I read this book as a student in the Master's of Science in Fraud and Forensics program at Carlow University [...]. This book is well written and extremely interesting. The stories of the 250 exonerees and their cases are gripping and chilling. I liked Garrett's use of the case studies to better explain how problems such as forced confessions, contaminated evidence, inadequate legal representation and flawed judicial reviews lend themselves to wrongful convictions. The horrifying realization that our trusted judicial system made such egregious errors is unnerving and is a must read for all students of law enforcement. The book is very detailed and is a fitting argument for the case of reforming legal procedures and requiring the use of scientific evidence.The only flaw with this book is that although the case studies are helpful in understanding the material presented and give the reader a true human element to the statistical data and law jargon, they begin to get confusing as they are referenced repeatedly throughout the book. However, it doesn't significantly impact the readability of the book and the case studies are more helpful than hindering. Garrett's attention to detail has made this book void of any serious flaws.This book will be extremely helpful in my future career in fraud. It has taught me that no matter how clear the answer to any investigation appears it remains truly unproven until scientific evidence or a scientific methodology is used. Garrett presents us with the stories of people who did time for crimes they didn't commit (on average 13 years!) because someone felt that they were clearly the guilty party. However, scientific evidence proved 250 times over just how wrong assumptions such as "clear guilt" can be. I believe this can be applied to all situations in life and should be a foundation of belief for all individuals in law enforcement.

First, it will make you incensed at the reckless conduct of govt officials, and so will inspire you to continue to give it your best shot every day. Second, it will give you grist for the cross-examination mill as you prepare your cases for trial, because you will have conveniently at hand examples of how investigators and prosecutors have improperly fulfilled their duties in various common situations. Third, it will let you know that there have been substantial financial awards against the govt for improper conduct in wrongful conviction cases, and so it will let you know there are financial rewards for those willing to serve as "private atty general" in the right matters.The book is well-written, succinct, and not hortatory.I am delivering a copy of the book to some of my local friends in the criminal bar and I expect they will be intrigued.Finally, it is possible, but not likely, that as this book gains traction, at some times, in a few places, in a portion of cases, some govt officials will feel guilty about their misconduct, perhaps particularly because of the harsh glare of publicity, and so they will clean up their act. In this book, Professor Garrett has studied trial transcripts of 250 wrongfully convicted people to unfold "what has gone wrong" with the current criminal justice system in the US.According to him, there are serious systemic failures in criminal prosecutions that cause wrongful conviction. It is also difficult for convicts to claim their innocence under the lengthy appeals and habeas proceedings:-1. Innocent people can be involuntarily succumbed to undue police pressure and deceptive interrogation techniques (Reid technique, "Mutt and Jeff", "False Evidence" "Good Cop, Bad Cop" techniques) (P.22) to make "coerced-complaint" confessions to crime they did not commit during interrogations (P.18). Besides, police can feed details of crimes to innocent people in which confession statements are constructed as if innocent people volunteered a litany of details about the crimes like true culprits could have known. Although the US Constitution regulates confession statements via two key principles: the "Miranda" warnings (protections to shield suspects from coercion) and the requirement of voluntariness (P.36), judges always believes that confessions that corroborated by detailed facts are apparently reliable and voluntary.2. Even though innocent people are reluctant to make confessions to crime they did not commit during interrogations, they can become convicts due to other corrupted evidence, including eyewitness misidentifications, flawed forensics, and trial by liar. The police can misdirect witnesses to pick out of innocent people during "suggestive" or "prompting" identification procedures (live lineup, mug shots, witness book, composite image (P.52). Eyewitness memory can be fallible and those multiple procedures have reinforced false identifications. Judges rarely suppress eyewitness identifications and the five-factor "Mason test" and other eyewitness reliability tests are deeply flawed (false confidence, discrepancies in descriptions, opportunity to view, degree of attention, the passage of time, cross-racial identifications, child witnesses).The practice of forensic science (serology, microscopic hair comparison, bite mark comparison, shoe print comparison, voice comparison) (P.94, P.95, P.102, P.105) is pervasively flawed and unreliable to solve any crime, according to Professor Garret. The presentation of forensic evidence can be entirely one-sided because forensic analysts testify for the prosecutors (DNA testing, Fingerprint comparison) (P.100, P.107). There are also malpractices in crime laboratories which lead to testing procedures in an invalid way. Moreover, prosecutors usually use jailhouse informants (P.123), (P.139), and codefendants (P.141) in order to plug all of the holes in criminal cases (jack-of-all-trades). Those informants can lie in the face of "stick-and-carrot" techniques used by prosecutors (P.130).3. During trial, Innocent people from lower class always fail to afford talented attorneys and expert witnesses to assert their innocence. (P.149, P.163, P.165). They cannot present a strong defense and make access to substantial investigative resources in contrast to prosecutors. There are cases that prosecutors and polices have concealed evidence that can help the defense case.Between Chapter 7 and 8, Professor Garret has criticized appeals and habeas proceedings to be lengthy and unfair. A wrongfully convicted person served 14 years in prison between his trial and his exoneration (P.180). Some of the innocents have spent a long time (3 years for Frank Lee Smith who finally died of cancer before DNA testing completion) to apply for a DNA testing protest their innocence (P.214). Moreover, the appellate and post-conviction procedures do not effectively look at factual instead of legal errors and judges are unwilling to second-guess the verdict of the jury.According to Professor Garret, the current criminal justice system is becoming a "titled played field" (P.176) to wrongfully convicted people. First recipe I made several times is the Blueberry Muffin La Posada Recipe.. is very good.Great Muffins. page336. the format of interesting...like a list of ingredients and in the recipe with directions the ingredient and measurement. LaPosada is a hotel in Winslow, Arizona.It really is wonderful to read the menus comparatively to the comment of no nonsense food of New England...I recall saltines and milk for Sunday night supper....very funny to think of that!

So far I've only tried one recipe from here - the vichyssoise - and it was very easy and very delicious. I'm a huge fan of Vincent Price and after hearing a lot about the original print of this book I wanted a copy of my own. I'm looking forward to making a lot more recipes, and I've enjoyed getting a glimpse into the Price's home and travels. I also enjoyed the extra charts and tables included, such as the conversions/substitutions and calorie charts.

This book is an amazing historical reference book discussing the "gourmet" dining scene in the mid 1960s. The Prices were very rich and famous, and traveled the world collecting art and recipes from the world's most heralded 4 and 5 star restaurants. They were also gourmet cooks themselves, and regularly entertained in their home which was as much an art gallery as it was a house.This book is a record of both their travels and the recipes that they collected. Divided first by country, and then by restaurant, Price provides an introduction to each, often with an anecdote. Additionally, each one of the hundreds of recipes has additional notes and stories. Also included are scans of menus from many of the included restaurants (it's funny/sad looking at the prices on the menus and realizing that if you add a "0" to each one, you have a good idea of the relative cost back in 1960). There are several dozen full-page photos showing, scenes from the restaurants, signature meals, and various rooms in the Prices' museum-house. As for the recipes themselves, they reflect a different era in "fine dining" where everything has a butter/cream/egg sauce and mushrooms are used like a condiment. "Thinly slice four large truffles" just doesn't show up in a lot of modern recipes. In the two weeks that I have had the book I have read it page by page, cover to cover, and have loved every minute of it. Although the vast majority of the recipes I will probably never make, there are a few dozen that I have bookmarked as possibilities.A note about editions. Because this book is so much an icon of it's era, I sought out a second-hand copy of the original 1964 edition. I found a reasonably priced copy in excellent condition through Amazon. Recently a 50th anniversary edition of this classic has been published. I have had the opportunity to look through this edition in a local bookstore, and the contents are essentially identical. The only real difference is in the cover; the original edition has a padded brown and red leatherette cover with "gold" embossing while the new edition has one of the photos from inside of the book reproduced on the cover. Either one would be a delight to read and a great gift for anyone interested in food history.

What a delight this book is, and how good to have it back in print after a half-century. With a new introduction by Wolfgang Puck and an affectionate "Retrospective Preface" by Victoria Price, the authors' daughter, it is better than ever. To call this a "cookbook" is like calling "War and Piece" a novel: true, but wholly inadequate to describe the contents. This "Treasury" does include scores of recipes for dishes from elegant to homely, collected from across the globe—France, Italy, Spain, Scandinavia, England, and more—in simple presentation: ingredients to the left, clear instructions to the right. But this book offers far more than that. It is, at once, a collection of recipes, an art book, virtually a coffee-table tome, a travelogue, a time-capsule, a family heirloom, and a philosophy of life. The book's original design by Mary Price— leatherette-bound, with an embossed cover, and magnificent photographs—has been lovingly recreated. Each chapter, dedicated to a country's cuisine, is introduced by husband Vincent in an engaging, conversational style, with which he also introduces each restaurant and preparation. How many of the restaurants the Prices visited, which shared with them their specialties, still exist I have no idea—but it is a wonderful excursion. (Original menus of the 1960s remain preserved, and it's quite a shock to be reminded what you could order for $10.00 fifty years ago.) Culinary masterpieces abound, but there's nothing pretentious about it: the Prices offer us their favorite breakfast items from the old Super Chief to Santa Fe and best hot dogs from the old Dodgers stadium. Alongside Julia Child, the Prices were on the leading edge of encouraging Americans to celebrate their own cuisine: a rich amalgam of so many different lands. Accordingly, almost half the book is dedicated to dishes served across the United States.What stands out in this book is a joie de vivre, a genuine love for food and life. When asked why she devoted a lifetime of writing about food instead of seemingly more important subjects like power and money, M. F. K. Fisher wisely replied that to write of food is to speak of love. And love is what abounds in this book, crystallized in Victoria Price's gracious introduction to the book, her family, and her own struggles in the kitchen and at mealtimes.The limit of my own culinary expertise is scrambled eggs and grilled steaks, but, had I received this book fifty years ago, I can well imagine that it might have sent me straight to the kitchen, to learn, to practice, and to enjoy. At my advanced age, this book may yet do so.This is a rare find: the Rolls-Royce of cookbooks, which promises its readers a ride just as smooth (with a well-placed reminder, at London's Harrod's, that any meal will only be as good as the quality of ingredients procured in preparation). My masters degree is in Applied Statistics - I've taught intro stats for several years. I'm using this book in a course I'm taking and I'm fairly disappointed (and I'm only the first chapter in).The book has frequent incorrect definitions about fundamental concepts. For example, the book defines a random variables are "...characteristics [which] vary in an unpredictable way ..." The whole idea of statistics is that random variables vary in predictable ways - they follow distributions that have probability densities, etc...Also incorrect, they lump continuous data with interval data when they are two separate ideas. Continuous data has it's 'opposite' with discrete data and interval data is paired with ratio data (the book talks about ordinal and categorical data but completely ignores ratio). Interval data can be continuous or discrete as can ratio data.I haven't gone through most of the rest of the book but if this early on the book is making these kinds of mistakes, I can only assume the remainder of the book is also of a mediocre nature.

Hated the book's contents, but the sellers shipped properly and got me the right book on time. Thank you!

Now, on with my review…POV: First person.BLUSH FACTOR: As a dark fantasy, you pretty well know the story is going to have some rough edges. Just the same, I didn’t expect the opening page to include a violent killing and an eff-word. Thus, you probably can see this is not a story to share with a youngster or your prayer group.WRITING & EDITING: Once I got past the dark side, I could appreciate the professional writing and editing. Or, at least, I could respect both points.POV: First person.Excerpt:‘…The blood was pounding in my head, and the stab wound in my side was blazing with pain again. I felt slightly dizzy. So for an instant, I thought I might be hallucinating when I saw myself standing on the other side of Qaar’endoth, looking straight at me with a slight smile. But no. I was really back.“About [expletive deleted] time,” I grumbled. “I could have really used my help just a minute ago.”“Come on now, Vander,” I answered myself. “Do you really think it’s just a big [expletive deleted] coincidence that this is the moment I returned to my side? What changed? What is the only thing that just changed?”“The statue,” I said. “I restored Qaar’endoth.”“Yes. This shrine is the heart of the temple. This book is a very entertaining read. It's like a combination of the fun and excitement of Conan the Barbarian with the depth and detail of The Lord of the Rings, but it's all its own original story. I enjoyed the way the author made the protagonist uniquely human, and at the same time so much more. Can't wait for the next book in this epic fantasy series.

MC is a gullible fool that has no right to even stay alive.

This book has interesting characters (including lovely women), awesome action, good adult scenes, and a badass protagonist. If you like any of his other books the. You will probably like this book too. If you like herems in this (dark/fantasy) genre then you will love this book.

The book was fairly well written and the story wasn't bad. I just didn't like any of the characters. Couldn't care less about them. I haven't the slightest desire to read the sequel.

Really interesting story and fun characters with well drawn personalities. I enjoyed following along in their adventure a lot, and will for sure buy the next book. I think this is the best book Logan Jacobs has written. Well done!

While fantasy isn't my highest on my priority list, this was a unique MC and a potentially very interesting world that the author has created. I'm looking forward to more.

Logan Jacobs is quickly becoming an author that I check on frequently for new books. His plots are fun and his MCs are likeable. The romances can feel a tad forced at times but nothing that more writing experience can't help improve.
