In contrast, the monogamous Hindu tribes are much poorer because of their larger families. Female infanticide is common. In a poetic text built around the cycle of the seasons, Dunham, director of a cultural-exchange program called Sojourn Nepal, describes various peoples for whom life is hard and short, each moment precious. This book truly captures what Nepal as it was 15 years ago, and the magic of the Dolpo region. Beautifully photographed, and fantastically well written. Recommended as a gift to people who love Nepal or to people who are planning a trip to this unique region within the country. I wish there was a travel size version of the book.
Love this book. Gives a real feel of the Himalayas. Between the pictures and the descriptions, it is a beautifully presented piece of art.
I was hoping for a lot of good photos of the mountains, but this is almost all, "Gee aren't these people quaint and poor and ultra-backwards, and look there's old uncle Ug bringing in the yaks." The photographer looks to have stood in one place for a year and shot whatever walked by. And many of the photos are worse than second rate. Anybody want my copy because I'm throwing it out. If you want an extended Nat Geo article, well here it is.
I was in Kathmandu in Novemver of 1998, staying at the Hotle Vajra and had the opportunity to meet Thomas Kelly. He gave a signed copy of this book to the host of our trip and I got to flip through it. What a fabulous book! I wasn't aware that The Hidden Himalayas and Kathmandu City on the Edge of the World were out of print until I returned to the states. I've tried to located it everywhere and I'm not having any luck. Can you help me get a copy of these books?
