Jack Schwager is a managing director and principal of The Fortune Group, an alternative asset management firm regulated in the UK and the United States. Schwager is the Senior Portfolio manager for Fortune's Market Wizards Funds of Funds, a broadly diversified series of institutional hedge fund portfolios. He also serves on the board of Fortune's research affiliate Global Fund Analysis, a leading source of independent hedge fund research. His prior experience includes 22 years as the director of futures research for some of Wall Street's leading firms and 10 years as the co-principal of a commodity trading advisory firm.Mr. Schwager is perhaps best known as the author of the best-selling Market Wizards (1989), and the equally popular The New Market Wizards (1992). A third volume in this series, Stock Market Wizards, published by HarperCollins, was released in early 2001. Mr. Schwager's first book, A Complete Guide to the Futures Markets, which was published in 1984, is considered to be one of the classic reference works in the field. More than a decade later he revised and expanded this original work into the three-volume series, Schwager on Futures, consisting of the following titles: Fundamental Analysis (1995), Technical Analysis (1996), and Managed Trading: Myths and Truths (1996). After the hundreds of trading books I have read I still consider Jack Schwagers Market Wizards Series the best of the best. Why? His trading books are not based on theories, opinions, predictions, or beliefs, he goes down a completely different path. His books are based on interviewing the very best traders in the world, the ones with the very best returns year after year, the millionaires, the traders that trade for a living. The New Market Wizards book gives you an up close look at how rich traders were able to find and master a trading style that fit their personality and allowed them to beat the market year after year. If you read this book carefully and pay attention you should find some trading principles that are gems that could revolution your trading. I know his books have done that for me. If other trading books are like letting you see a trader's trading plan then Schwagers books are like allowing the reader to see directly into the mind of the rich trader. I would put this book on my top ten must read trading books.

New Market Wizards is worth a read. Some points thatI gather are as follows:1. Two secrets of trading success:Preservation of capital and Home Runs.2. It is not easy to buy a stock after you have sold it.3. Use left brain for fundamentals and right brain forimagination and story behind how a stock will soar.4. Victor Sperando's goal in Wall Street is not to getrich but to stay in business.5. The key to success is not knowledge alone butemotional discipline. The best analogy to this isdieting. You know that to slim down, you need toexercise and avoid fats. But the knowledge of thisdoes not make you slim. It is the discipline to doit that counts.6. Have a balanced life.7. Do not buy a stock that is going down even if thefundamentals are good. (when broking houses areissuing 'buy' calls)8. Never use valuation to time the market.9. Be able to get over a loss in twenty four hours.Otherwise, the position is too big.10. Emotional makeup and discipline is more importantthan IQ. (i.e. IQ is still important)11. To win, you have to be the minority contrarian.And the most important is this:12. Watch idly when profit is running. When losing,run like a jackrabbit. You do go broke taking a profit.Let profits run!I have a question here. How does one let profits run?How does one know if the price will not reverse andyour profit turns into a loss?

After reading both Market Wizards and The New Market Wizards I see there is more potential in trading for me. One big encouragement I gleaned from both of these books is that there are many methods that were successful for the all time great traders and their recommendation to new traders is to learn your own way of trading that gives you an edge. Then don't listen to all the "talking heads" or friends and family. Just study and learn what you can then find and tweak your edge. Then follow your plan so you can remove emotions.These were the most amazingly informative and encouraging books I have read about trading.

This is a modern day trading classic and the book should inspire all traders. I should say, all traders who really want to improve their results. Schwager brings up that point in so many of his reviews of the top traders, that many are constantly trying to improve. I have wanted to read this book for many years and I should have many, many years ago but now that I have it is certainly one of the books that can be read several times.

The book is probably best if you have a couple of years of trading experience, but it can certainly be read by a novice as well.I would say it is more of a book you read one chapter at a time and for fun, rather than in a focused manner. If you come across something surprising then you read more carefully and maybe investigate a bit more.

I read and enjoy steampunk, but sometimes I'm not in the mood, (and expect a young reader might not be in the mood), for lovingly detailed descriptions and world building. You can get page after page of description of some clockwork contraption, or a whole chapter devoted to a tour of a steam powered engine room. That's not what you get here.Reeve is great at broad stroke world building. He creates the London traction city in a chapter or two. He shows us all of the levels, how it works, how people fit into it, and the larger world within which it operates, and he frames all of the major characters within the first 50 pages. After that we are off to the races on a high energy, twisty and marvelously colorful adventure.And this is a marvelous adventure. Our hero is a bit timid but finds the swashbuckler within. Our heroine is tough, smart, resourceful, and on a mission. This is a fine team. Around and through them we meet a memorable cast of colorful and compelling allies and villains. This is ripping stuff. Lots of running, hiding, lurking, escaping, fighting, and derring do. I was a bit surprised by the level of violence, and not cartoon violence, in the story, but that's treated as a serious consequence of dangerous times and this is still, after all, a dystopian world tale.So, I enjoyed this immensely and appreciated the high level of imagination and creative energy that went into building and then convincingly portraying this fascinating world.

I found out about this book after seeing a preview for the movie and doing a bit of research. The idea of a sci-fi adventure/intrigue with moving cities that need to "eat" other cities sounded like it would be a fascinating read.Sadly, I can't say that I found the story to be nearly as compelling as the idea of it. I can't really put a finger on why I'm not enthralled. The idea is there, the action is there, but I guess the characters fall a bit flat for me. I am finding the book interesting, but not strongly and I've already started to lose interest in any of the sequels.It's just missing the magic piece I guess.

The Story-Tom is a junior historian in the city of London. It is a thousand years since humanity almost destroyed itself in a sixty minute war, and now all cities are built on huge traction machines that roll over the earth and snatch up smaller traction cities.Tom is sent down to the guts to look for artifacts after London eats a mining town. While there he is surprised to see his idol, Valentine, head historian and archaeologist of London. Things turn bad when one of the mining town survivors charges Valentine and tries to kill him. Tom runs after the villain, amazed to see that it is a young woman with a scar down the side of her face and a missing eye.Through different means, they both end up expelled from the city and for the first time Tom finds himself on real ground. Together Tom and Hester try to find their way back to London, Hester to finish her murder and Tom just to get home. However, along the journey Tom learns the truth about his idol Valentine and the ugliness of living in a city eat city world.My Thoughts-This book scores points for originality. The idea of an entire city, as big as London, rolling around on traction wheels and getting their supplies by eating up lesser cities and stripping them bare, blows my mind. I honestly would not have been able to picture it if it hadn't been for the movie trailer. Whether it is in any way realistic is another story, but since this is a fantasy/dystopian novel, I'll let it roll.Let's talk about our main characters, there is actually a quad, Tom and Hester and then Katherine (Valentine's daughter) and Bevis (a junior engineer). Tom and Hester are working their way back to London, discovering flying airships and other mini cities along the way. They also learn of the resistance movement against traction cities. Katherine and Bevis both live in London. Katherine is disillusioned by facts she finds out about her father and Bevis knows the secrets of the engineers and the robots and deadly weapon that are being built. Together they try from within London to stop the insane mayor from destroying the world.The plot is full of twists and turns and as a reader I was eager to find out what the world was like that Hester and Tom lived in. It was also interesting to see technology from our current day have such an impact in the future. There is great tension and build up and the ending scenes are full of action. I enjoyed my ride through this novel. However, I felt as if something were missing. Tom and Hester are great characters, but there is nothing very special about them. I wanted there to be something that only Hester or Tom could accomplish that would save the city or world. Some type of hidden hero archetype or unknown skill that surfaces. I needed to feel that this same adventure could not have happened to any other two kids.So, overall I recommend this book for its originality and action and I'm giving it 4 stars!

Maybe I've come to expect too much from the likes of Orson Scott Card. I'm definitely NOT the Young Adult demographic I suppose this book is aimed at, but even if I were, I think I would have found this book uncaptivating. I love the idea, and really look forward to seeing the movie, but this book's treatment of the story felt insipid, lukewarm, unconvincing.If you want to get an idea what the upcoming movie is all about, maybe it's worth $6.I had a really hard time caring about any of the characters. Too many of them - even the apparent main characters - were just tropes and not really developed beyond those tropes. The author has a habit of making a character appear to be somewhat important, and then killing them off rather flippantly, and in a way that shows they were not really that important. After a while, I started thinking "Cool kid. Shouldn't really start rooting for him, because he's probably dead in 20 pages anyway."And nobody really mourned anyone that was killed off. They were just - gone.Without any spoilers, I was also bothered by the sudden character turnarounds several times - I don't think people change their core nature as readily as they were portrayed in this book. "Hello, my name is Inigo Montoya, you killed my father prepare to die... oh, we're best friends now." Wait - what?I guess my review boils down to this: if you replaced all the character development in this book, I'd love the story.

Some parts of the book can be boring. I mean if you are looking for a guide to write a particular type of essay, for example evaluation one, then probably other parts will be not interesting to you. But it is a little minus as for me.Previously, I wrote two sentences of an essay and then stuck not knowing what to do and did not think that I would someday write a decent paper. Now fears are in the past, and knowledge I got from this book is structured in my head. So, I would recommend this book.

I read this book as a student in the Master's of Science in Fraud and Forensics program at Carlow University [...]. This book is well written and extremely interesting. The stories of the 250 exonerees and their cases are gripping and chilling. I liked Garrett's use of the case studies to better explain how problems such as forced confessions, contaminated evidence, inadequate legal representation and flawed judicial reviews lend themselves to wrongful convictions. The horrifying realization that our trusted judicial system made such egregious errors is unnerving and is a must read for all students of law enforcement. The book is very detailed and is a fitting argument for the case of reforming legal procedures and requiring the use of scientific evidence.The only flaw with this book is that although the case studies are helpful in understanding the material presented and give the reader a true human element to the statistical data and law jargon, they begin to get confusing as they are referenced repeatedly throughout the book. However, it doesn't significantly impact the readability of the book and the case studies are more helpful than hindering. Garrett's attention to detail has made this book void of any serious flaws.This book will be extremely helpful in my future career in fraud. It has taught me that no matter how clear the answer to any investigation appears it remains truly unproven until scientific evidence or a scientific methodology is used. Garrett presents us with the stories of people who did time for crimes they didn't commit (on average 13 years!) because someone felt that they were clearly the guilty party. However, scientific evidence proved 250 times over just how wrong assumptions such as "clear guilt" can be. I believe this can be applied to all situations in life and should be a foundation of belief for all individuals in law enforcement.

In this book, Professor Garrett has studied trial transcripts of 250 wrongfully convicted people to unfold "what has gone wrong" with the current criminal justice system in the US.According to him, there are serious systemic failures in criminal prosecutions that cause wrongful conviction. It is also difficult for convicts to claim their innocence under the lengthy appeals and habeas proceedings:-1. Innocent people can be involuntarily succumbed to undue police pressure and deceptive interrogation techniques (Reid technique, "Mutt and Jeff", "False Evidence" "Good Cop, Bad Cop" techniques) (P.22) to make "coerced-complaint" confessions to crime they did not commit during interrogations (P.18). Besides, police can feed details of crimes to innocent people in which confession statements are constructed as if innocent people volunteered a litany of details about the crimes like true culprits could have known. Although the US Constitution regulates confession statements via two key principles: the "Miranda" warnings (protections to shield suspects from coercion) and the requirement of voluntariness (P.36), judges always believes that confessions that corroborated by detailed facts are apparently reliable and voluntary.2. Even though innocent people are reluctant to make confessions to crime they did not commit during interrogations, they can become convicts due to other corrupted evidence, including eyewitness misidentifications, flawed forensics, and trial by liar. The police can misdirect witnesses to pick out of innocent people during "suggestive" or "prompting" identification procedures (live lineup, mug shots, witness book, composite image (P.52). Eyewitness memory can be fallible and those multiple procedures have reinforced false identifications. Judges rarely suppress eyewitness identifications and the five-factor "Mason test" and other eyewitness reliability tests are deeply flawed (false confidence, discrepancies in descriptions, opportunity to view, degree of attention, the passage of time, cross-racial identifications, child witnesses).The practice of forensic science (serology, microscopic hair comparison, bite mark comparison, shoe print comparison, voice comparison) (P.94, P.95, P.102, P.105) is pervasively flawed and unreliable to solve any crime, according to Professor Garret. The presentation of forensic evidence can be entirely one-sided because forensic analysts testify for the prosecutors (DNA testing, Fingerprint comparison) (P.100, P.107). There are also malpractices in crime laboratories which lead to testing procedures in an invalid way. Moreover, prosecutors usually use jailhouse informants (P.123), (P.139), and codefendants (P.141) in order to plug all of the holes in criminal cases (jack-of-all-trades). Those informants can lie in the face of "stick-and-carrot" techniques used by prosecutors (P.130).3. During trial, Innocent people from lower class always fail to afford talented attorneys and expert witnesses to assert their innocence. (P.149, P.163, P.165). They cannot present a strong defense and make access to substantial investigative resources in contrast to prosecutors. There are cases that prosecutors and polices have concealed evidence that can help the defense case.Between Chapter 7 and 8, Professor Garret has criticized appeals and habeas proceedings to be lengthy and unfair. A wrongfully convicted person served 14 years in prison between his trial and his exoneration (P.180). Some of the innocents have spent a long time (3 years for Frank Lee Smith who finally died of cancer before DNA testing completion) to apply for a DNA testing protest their innocence (P.214). Moreover, the appellate and post-conviction procedures do not effectively look at factual instead of legal errors and judges are unwilling to second-guess the verdict of the jury.According to Professor Garret, the current criminal justice system is becoming a "titled played field" (P.176) to wrongfully convicted people. The psychological and physical impact of a false conviction is huge. Innocents are in jail before exoneration and true culprits can continue to be free to commit to other crimes.Nonetheless, the evolving DNA technology has exonerated the innocents and set them free, Professor Garret has maintained that the current criminal justice system should be practically reformed, ranging from criminal procedures (P.244), interrogation (P.247), eyewitness identification (P.249), forensic science (P.252), Jailhouse informant (P.256), death penalty (P.257), prosecution (P.259), defense (P.260), federal reforms (P.261). First recipe I made several times is the Blueberry Muffin La Posada Recipe.. is very good.Great Muffins. page336. the format of interesting...like a list of ingredients and in the recipe with directions the ingredient and measurement. LaPosada is a hotel in Winslow, Arizona.It really is wonderful to read the menus comparatively to the comment of no nonsense food of New England...I recall saltines and milk for Sunday night supper....very funny to think of that!

So far I've only tried one recipe from here - the vichyssoise - and it was very easy and very delicious. I'm a huge fan of Vincent Price and after hearing a lot about the original print of this book I wanted a copy of my own. I'm looking forward to making a lot more recipes, and I've enjoyed getting a glimpse into the Price's home and travels. I also enjoyed the extra charts and tables included, such as the conversions/substitutions and calorie charts.

This book is an amazing historical reference book discussing the "gourmet" dining scene in the mid 1960s. The Prices were very rich and famous, and traveled the world collecting art and recipes from the world's most heralded 4 and 5 star restaurants. They were also gourmet cooks themselves, and regularly entertained in their home which was as much an art gallery as it was a house.This book is a record of both their travels and the recipes that they collected. Divided first by country, and then by restaurant, Price provides an introduction to each, often with an anecdote. Additionally, each one of the hundreds of recipes has additional notes and stories. Also included are scans of menus from many of the included restaurants (it's funny/sad looking at the prices on the menus and realizing that if you add a "0" to each one, you have a good idea of the relative cost back in 1960). There are several dozen full-page photos showing, scenes from the restaurants, signature meals, and various rooms in the Prices' museum-house. As for the recipes themselves, they reflect a different era in "fine dining" where everything has a butter/cream/egg sauce and mushrooms are used like a condiment. "Thinly slice four large truffles" just doesn't show up in a lot of modern recipes. In the two weeks that I have had the book I have read it page by page, cover to cover, and have loved every minute of it. Although the vast majority of the recipes I will probably never make, there are a few dozen that I have bookmarked as possibilities.A note about editions. Because this book is so much an icon of it's era, I sought out a second-hand copy of the original 1964 edition. I found a reasonably priced copy in excellent condition through Amazon. Recently a 50th anniversary edition of this classic has been published. I have had the opportunity to look through this edition in a local bookstore, and the contents are essentially identical. The only real difference is in the cover; the original edition has a padded brown and red leatherette cover with "gold" embossing while the new edition has one of the photos from inside of the book reproduced on the cover. Either one would be a delight to read and a great gift for anyone interested in food history.

What a delight this book is, and how good to have it back in print after a half-century. With a new introduction by Wolfgang Puck and an affectionate "Retrospective Preface" by Victoria Price, the authors' daughter, it is better than ever. To call this a "cookbook" is like calling "War and Piece" a novel: true, but wholly inadequate to describe the contents. This "Treasury" does include scores of recipes for dishes from elegant to homely, collected from across the globe—France, Italy, Spain, Scandinavia, England, and more—in simple presentation: ingredients to the left, clear instructions to the right. But this book offers far more than that. It is, at once, a collection of recipes, an art book, virtually a coffee-table tome, a travelogue, a time-capsule, a family heirloom, and a philosophy of life. The book's original design by Mary Price— leatherette-bound, with an embossed cover, and magnificent photographs—has been lovingly recreated. Each chapter, dedicated to a country's cuisine, is introduced by husband Vincent in an engaging, conversational style, with which he also introduces each restaurant and preparation. How many of the restaurants the Prices visited, which shared with them their specialties, still exist I have no idea—but it is a wonderful excursion. (Original menus of the 1960s remain preserved, and it's quite a shock to be reminded what you could order for $10.00 fifty years ago.) Culinary masterpieces abound, but there's nothing pretentious about it: the Prices offer us their favorite breakfast items from the old Super Chief to Santa Fe and best hot dogs from the old Dodgers stadium. Alongside Julia Child, the Prices were on the leading edge of encouraging Americans to celebrate their own cuisine: a rich amalgam of so many different lands. Accordingly, almost half the book is dedicated to dishes served across the United States.What stands out in this book is a joie de vivre, a genuine love for food and life. When asked why she devoted a lifetime of writing about food instead of seemingly more important subjects like power and money, M. F. K. Fisher wisely replied that to write of food is to speak of love. And love is what abounds in this book, crystallized in Victoria Price's gracious introduction to the book, her family, and her own struggles in the kitchen and at mealtimes.The limit of my own culinary expertise is scrambled eggs and grilled steaks, but, had I received this book fifty years ago, I can well imagine that it might have sent me straight to the kitchen, to learn, to practice, and to enjoy. At my advanced age, this book may yet do so.This is a rare find: the Rolls-Royce of cookbooks, which promises its readers a ride just as smooth (with a well-placed reminder, at London's Harrod's, that any meal will only be as good as the quality of ingredients procured in preparation). Give it to someone you love, including yourself.

As a professional chef for 12 years now, I have owned and perused my fair share of cookbooks. I have loved them, and idolized them, and I have since become bored by them. Whereas I used to buy 2-3 new books a month, I haven't bought but 1 every year for the last 5 or 6 years. Until I found out that this book existed. This book brings that magic back for me. Great recipes written plainly, and easy to understand. Fantastic photography of the great vincent price and his lovely wife. Wonderful anecdotes from a traveling gourmand.Get it for the history of world food, get it for the great photography of a film icon, get it to learn how to cook anything, just get it already!
