I have read every one of John Ellsworth's books and particularly love the Thaddeus Murfee series. The characters have become old friends.Unspeakable Prayers departs from the usual storylines and it took me longer than usual to engage with the characters while I waited for Thaddeus to appear. My faith in Ellsworth kept me going and he did not disappoint. This may be the most powerful book in the series. It left me in tears, with a lot to think about.

I picked this book two years ago and forgot about it. Wish I would have read it sooner. I found the book to be very realistic and very thought provoking. Having survivors from the Holocaust and meeting them in their home country brought back memories that were conveyed to me by their stories. We visited several concentration camps that left me asking why this could have happens. The author wrote from the heart and I could close my eyes and actually transport myself in the story. I found his book to be very well written, but it could have been made longer to fill in the gaps of jumping time.

Several times I had to put this book down, not because I wanted to but because I was overwhelmed (and sometimes because the family needed something). Something about the Thad Murphee books keeps me coming back for more and I am always delighted to see a new book about to appear. This one was a little different in that Thad, while important to the story, was not the primary protagonist for a good portion of the book. As I was reading this on Holocaust Remembrance Day, it tugged on my heart and I had to spend time pondering the juxtaposition of that day, the book's arrival, and current events. The graphic scenes in the extermination camp of Treblinka are absolutely devastating, but the only things that seem to set it apart from current affairs are the vast scope and the sheer numbers of people who fit within the labels that the monsters were/are using to destroy others. When the Holocaust occurred, a great deal of the atrocities were not exposed to the general public until after the war was over. We believe we are seeing the actual reports today, but how do we know? I remember watching the Nuremberg Trials in grade school - and that many parents were appalled that we were allowed to watch the film. I think we became better people for it. We know that Antisemitism seems to be on the rise again and that there are people in the world who are convinced that their beliefs are so much better than those of others that they are willing to not only kill, but erase from the earth those who disagree. We have seen this before and the world said "Never Again!" I guess those who forget or deny history really might be doomed to repeat it.I cannot tell you how much this book tore at my heart, but often uplifted my spirit, and convinced me that, even though fiction, the ring of truth will always impact those who listen and care. The truth was in the camp and Lodzi's travels as well as in Thad's home. As Thad, Katie and Turquoise discover: sometimes we have to let those we love realize they have a problem before we can help resolve it. Often, if we're strong enough, we know they must provide the bulk of the resolution. The way the different individuals in this book face their problems is a fascinating study in character development. It was a pure delight witnessing the interactions among Thad's family members - a little more time with them would have been fun, but I don't think John Ellsworth writes fast enough to keep up with demand as it is.When I meet other readers and we discuss books and authors, I am always overjoyed to meet those who already read the Thaddeus Murphee series. But it's even more fun when I get to introduce Thad, family and friends to someone new. Seeing characters return is somewhat like meeting old friends, they're just the same in heart and spirit even though we may have been apart for awhile. These books spark a similar feeling - and I can always pick them up and reread them!If you haven't already committed to purchasing/reading this book: Please read this. It may disturb you at the beginning, but know that the opportunity to let those feelings be brought to the forefront of your awareness may impact the way you value your own life and the lives of those around you. It made me want to be more protective and more aware. I want to be kinder to those around me. I want to remember that my prayers are speakable and continue to pray for those whose might not be. This may not be pure reading fluff (ok, some of what I read is the equivalent of mental cotton candy), but that's a good thing. I think many of us need to experience a little more depth at times - it keeps us on our toes.

I am on John's list to notify me of his new books, I have read the previous 6 Thaddeus books with much pleasure, only one of them I was a little disappointed in, his latest Unspeakable Prayers is the best in my mind he has ever written. My only very mild criticism is the book could have been longer which would have allowed expansion of some of the things that seem to 'Just happen'.Book one sets the stage, and while it was principally about the Holocaust it introduced Lodzi Ashstein as one of the survivors and Janich Heiss as his main tormentor at the death camp Treblinka, my previous factual reading of the Holocaust tells me John has given an accurate picture of what happened in this camp.Book 2 takes you to America and show the path that Lodzi took to start living in a new world, it shows some of the difficulties that emigrants had and it starts to join the parts of the story together.Book 3 Shows where Thaddeus meets Lodzi for the first time and introduces the drug problems of his adopted daughter Turquoise and how the hunt started for Heiss. Lodzi tells his story in parts with the daughter problem interspersed in between, you learn about Heiss american family and how they were involved, it also gave the obvious clues which showed how a hopeless case of murder was going to end up happy for the good guys.Book 4 was the main court case and showed how the required evidence was found, it also raised Thaddeus AA back ground in relation to his daughter, but this aspect was not heavy handed, the story on it own about Lodzi and Heiss would have been fine on its own.I could have said a lot more but it endangers one of ruining the book for others, and this is a book well worth reading, I rarely give 5 stars I save them for the better book still to be written but in this case John Ellsworth has reached the peak of his writing career, I eagerly await for his next book.
