I can read the book on an Android device but not using the Kindle Cloud Reader on Mac/Linux...Bummer. I have a ton of other amazon ebooks that all work with the cloud reader--this is the first book that doesn't work. ;-(So far the book is good I am learning Verilog with it plus the 8bit website is pretty nifty. ;-)
If you want learn Verilog but are looking for something beyond the standard blink/button/7-segment FPGA projects, do yourself a favor and buy this book. Working through the implementations of early video games is both entertaining and educational. The book is well-written (barring a few typos) but the online Verilog editor and CRT emulator really bring the examples to life. It also lets you focus on the code and slow down the frame rate to see what’s going on instantly without having to worry about toolchain implementation details. Highly recommended.
Having had some experience with VHDL on physical FPGAs this looked like a fun way to get a little more familiar with Verilog. The info is shared without too much ceremony and should be quite easy to digest for someone that is new to the topic, the one thing to be aware of is that going from the simulated environment to physical hardware is a pretty big step and not really covered in any depth in this book, so while you will definitely get a feel for what it takes to do a digital design in HDL and get to play with the results there is a big step to get the next level, understanding constraint files, timing constraints, propagation delays etc. etc. But, this does not take a way from the book in anyway, it is a great intro to the topic and you even get to see what it would take to design a basic 8 and 16 bit CPU. I have many books on FPGA development and none are as presented with as much fun, I would say this book make the topic much less intimidating that others make it seem. I will definitely be getting the other books by this author.
This is from the guy who wrote the definitive book on Atari 2600 programming. While he doesn't go into enough detail on how to get a real FPGA board to output video, it is a great text that will help even the beginner to build their own gaming hardware. I didn't know any verilog before I started!
This book is very fun to read. It assumes you have some knowledge about digital logic, but the best part is that can be used with the simulator/emulator in author's Web site. Totally recommended if you like digital design, vidro games, programming and hardware. Thanks!
