If I could give this a 4.5 I would. I have never read a LitRPG before so I wasn't sure what to expect. I was so lucky to have this book as my first introduction. It was good, really good. I liked the main characters (so important) and the story was inventive and interesting.James Hunter definitely knows how to write. I am always worried when I start reading a 'new to me' author. Sometimes the reviews are so glowing for some books and yet I find that the writing style just doesn't suit me. Not so with this author. He has an easy flow that was detailed and yet not bogged down. I liked his writing style and the way the action flowed. This story moves fast. Sometimes I wanted him to slow down a bit - maybe it would have helped with making the characters more 3 dimensional - I don't know, I'm not a writer. I guess I just wanted more info on all the inner workings. The author has a good sense of humor (though he doesn't go overboard with it) and a nice way of describing the action.I'm not gonna say anything about the plot etc., the synopsis pretty much covers it. But I will say that if you play fantasy RPG then this book will surely be a good read for you. I play (not a hardcore gamer but I do play) and I could really see this VGO game as a real game. Actually, it put me in the mood to play Skyrim again! So if your on the fence about this book, I would say get it. It's very well written by a talented author. It's not a long book and it went by so fast!! I just bought the 2nd in the series and I have a feeling that I'm gonna be mad that the entire series isn't out yet! Note to James: You can't type fast enough for me... so get to typing out the rest of this series! ;)

So Jack is our average Joe, 30-something EMT out in California just wanting to survive the apocalypse. What I liked most about our character is that it was really easy to connect with him as a person. He has fears, loads of them, and uncertainty about what the future holds. This doesn't hold him back, but like any one he just can't help shake off some of these doubts. Its these inner-musings that let us know he isn't some 2D character in a game (book?) but someone you can easily connect to and understand. I've said this in one or two other series in the litrpg genre, but its nice to have a real person rather than a trumped up hero!I'll try to keep it spoiler free, but lets just say he isn't on the OP side and not quite hugging the cheatz...but man is he close. You'll need to read a bit before you understand that, but just understand it was either him or some other smuck. I liked how the author handled the "game-breakers" and managed to create an entire plot out of it. Really interesting to see where this goes and how it all ties with those beings in the background....Anyways, enough innuendo and subterfuge...if you have managed to read this far and seen other reviews...you should just pick it up and enjoy it for the post-apocalyptic litrpg that it is.

A large rock is on its way to collision with earth, and the end is near for most humans. One possible route of escape (and there are more) is being permanently uploaded to a game on a bunch of servers placed deep underground. The technology is not perfect, the risks high and if successful you are stuck in a game for the rest of your existence (which can be very long). The protagonist decides to take the leap ending in fantasy game world in a personal starting scenario. While setting his first steps in the world, learning the mechanics and seeing a bit of the setting, he quickly learns more is going on than meets the eye. Through his friendship with one of the developers and quick thinking he ends up in an important position to deal with the problem by the end of the book. The setting seems to be thought through, including the fact that the game has been designed as game and only later in development did people realize it would serve as an escape route. The consequences of such are believable as are the sollutions. A conflict ridden world in the middle of a big war is not something people would flee to, but it is important to a game. Limitations that keep a game fun and hacker proof also prevent those same developers later on to easily abuse the system for the wealthy and powerful. From what I saw of the game mechanics I liked. Talent trees based on skills and class form the basis which allows players to plan ahead which is an important aspect for RPGs. Finally, I prefer it when the main character is the hero type who uses his mind more than his brawns. My biggest gripe is that it was short. I would also have prefered a little bit more interaction with other players and the game mechanics as a whole. What happens if you die? How does PvP work? The realism of the violence and gore is also a bit odd. Nobody would design a game in that fashion. No company would players develop PTSD. The protagonist is also wondering about it, so we might get an explanation later on. Finally, I agree with other reviewers that how NPCs accept game mechanics even when avoidable (such as with accessing inventory) is also odd. Not because it jars me as a reader, but because games are designed to keep the players immersed and that is done by keeping the game mechanics as much as possible out of game play. All in all, a good addition to the litRPG genre and looking forward to the next part.

Easy to read book with the concept of human digitisation due to an imminent asteroid challenge collision. Our MC chooses to become a Dokkalfar, or dark elf.He completes three very hard quests, scores himself some artifacts, and then we are left with a twist at the end.
