive failures both within federal administrations and under Hillary Clinton’s service as Senator and Secretary of State have given Gary J. Byrne a unique and deeply moving perspective on how political power functions in the United States of America. Honestly, there is a great deal to be learned by reading, “Crisis of Character”. There are lessons here that are relevant to Hillary Clinton’s unsuitability for the role of President, and there are lessons here for each of us individually in understanding the consequences that result from making decisions based on pure emotion, on poor comprehension of the situation we find ourselves in, and on trusting others to do our thinking for us.A powerful book that needs to be read by everyone who supports Hillary Clinton, but won’t be, because none of them want to see beyond the false front she has convinced them is real. We Americans can no longer trust our freedom and our financial well-being (or for that matter, survival) to those who supposedly swear to be our voice. Unfortunately we must remain skeptical and diligent of everything. We must become and remain aware.Because of your book, I know that I will now be watching and sorting through all the BS and noise and educating myself on the issues and behaviors of those who are supposedly working for the common good of all. I will take a stand because each day's events, large or small are writing a history that I, my children, and grandchildren will have to overcome in the future. Without knowledge and understanding we can't prepare, much less teach our loved ones to see past the noise. We simply cannot trust on our Government to do the right thing as long as there is potential for personal gain.My lesson here is not to be paranoid but to be informed. You have opened my eyes and I thank you.

Great book. She really is a nasty person. They are both severely lacking in the morals, ethics, character and truth departments. Always interesting to get the perspective of a secret service agent. The Clintons were lucky to be surrounded by dedicated agents willing to give up their lives, despite the way they were treated and what they were subjected to covering up. Gary Byrne earned every penny this book brings him. Shame on the Clintons. They are a disgrace.

While it is true that the book covers his whole life, and the Clintons were just a small part of it, I found the entire book riveting. I couldn't put it down and read it in a matter of days. I also disagree with the reviewers who said there was nothing new in it. I never would have imagined Hillary Clinton was as hateful as she was, and the things people on her detail had to do to deal with her temper -- I felt sorry for them, and knowing that they are still following her and always will, I will always feel sorry for the people working beneath her.This book is a worthwhile read. If you want a Clinton scoop from cover to cover, you'll be disappointed, but if you are open to read a man's fascinating life-story, you will enjoy it. I agree with another reviewer who said the low ratings were people who want to vote for Clinton. Honestly, I don't think either candidate we have to choose from has the right temperament for the Presidency, but we got stuck with the choice that we got.In terms of the book itself, it was well done, a riveting page-turner throughout his entire life story.
