Most of the negative reviews fall into two categories:1: They hate Arthur Jones.2: The say there is nothing "new" in this book.I haven't read any of Ell's former books, so I didn't find any repetition. I am going to try his workout program (I'm already a HIT believer). My only real complaint is that he seems to take some shots at Mike Mentzer. Mentzer may not have been perfect, but he was probably the most recognizable champion of HIT philosophy. There aren't a ton of HIT people out there..so Ell should close ranks and respect Mentzer instead of taking shots at him in his book. ESPECIALLY since Mike is dead and can't defend himself or reply to anything Ell is saying.ALL THAT BEING SAID, most people buy books like this to work out and get results. I think everything in here seems legit and thoughtful. I'm going to give it a shot.UPDATE: After using this for the last couple weeks, I have to change my rating and note some flaws. Ell recommends 12 exercises, 3 days a week. The same 12 every time. You kind of ease into it and then back out to 8 exercises twice a week towards then end of a cycle. The problem is, I feel EXTREMELY overtrained doing HIT with a full body, 12 exercise routine, 3 days a week. There is simply not enough rest. All my reps have gone down and I feel exhausted. I think Mentzer was WAY more on target and I'm going back to his routines. Nice try by Ell, but I can't imagine anyone being able to TRULY go to failure and use the intensity of hit with his routine.
For me this book is worth the price of admission for the overtraining/recovery section alone. I always do too much and since I started taking my recovery into more consideration I am adding more size and am able to go harder in the gym. It gives some sound reasoning why "chasing the pump" isnt necessarily the best route as well. The more books I read on training as opposed to muscle mags the more I realize that muscle mags are all ghost written and their only goal is to sell products not help the individual. Its funny, the more Ive come to realize that truth the more Ive grown, the mags throw up the same workout over and over year after year, books like this, are actually intended to help you achieve your goals. Good luck and keep pushing weight.
I have been into physical fitness, building strength and the martial arts all my life. I am always seeking new workout programs even though I am in my senior years. I recently purchased this 256 page soft cover (The New High Intensity Training by Ellington Darden, Ph.D.) book, which focuses on serious body building exercise programs incorporating the principles of Arthur Jones (Inventor of the Nautilus exercise machines) who developed his high intensity approach to building the body. This very informative book is organized into six parts. Part one gives a short biography of Arthur Jones and his development of the HIT (High Intensity Training) workout principles. Part two covers the time Arnold Schwarzenegger and other serious body builders visited and trained under Arthur Jones guidance on his Nautilus machines. Part three focuses on HIT principles, exercises and routines. Part four explains specialized HIT routines. Part five deals with a 6-month HIT course for explosive growth and the final part answers questions about the HIT workout principles. One of the many reasons I love this book is because it includes specific details of each exercise with clear black and white photographs. It also has numerous photographs of some of the most famous body builders of the past such as Arnold Schwarzenegger, Boyer Coe, Casey Viator, Sergio Oliva and many others. This book also does not “pull punches†in its realistic advice concerning body building etc.Even though this book was published in 2004 the principles and exercises it shows are still valid today. If you are a serious body builder or anyone who is into training with weights this book is for you.Rating: 4 Stars. Joseph J. Truncale (Author: Shotokan Karate Self-Defense Techniques: Combat karate for the street).
Ellington Darden provides a comprehensive and balanced discussion of high intensity training (HIT). Some form of HIT is really beneficial for strength and size gains. A lot of training modalities don't work as well when you reach 67 years old (like me) but modified HIT does work, even for an old f_ _k like me with structural issues.
I would divide this book into two parts - the factual training part and the stories part. The stories part is a nice touch - makes for a more interesting read. The training part is also good. I've been looking for ways to cut down my exercise time. While this book didn't help me achieve that, it did help me get more focused in my training - getting more done is the same amount of time by increasing the intensity. While some have commented that this book is a good intro to HIT training, I don't think it is really suitable for absolute beginners at lifting. I'd recommend some basic conventional training first before trying this.Once somebody has done both then he can really feel the difference and reap maximum benefits.
It is a great book for those who want to trim the fat around their waste by toning their muscles and burning extra fat. It also lend itself for those who get into body building.I personally like some of the workout that y0u can do home with minimum equipments. On balance it help all type of people and their fitness needs.
I use these principles in all my workouts. The only thing I am adding is High Intensity Interval Training to supplement the endurance portion of my workout.
Its an interesting read, however it really wasn't worth the amount of money I got it for ($18) it should of been more like $10. This is primarily since they information that they provide is stuff that anyone could find online via Google.
