Great way to work Lunar new year into story-time, and since we bought this just before Lunar, it was also introduced just in time for a trip to the New Year parade. Book has been a hit with my kid after the parade too, since now she wants to flip to the "dragon" page over and over.My only criticism of the book itself is that I wish the authors had incorporated the New Year's tradition of other Asian cultures, or at least used the "lunar" new year naming convention instead of "Chinese" new year, since Koreans, Vietnamese, as well as other Asian groups celebrate it as a big holiday also.

Very cute story. Nice illustration. Wish it said Xin Nian Kuai Le or at least Gong Xi Fa Cai instead of Kung Hei Fat Choi. Or at least wish this was noted about the book as I wouldn't have purchased it had I known. My Chinese friends/family don't speak Cantonese so reading this to my kids isn't helping introduce them to an appropriate lunar new year greeting. I'll probably use my label maker to cover and replace this phrase.

The book is darling, but just like the other reviews, my book was missing words in two separate places! That shouldn't have been missed by the publisher. I'll just write in the missing words, but really?

But some words are missing in two pages.

I ordered this book to use in our Fairy Tale unit. I felt my students in Korea would love this version of Goldilocks, as they could connect to the cultural references. I was right! The setting, illustrations, humor, and character development added interest and content for discussion. Thank you for shipping this quality book in a timely manner.

Sister Delio is a part of what some call "Vatican III," the plethora of new thinkers arising within the Catholic Church, beginning with Thomas Merton, Henri Nouwen, and continued by Richard Rohr, Margaret Farley, Daniel Berrigan, and Ilia Delio. To borrow from the ideas of Father Rohr, I would classify this vein of thinking as postliberal, postconservative, postmodern, and non-dualistic. These innovative and forward-thinking religious are bringing the Catholic Church (finally) into its own namesake, which is to say, truly universal.I cannot express enough praise for this work. Though only 200 pages long, it has taken me over a month to finish because it is just so deep and meaningful, and many of her ideas challenge millennia-old habits of the Church Universal. This work is timely and absolutely necessary, and it is because of people like Delio that I keep returning to Mass every weekend. I, for one, welcome Vatican III.My only criticism of this work are the numerous typographical errors within, which is not necessarily any fault of Delio's, and so I opted not to deduct any stars from it. I would give her copy editor(s) maybe two or three stars for their subpar editing work. I view typographical errors as a sign of great disrespect to both the author and the reader, as if the work itself were not valuable enough to expend the necessary energy to make sure the text is error free. Someone at Orbis Books definitely dropped the ball.Still, it didn't detract from the incredible depth of her thinking or the importance of this work for not only the Catholic Church, but the wider Christian community as a whole, and I wholeheartedly endorse anything Delio has written.

I found that there were many things in the book I didn't understand and even some things I would question - knowing that this is a seminal work inviting more reflection and development Having said this I found the vision of this book breathtaking and powerful. I was deeply challenged to see my human - Christian life and mission in a new way. The book succeeded in opening and energizing my mind and heart to a renewed excitement about the relationship between God and religion and science and evolution. It opened up something very profound in me. I say this as a teacher, and a Catholic priest with a doctorate in Theology

Llia Delio's The Unbearable Wholeness of Being" is the major work which beautifully, comprehensively outlines a Christian non-dualistic theology of love. This book contrasts that theological understanding with philosophical Enlinghtenment dualis which really undergirds the reason why the human race is facing extinction through out abuse of the gifts of creation. All this related to culture, politics power and what the reality of creation is in reality--a Whole. Our web of being. The evolution of being. I really studied and contemplated the first book--this book shows us what we are up against. I found "the Unbearable Wholeness of Being" essential to face the consequences Llia delio outlines for dualistic thinking in this book. Highly recommend both.

To answer my own question, the author would probably say that institutionalized religions like the Catholic Church would be severely constrained to lift herself up to spread the Gospel of catholicity, which Delio summarized as the core of the Teilhard's theology. Ironically, the visionary Teilhard de Chardin was a priest true to his belief, so it is perhaps a matter of time, an evolutionary process, before all religions converge into world religions, and all people become people of God. As one who has a scientific background, like Teilhard the paleontologist, Delio did a good job describing Eienstein's General Theory of Relativity from the post-modern faith perspective.

Ms Delio has absorbed the thinking of people like Pierre Teihard de Chardin and, from the perspective of science, leads the reader into the mystery of the world, how the energy of creation moves us to open ourselves to the power of love that unites in contrast to the power of negativity that divides. A thoroughly challenging and spiritually uplifting book.

I am not particularly religious, although I DO believe in the spirit. Either way, it is clear that religion deserves a place at the table when we discuss new and innovative ideas about the cosmos, physics, quantum mechanics, and relativity. Ilia Delio does an excellent job of putting it all together from the religious perspective. Some of what she asks of the Roman Catholic Church - and Christianity in general - is being done by the Bahai faith. Ilia is a strong believer in evolution and in the co-evolution of the material and spiritual in the cosmos.This is a great read for anyone seeking to understand the role of consciousness (spirit) in our cosmos. She is a theologian with a great vocabulary, so keep a dictionary close by.

I was blown away by this book! I want to read it over and over and over! I was moved by the new take on the word catholic. As a catholic, I new the word meant universsal... but I always thought that meant that the Roman Catholic Church was the one true church for everyone... how naive! Now I know it refers to the spirit of catholicity in relation to universal wholeness and the work of making all things wholly! Loved it!

This is a very helpful synthesis of current thought re. Cosmology and Catholicity...catholicity framed as wholistic.. An easier read than her other incredibly wonderful books.

This is a small paperback book with poor quality, old looking paper & small font, which is very difficult to easily read / reference the concise & important information being presented. Neal Barnard MD is very intelligent, and well-versed on the Vegan Lifestyle. Another of his books is “The Get Healthy, Go Vegan “ Cookbook contains much the same info & font is user friendly...a great book! For the past 3 years, I am Wholefoods Plant-based and prior to embracing this enjoyable healthy lifestyle, I was a quasi-Vegan. Being a Nurse, I did a lot of research, reading, attending Lectures, watching Videos, & many YouTube presentations from various Medical Professionals, Chefs & many people who have become Vegan or Wholefoods Plantbased, for many reasons. Mine was primarily for my Health & Wellness, Weight Loss (55#) & to feel better. Which I as many others, have easily achieved. I gave this newly released book 12/2018, only 1 Star for a poor attempt...to help others as, I was unable give a 0.

There are many books out there on plant-based eating (I've read several) and many of them are very good. However, there are few, if any, that are as accessible and concise as this one. Dr. Barnard has done a fantastic job distilling the essential information one needs to know to get started on a vegan diet. Each section wastes no time, or words, on delving into what's most important to know. The book includes all the basics but also has chapters on specific health conditions, life-stage specifics, and some great recipes to get started with. The Vegan Starter Kit is also highly accessible in how it recommends making a transition to a vegan diet, skipping difficult to achieve goals and guidelines and instead advising a simple, very workable path. Highly recommended for anyone just starting out or anyone even remotely curious about vegan eating. Obviously, this book is not meant to be exhaustive and if after reading it you desire to learn more the book includes a great resource section for further study.

Dr. Barnard is one of the primary experts in the Whole Food Plant-Based lifestyle field. I have read most of his and those of the others as well. This book efficiently summarizes the subject and is a practical approach for anyone to implement it. It is a great review for those who have read the literature and a down-to-earth practical approach for those new to the field.

A great, easy read! Im not much of a book reader but it was really easy and split up nicely so i didnt feel like I was struggling to get to the end of a chaper. This really has everything you need to know about a plant based vegan diet! Ive been a junk food vegan for 3 years and am excited to start a healthier lifestyle.

1. Easy to read book about adopting a vegan diet. I've been eating vegan for nearly 3 years and have lost about 30 needed pounds, reversed Type 2 Diabetes shocking my physician, lowering my A1c and blood pressure. I fall off the wagon and get back on. I was looking for a book to send to a friend to encourage her and her family toward healthy living. I think this is the one! Yesterday My Orders indicated the package containing this book had arrived and was handed to a resident. It was no where in my house and my husband didn't get it. After finishing reading this book, reading the notes and bibliography I can't help but want to know why? Why we're Southerners so enraged? Why did they use fists instead of words? Honor only? The author reveals all the fighting that occurred but I was often left wondering what caused individuals to become enraged. Just pointing out the fighting that went on is very revealing in itself but more needed to be said about specific "offences" that spurned congressmen into fighting. Southerners were just a bunch of hotheads and then Northerners took up the mantle later? Why specifically? Perhaps a companion book should be written focusing on one decade at a time in congress before the Civil War.

The Field of Blood is a careful examination of the level of violence manifested in the United States Congress in the tense and violent years of the 1830s, 40's and 50's. Congress in those distant years was a battlefield in which Northerners and Southerners came to the field of battle equipped with canes, guns, rifles, swords and firsts. Dueling was a mark of manhood in the bellicose Southern slave culture. An 1838 duel between Congressmen Cilley of New Hampshire resulted in his death by gunshot fired by his opponent Graves of Kentucky. This was the only person killed in a duel who was a sitting congressman. Freeman recounts the famous caning of Charles Sumner the abolitionist senator from Mass. at the hands of Preston Brooks of S. C. The picture Dr. Freeman of Yale paints is a violent and hate filled time in American history. The book is filled with period illustrations and includes an extensive bibliography and footnotes. We modern Americans sometimes are appalled at the battles in the present congress but we should remember that over a century ago the enmity in the congress was at a much higher level. A well researched book deserving the attention of lovers of history. Recommended.

I was very pleased with this book. Joanne Freeman has brought out a hidden history of the contentions in Congress during the antebellum era, contentions that sometimes, but not always, centered on the very issues that pushed the sections to the Civil War. Freeman uses as her flashlight on this history the life of Benjamin, a functionary in Congress & in the Lincoln Administration (& the Pierce Administration) who was "present" at many of the major DC events from about 1830 all the way to the Andrew Johnson presidency. Since he wrote lots of letters, was a sometime journalist & kept a diary, lots of the information about the battles in Congress can be found in his personal materials. Knowing this history will enrich your understanding of American political history. And it can serve as a tonic to proclamations that this "contemporary" Congress or that is the most violently split of any in our history. The photos, pictures & maps in the book reproduced well on my black & white Kindle.

A flawed book that deserved to be a good journal article. Too much repetition here of basic stories of individual members of Congress fighting each other in the years leading to the Civil War. If the words "bowie knife" and "bullying" were removed, its pages would shrink.My main problem is that no one fairly familiar with mid-19th century America will learn much from the investment in time taken to read Professor Freeman's book on emotional and physical violence by members of Congress. (By the way, her last name is perfect for that of a Civil War historian.)The terrible system and logic of Southern slavery was the basic cause of the Civil War and the national political problems preceding it.My secondary problems are matters of style. While I appreciate footnotes and sources, it seems overkill to have about one third of the total book devoted to this purpose. I also am not a fan of overly fulsome acknowledgments (here three pages worth) by an author: Why do I need to know Professor Freeman enjoyed eating breakfast at Meredith's Bread in Kingston, New York? Finally, I detest the overuse of the words "literal" and "literally." There must be at least ten such usages scattered here, climaxing with two separate cases on the last two pages of the book. "...on a -- literally--dark and stormy night." p 284 and on p. 285, " ...to proclaim his politics to the world almost literally until his dying day."

Reading the prelude to the war through the lens of the Congress was very insightful. The bullying and stifling of free speech in congress is not something taught in school. Congress was a reflection of the nation as a whole. Well written

One of my readers posted a comment on a previous post of mine on Ray Bradbury which made me aware of the book Age of Wonders: Exploring the World of Science Fiction (Tor Books, 1996), by David Hartwell. I was able to pick up the 1984 version published by Walker and Company through Amazon (which I was surprised to find was autographed by the author), and I am pleased to recommend this book as one which provides some significant insights into science fiction. For those unfamiliar with Hartwell, David G. Hartwell is the senior editor at Tor/Forge Books and the publisher of The New York Review of Science Fiction. A recipient of 2006 Hugo Award, and the World Fantasy and Eaton awards, he is the author of Age of Wonders, the editor of The World Treasury of Science Fiction, and the coeditor of two anthologies of the best Canadian science fiction, Northern Stars and Northern Suns.Age of Wonders is written by a science fiction insider to help introduce and explain the genre to outsiders. it is written in a way that is as informative as it is entertaining. For me, two insights of Hartwell were especially noteworthy. The first relates to the cultural significance of science fiction fandom and conventions. While acknowledging a "surface frivolity," Hartwell suggests that there is something far more significant at work. In his view: There is no parallel more apt than the underground movements of the last two hundred years in Western civilization: the Romantics, the Modernists, the Beats. (Note to literary historians: This would make an interesting study.)To outsiders, and to the media in most treatments of science fiction and other genre fans as little more than obsessive geeks or nerds, Hartwell recognizes that there is something of social and cultural significance in the not-so-underground movement that is science fiction fandom. I applaud his insight, and echo his call for historians and scholars in other disciplines to undertake a comparative analysis of science fiction in literature and other forms of expression as a legitimate social movement.The second significant insight comes in Chapter 3, "Worshiping at the Church of Wonder." Breaking with past characterizations that science fiction and religion are incompatible, Hartwell says that, A sense of wonder, awe at the vastness of space and time, is at the root of the excitement of science fiction... To say that science fiction is in essence a religious literature is an overstatement, but one that contains truth. SF is a uniquely modern incarnation of an ancient tradition: the tale of wonder. Tales of miracles, tales of great powers and consequences beyond the experience of people in your neighborhood, tales of the gods who inhabit other worlds and sometimes descend to visit ours, tales of humans traveling to the abode of the gods, tales of the uncanny: all exist now as science fiction. Science fiction's appeal lies in its combination of the rational, the believable, with the miraculous. It is an appeal to the sense of wonder.Here again I think Hartwell is on to something, particularly in the decades since he first wrote these thoughts as science fiction has continued to find increasing connections to wonder, myth, and even religion. For those who doubt this, in science fiction cinema consider two examples from Steven Spielberg. His Close Encounters of Third Kind presents the possibility of alien life and visitation of the Earth framed in religious ways, from the choir-like music at key points of the film, to the descent of the alien mothership that is reminiscent of the towering spires of ancient church cathedrals. As another example, in Minority Report the film raises questions of foreknowledge, free will, and priesthood, normally the stuff of religion in the past, but now nestled comfortably in science fiction discourse.Given Hartwell's insights into science fiction it would be interesting to see him update this volume to account for developments since the time of publication (perhaps the 1996 edition touches on some of this) to include the increasing popularity of fan conventions that some have seen paralleling religious pilgrimage, the incorporation of religious elements within science fiction by writers with religious and esoteric commitments, and the rise of hyper-real and fiction-based religions that draw upon science fiction and related genres, at times as sacred text.For those interested in probing science fiction in more depth I recommend Hartwell's Age of Wonders: Exploring the World of Science Fiction as an important part of any research bibliography.

This is apparently a mid 90s update to a mid 80s book.Divided into three major sections :-The Source and Power of SF's AppealExploring the Worlds of Science FictionandWriters, Fans and CriticsHe also has some short appendices about important early works, including pre-20th century, a bit about the development of commercial fantasy, on editing, and his list of best books.It is quite interesting. He looks at why people like SF, pointing out that such people do seem to think a bit differently, and the problems 'outsiders' have in coming in cold to SF work, and the fact that if you read a lot - he calls these people 'omnivores or chronics' that you will have your assumptions and beliefs challenged and lots of people absolutely do not want that. Also the fact that academic or literary critics that are 'outsiders' will have read far less material than such people.He looks at the influence of 'fans' in the 'keen convention or discusser of' sense, and also the 'New Wave War', after SF moved out of the golden age, as well as some leading critics.As far as style of writing goes, he mentions that a disagreement between H. G. Wells and Henry James could be seen to be at the heart of it, early on. Or, ornate style and character over a 'clear, journalistic style of prose' and having a plot and story. Of course pointing out that some SF writers do have both.Anyway, well worth a look, and it would be interesting to know if his opinions are the same around ten years later, given the digital influence now.

It was bound to happen. As I sat down to type up this commentary, I paged through my Day-Timer to find the notes I had written on the books I had read. I came across the reference to this...and a blank page. So what do I remember, now over two months later? I picked up this book long ago in paperback, read the first chapter or so, and sent the book to my mother. My parents have been quite understanding of my interest in science fiction, but I don't believe they've ever quite understood it. The first chapter, and indeed the rest of the book, is a wonderful introduction to science fiction and the culture it engenders. I don't know if my mother has ever read this, but I'm glad that it was there to send to her. I picked up this book again three years ago from an ad in Locus. It sat on my bookshelf until this past semester, when I did a study of science fiction fandom for my sociology class. Hartwell's excellent study then came in quite handy as a reference tool and quotebook for the paper that I wrote. Useful? Quite. I recommend it as probably the best study so far on science fiction fandom, mainly because it is the only one. Other books make reference to the subculture; only Hartwell dedicates an entire book to it. If you've ever wondered why fans are as they are, this might be your answer.
